I graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University with a BS in engineering physics, and a math minor. I have been tutoring for more than 6 years. For 2.5 years, I taught math to Cornell Engineering undergraduates, and I looked forward to it every week! On Varsity Tutors, I tutor up to college level mathematics and physics, test prep (including AP courses, and SAT reading/writing). I am a recent Hunter College undergrad (majored in Neuroscience) working as a Biology and Chemistry teacher at Lower Manhattan Art Academy (a Title 1 school) during the day and tutoring in the evening. I have been tutoring since high school in all subjects, and more recently, college students in Statistics and high school juniors in SAT prep. I also spent this last winter abroad in Ecuador teaching high school students the English language. I have an extra close connection with middle and high school students as I have two brothers in those grades and through my other previous/current experiences. I volunteer with the Red Cross where I am a part of the PillowCase seminars where I go into middle school classes and stress the importance of fire safety. I also volunteer with Peer Health Exchange, an organization that delivers 9th graders health seminars to those that may not receive health class in high school. Lastly, I volunteered at Rockefeller University Science OutReach Lab where I instruct middle/high school students basic science laboratory techniques and share some of my college experience. After graduating from Skidmore with honors, I began to work on my MA at The New School for Social Research, where I am focusing on Ancient, Modern, and Contemporary political, legal, and moral philosophy. While at graduate school I have begun to tutor a number of students, many of whom I have now been working with for over a year. My greatest assets as a tutor lie in my mastery of the english language, skills in logic and conceptual organization, and versatile ability to explain to students complex ideas with which they find themselves frustrated and struggling. As a tutor it is really important to not think that just because one method works for one kid that it will automatically work with another. It is my job to make whatever the student is struggling with personal or stated in a way that makes it click. I went to the University of Central Florida and majored in Sociology focusing on youth. I started out volunteering with an organization called Youth for Christ and discovered that working with youth is what brings me the most joy. When an opportunity to volunteer teaching students who had been in trouble with the law came up I jumped on it. These kids required me to not only help the students understand a specific concept but to help them to see the value in understanding the concepts at all. I fell in love with tutoring through that organization because when students struggle with school they will often unknowingly feel a sense of shame that goes pretty deep, when they are able to finally understand what they are struggling with it helps to build their grades as well as their confidence. I love getting to be the person who helps them feel that sense of accomplishment.
