I am a graduate of the University of Kansas, with bachelor's degrees in biology and environmental studies. While I am fascinated by the natural world, I also have interests in other fields, such as literature, philosophy, and foreign languages. One of the reasons I like tutoring is because it allows me to use what I have learned in such fields to help others gain confidence in and become excited about a subject. I especially love to tutor in French, which I studied at the Universit du Havre and minored in during college.I believe that curiosity is the most important ingredient in learning. As a tutor, I ask questions to help students come to right answers on their own, and I show students how to ask their own questions as well. I believe in giving my students resources that help them continue learning after tutoring is finished and throughout their lives. In addition, using my knowledge of science, math, the arts, and the humanities, I make connections between different subjects to help my students see how what we're working on isn't so strange after all! Before beginning to work with Varsity Tutors in August of 2014, I worked in a K-8 school as an intervention math teacher. There, I tutored elementary- and middle-school students in math in small groups. Working in that setting taught me more about how to explain abstract concepts simply and creatively, and about how to use quizzes and evaluations to track student progress. During college, I helped my peers learn French both individually and in small groups; and most recently, I worked as an English language teacher in France, helping small groups of middle- and high-schoolers put their language learning into practice by organizing projects, conversations, and debates. In my free time, I like to read, write, draw, and learn about topics of interest such as Spanish and world literature.

I am a professional educator with a passion for working with students. I believe that each student can learn, it just takes patience and hard work. For me working with a student is really a partnership between the parents, student and tutor. We all need to work together in an open and honest relationship. Communication is key. In order for me to know how to best work with students, I need to better understand their study habits and the environment in which the studying takes place. With this information, I am better able to make concrete suggestions on how the student may improve. Working with a tutor is just that - working with the student; the tutor is not a crutch. My job is to explain and clarify in a more effective manner the issues which are troubling the student. I am dedicated to assist in the learning process and to challenge the student to grow into a more confident learner and thinker.World Languages are my passion. I have been very fortunate to have lived, worked and studied abroad in Paris, Geneva and Mexico City. My work experience in schools is varied from classroom teacher to Assistant Head of School/Principal. I have also worked in admissions marketing, college counseling. I understand and appreciate the value of an excellent education. While tutoring, I dedicate myself to the student and their success.I look forward to working with you as partners as we help your student become an independent and hardworking student and a critical thinker qualities that are and will be needed for all students today and in the future.

To be a great tutor, like any skill that I've tried to teach a student in these past four years, gets better with practice. I'm thankful to have attended a high school that allowed me the opportunity to offer academic support to my peers. There were no material incentives - the rewards were intrinsic. Thus, I learned to love teaching for its own sake. When I came to college, the opportunities only expanded. I was able to support myself through the first year of college on this skill alone. It continued to be something I enjoyed, and it ultimately led to me directing a tutoring program - the Let's Get Ready program, at my former high school. Now, I am excited to return to a hands-on teaching role, bringing to it all the insight I have gained over the years, from varying perspectives.

I am a graduate student at Columbia University currently majoring in South Asian Studies with a focus on history and postcolonial theory. I attended New College of Florida where I received my bachelor's degree in History. I am an aspiring professor and an avid student of all disciplines. My tutoring experience ranges from elementary school to graduate-level work, and I have specialized for the last two years in working with students with learning disabilities. My preferred subjects are history, literature, reading comprehension, and writing, and I can tutor verbal sections for standardized tests including the GRE. My favorite subject, you may have guessed, is history, but I also have a long personal history learning foreign languages, and I feel that this contributes to my skill in teaching English reading comprehension. When I'm not teaching students or sitting in a library, I'm walking my Australian shepherd dog around Fort Tryon Park or shopping for used books.

I am currently studying towards my graduate degree at Columbia University. I've received my BA in philosophy from Durham University in England. Throughout my studies I have developed extensive logical and reasoning skills that I believe were key to my academic success, and skills which I believe anyone can acquire with proper instruction. This combined with my familiarity with the GRE means I can help you achieve the result you wish. My way of teaching focuses on understanding instead of rote memorization and that each pupil is best suited for a tailored teaching plan that takes into account your current abilities, time commitments, strengths/weaknesses, and desired result. My hobbies and interests include reading (literature), creative writing, calligraphy, and video games. I grew up in bilingual household, so I can also speak Mandarin in a near-native level and studied and travelled extensively in Europe and Asia. I hope to be a writer someday, and I would describe myself as laid-back, easy going and multicultural.

Literature is my passion and has always been the focus of my studies, both in English and in Spanish. I attended Rice University in Houston, TX. Taking advantage of being fully bilingual (I was born and raised in Mexico City, but have been living in the U.S. for almost ten years now), I double-majored in English and in Hispanic Studies so that I could read and study Literature in both languages and from many different periods and countries. I also recently earned my M.A. degree focused on Modernist Literature from the University of Chicago.I am currently a high school English teacher, and would be happy to help you improve your reading, writing, and/or public speaking skills. As a native Spanish-speaker, who has continued studying the language and its formal use, I can help you with the formal and informal use of the Spanish language and differentiating between the two, at any level. Two of my goals as a tutor are:1) Finding the best ways and environments in which each student learns. I believe everyone works differently and at a different pace. The key is to make learning entertaining, valuable, and useful for every student. I am definitely not a fan of “busy work,” but I am a fan of helpful and relevant practice (when necessary).2) Always providing encouragement when it is well deserved and always reaffirming the student about their strengths with the purpose of building the student’s confidence, which I believe has a major impact on their learning.

AP English Language and Composition Tutor • +20 Subjects

I am currently a Language Arts teacher at Norcross High School where I have been teaching an SAT prep class four times a year for the past three years. Additionally, I tutor students who require language arts assistance. This year, I am teaching Senior Honors British Literature and Junior Honors American Literature. The previous two years, I taught senior AP Language and Composition which is my favorite class to teach. I also received certification in AP Literature. I'm dedicated to quality instruction, educational innovation, building relationships with students and their parents, and making learning fun. Students enjoy my class (my student approval rating is 94%, and I always rate well on Ratemyteachers.com) because I love to laugh and be ridiculous. Plus, I'm skilled at making quick connections to movies, music, jokes, etc. that kids can relate to and enjoy. Most importantly is my ability to zero in on what issues prevent kids from understanding and have effective techniques for developing clarity and understanding in students.

I recently graduated Reed College with a BA in Philosophy. I worked as a peer tutor at Reed, but my tutoring experience goes back to my high school years, to when I volunteered to tutor elementary school and middle school students struggling with their schoolwork, and realized how significant a tutor can be in a student's life. Ever since that time I have been passionate about tutoring. I have worked with students of all ages and skill levels, in my volunteer work, as a private tutor, and as a peer tutor.Tutoring is a one-on-one experience, and I've found that the key to good tutoring is to realize that every individual student is different. My tutoring philosophy is that tutoring should by no means follow a one-size-fits-all approach. In my tutoring practice I focus on treating students as unique individuals, determining what is effective for each student, and getting to know each student's particular academic needs and goals. When it comes to SAT prep, I believe that understanding the material is always more important than simply understanding the test. I teach specific testing strategies and tricks, but I ensure that at the heart of my tutoring is the academic material itself. A student who simply masters the strategies and tricks might do great on the SAT, but the student who understands the material will do great on the SAT and continue to do great in college.I have particular experience and expertise in tutoring math (of all levels) and SAT prep, but I also tutor for other standardized tests, and for English, philosophy, writing, and history classes. When I'm not tutoring, I'm probably reading, listening to music, cooking desserts or shopping at a thrift store.

Seventeen years in education teaching and counseling students from different countries in the Caribbean, Asia and the Middle East. And ready to incorporate this interesting North American experience to my resume.I obtained a diploma for teaching Spanish and French as a Second Language from the Education Canada College of Montreal, Canada. I also hold the highest diploma in French language and culture awarded by the French Ministry of Education. I also have my home country teachers certification from the University of Havana, Cuba.My years of experience teaching foreign languages internationally has allowed me to see a shift in teaching methodologies from a grammar-centered approach to a communication-centered approach. The qualities I try to instill in my students are to strive for personal excellence and overcome obstacles. I see myself as guide on my students route towards further knowledge. My teaching strategy is to rapidly identify the needs, weaknesses and strengths of my students so I can better adapt my teaching methodology to best suit their needs. Once I have identified the different learning styles I can develop a variety of activities and methodologies that address these needs. I encourage my students to freely ask questions, express doubts and to never hesitate to express ideas during the lessons.I consider that in a foreign language class it is necessary to develop the four basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. All the while, I emphasize the speaking aspect because it is the most rewarding to the student. I focus on interaction within the classroom maximizing the amount of foreign language used by my students. Finally, I consider teaching my biggest passion and I put all my effort on it. It is a great satisfaction to help others conquer their educational dreams.
