I grew up in Southern California and attended the University of California at Santa Barbara until I graduated in 2008 with a degree in history. After being told to pursue a higher degree by my adviser, Dr. Harold Marcuse, I was accepted to CSU Pomona, where I obtained my Master's in History in 2010 with a focus on the Communist Party of the United States. My interests in the Communist Party extended from my studies of Cold War history at UCSB, and drove me to understand more about the Party's involvement with specific union organizing efforts during the 1930s. My Master's thesis exposed the connection between the CPUSA and one of their agricultural unions, the United Cannery, Agricultural, Packing and Allied Workers of America (UCAPAWA) and discussed the impact the union made on agricultural unionism in an era where national labor legislation did not protect agricultural workers. My thesis was welcomed as a special presentation at the 2011 Working-Class Studies Association held in Chicago, where I received positive feedback on my use of agriculture as a field for highlighting the ongoing importance of American Communist history and its ties with the U.S. Labor Movement. Following graduation in 2010, I began to dive actively into collecting oral histories of the CPUSA with the intention of hopefully one day donating it to the special collections at the Walter Reuther Library here at Wayne State. I was advised about Wayne State by my off-campus adviser, Dr. Vicki Ruiz. Over the course of five years, I collected 14 oral histories of current and non-current members of the CPUSA, ranging from its oldest generations to its youngest. After collecting a few testimonies, I sent parts of my work to the North American Labor History Conference here at Wayne State in 2012 to emphasize my desires to expand the available sourcework on CPUSA history as well as deposit the records at the Reuther. To emphasize my point, I presented three of the collected oral histories and showed how their stories unveil a side of American Communist history unavailable in existing scholarly works. I presented again at the NALHC in 2013 to show how quick I had expanded the amount of oral histories.Currently I am working in the PhD Program at Wayne to utilize my collected oral histories as a means for writing a generational history of the Communist Party in the United States and thus a narrative history of American Communism through the eyes of American Communists. This stands in contrast to existing narratives, which use FBI files and internal Party documents to craft the Party's overall meaning and history. This approach, while useful in understanding the political dimensions of American Communism, does little to show the history of American Communists as people. I am applying for the Graduate Professional Scholarship because it is one of the primary ways for me to continue this project and complete my degree. My oral history project alone has required me to seek out funding to support its ongoing development. The Graduate Professional Scholarship would ensure that whatever funding I have available can be put towards advancing the amount of research done, and ultimately lead to a better overall contribution to the historical record.

I recently graduated summa cum laud from Taylor University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy. While there I tutored philosophy, political science, and religious studies students for two years. I am currently working on a Master of Arts in Philosophy at Georgia State University, where I serve as a teaching assistant and writing consultant. I currently tutor in the areas of test preparation, government, philosophy, and religious studies. My passion for education stems from the joy I find in helping students achieve their goals. My teaching style involves asking lots of strategic questions to help students discover answers for themselves, a process which my students typically find quite empowering. Still, I recognize that each student has unique needs, questions, and learning styles, so I strive to listen first and then craft individualized plans to meet each student's particular objectives. In my spare time I like to get outside hiking, playing soccer, or volunteering at my church's community garden. I also enjoy reading, watching football, and cooking.

I graduated from Illinois State University in 2010 with a B.A. in English, receiving three different honors distinctions. I had a second major in Psychology and three minors, including French, cognitive science, and TESOL. Following graduation, I joined the Peace Corps and worked in Benin (West Africa) as an English teacher for two years, taking many opportunities along the way to do projects focused on women’s empowerment and girls’ education. I tutored many students in English, helping some catch up in class and also working with gifted students on areas that interested them. I stayed a third year to coordinate a peer-education health project and returned to the Chicago area in August 2013. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but really enjoy working with students on French language and English writing and grammar because, throughout my years of studying these subjects, I’ve come up with a lot of fun and creative ways to learn them that I’d love to share with students. I’ve worked very hard to prepare for standardized tests and I understand the difficulties they can sometimes pose, so I’m also excited to help students tackle these important exams. I strongly believe in the value of education and that every day is an opportunity to learn something new. In terms of hobbies, I enjoy gymnastics, circus arts (I was a performer for four years), hiking (I summited Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2011), cooking, and reading (especially science fiction).

I am a doctoral student in linguistic anthropology at Michigan State University, where I previously received two bachelor's degrees in professional writing and comparative cultures and politics with a minor in Spanish. After graduating, I worked as a behavior aide in an elementary school helping students in need of extra behavioral support in the classroom and in social situations. The following year, I was a long-term substitute Spanish teacher for grades pre-K through 8th, where I gained experience developing lesson plans for exploratory Spanish all the way up to students receiving high school credit for Spanish 1.I am eager to tutor because I absolutely love both teaching and being a student myself. For that reason, I enjoy tutoring a wide range of topics and getting to learn new things as I engage in the material I'm working on with students. While I am most passionate about topics in the social sciences and humanities, I also love math and am proficient in Spanish. I love working with students of all ages and helping support students as they navigate coursework, tests, and essays.

I am a graduate of Vanderbilt University and Harvard University. I received my bachelor's degree in secondary education and English and my master's degree in learning, teaching, and instructional leadership (with a language and literacy concentration). I am a former English teacher, reading specialist, and instructional coach, and I have taught a wide range of students: from pre-K to post-secondary. I am a current doctoral student at Michigan State University; having supported students' literacy development for nearly two decades, I currently coach current teachers and help them support their students' literacy development as well. One of my favorite quotes about teaching is, "the best that the great teachers can do for us is help us discover what is already present in ourselves." I am passionate about helping students uncover their potential and grow as critical thinkers, readers, and writers. In my free time, I really enjoy reading, drinking coffee, spending time with friends and family, cooking and eating, laughing, listening to live music, playing games, attending sporting events, watching movies, walking our dogs, and hiking/ running/ biking/ yoga-ing.
