Six months ago I was reciting off the lyrics to the song "Thrift Shop" in front of a class of seven adult Muscovites struggling to learn English. The book we were using was dry and the vocabulary boring. All of the students were young and liked American music. So I decided to bring in a song they all liked. We spent the rest of the class discussing that one song. The next class I was presented with a host of requests that ranged from 50 Cent to Miley Cyrus.I chose this approach because I feel that learning is best internalized when a student feels like he or she can own their learning process. This means that the teacher works to facilitate guided discovery and so is in constant dialogue with the student. Those students needed to learn English in a way that was relevant to them. This approach has been informed through a year and a half teaching in Russia as well as my education. I completed my B.A. in History and International Relations from Bowdoin College. Before that I went to St. Johns School here in Houston.My interest in history and international relations definitely informs what I do outside of teaching. I love trying and cooking new foods, some with more success than others! I also play soccer and cycle quite a bit.

I am a graduate of Augustana College, where I received a Bachelor's degree, as well as Northwestern University, where I received a Master's of Science. After graduation, I worked as a research assistant at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. I have had experience in tutoring college-aged and adult students in the fields of research methods, Philosophy of Mind, and writing. I have also given informal instruction to friends with regards to math, coding, and preparation for standardized tests. I am especially interested in tutoring for Python coding, math, and test prep. As a self-taught coder, I am especially excited to see other people succeed in the field of Python. As somebody who had to learn to love math, I am excited to see students understand the workings of mathematics. Finally, as somebody who has been taking standardized tests since grade school, I enjoy helping others understand the workings of standardized tests and the skills (both academic and personal) needed to succeed at them. I'm originally from Houston, and I've moved back home to begin my engineering career after graduating from the University of Arizona. While I was in school, I spent time tutoring fellow students in math and logic classes. Doing this I found that I really enjoy helping people learn and overcome obstacles.After I learn a bit about my students I try to adapt my teaching style to fit their learning style, auditory/visual/etc. I strive to generate those 'lightbulb' moments, when suddenly it all clicks "everything seems so simple now!" I am currently a graduate student studying geophysics at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois and will be graduating with my Master of Science degree in May 2016. No one should be made to feel that learning is unapproachable! In my "arts life," I founded a pop-up gallery devoted to a democratized sharing of art with consistent workshops, free entry, and discussion sessions. I have also spent much of my life in other countries including England, the Netherlands, and Turkey, and I prize the diverse outlook that has given me. Although my focus has been English tutoring, I extend this philosophy across school and test prep subjects.
