I graduated from Gordon College in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. I focused on political relations in Europe and Latin America. After graduating, I received my Master's in International Relations, where I specialized in Spain-US relations. I have worked or interned for the Department of State, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and two members of the United States Congress. I also had the opportunity to study at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain, investigating international financial systems during the 2007-08 Financial Crisis. I had my first taste of teaching as an ESL volunteer as an undergraduate. I knew I had a passion for instructing; so while a student, I worked as a Teaching Assistant and later a Graduate Assistant for undergraduate courses. Don't let my Irish-American name fool you, I have worked in Spanish, French, and Catalan at the professional level. I plan to pursue a law degree in the near future. I bring eight years of research and writing and teaching in the US, Spain, Canada, and Chile, and I'm excited to bring my diverse background to the table in order to help you reach your educational goals.

I earned a BA in Philosophy and Italian Literature form the University of Pittsburgh and an MS in Logic and Computation from Carnegie Mellon University. I have taught and served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate level courses in philosophy at both Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania. This gives me first-hand knowledge of what level of academic excellence is expected at some of the best universities in the country. All of these courses, with the exception of logic, required students to write essays. A substantial portion of my time was dedicated to helping students improve their academic writing. This experience taught me the most common problems students encounter in academic writing including lack of clarity, redundancy, the inability to structure an argument, and the most common spelling and grammar mistakes. It also forced me to develop ways of getting students to identify and correct these errors. This involved spending a lot of individual time with students and helping them through the revision process. The most important aspect of this was getting them to see that writing is a process. This understanding generally made them more patient and open to feedback.Philosophy and logic are both exceptionally abstract subjects. Teaching them to undergraduates requires patience and the ability to explain things as simply as possible. It is also important to recognize the signs of confusion. Students do not always tell you when they are confused (and sometimes they themselves do not think they are confused), and so it is vital to maintain interaction with students and to continually check for understanding. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of teaching, and I always conveyed my enthusiasm for the subject and the learning process. This is vital to maintain students' motivation and to keep their attention. For my efforts, I was nominated by my students for the Graduate Student Teaching Award at Penn.Since that time, I have continued teaching as a private tutor in English, Writing, Italian, and Philosophy. I have also edited countless undergraduate essays. I particularly enjoy helping students with the writing process. It is extremely satisfying to aid in the development of an important lifelong skill. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy cooking. I am particularly interested in traditional methods of food processing from all over the world. Many of my favorite recipes have been given to me by my students. My other great love is travel. I have lived in Europe and travel often to Italy where I have family.

In 2012 I graduated magna cum laude from George Washington University with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Chinese language and literature. Since then, I have gained significant experience tutoring while teaching English in Shenzhen, China. I am comfortable teaching in a wide variety of subjects, and am especially confident in English, writing, Mandarin Chinese, and LSAT prep. I have found that a relationship of respect and equality with students is essential to a worthwhile tutoring experience. I pride myself on my ability to break down difficult concepts and create ways to understand them. My schedule is flexible and so is my teaching style--I will tailor my approach based on whether the focus is on improving test scores, classroom performance, or general knowledge. I prefer to meet in a public area near the university, but if necessary can arrange to meet elsewhere. I look forward to hearing from you!

Hola a todos! I offer personalized Spanish tutoring for beginner to advanced Spanish students or travelers. I fell in love with the language and culture and decided to double major in Psychology and Hispanic Studies. My fluency really took flight during my semester abroad in La Plata, Argentina. My senior year at the College of William and Mary, I was a TA (Teacher's Assistant) for the Hispanic Studies Department. This opportunity gave me the chance to design and conduct lessons every week for Intermediate Spanish classes. After graduation, I returned to South America for a temporary teaching position in Lima, Per. My position as an English instructor afforded me the opportunity to interact with native Spanish speakers on a daily basis.More than anything I believe Spanish is like an instrument. Once you understand the rules of grammar, comparable to parts of the instrument, you can make "music." Spanish for me isn't just a hobby, it's what allows me to connect with other people on a fully personal level; it has taught me empathy, compassion and vulnerability. It's a humble instrument that gives perspective into another walk of life. I want those who I work with to understand that Spanish is what you make of it, there is no limit!

I have been tutoring for over five years and would love the opportunity to work with you to help you to not only achieve your immediate goals (passing a class, test, etc), but also foster a deeper understanding of the subject matter that will help you into the future. I'm certified to teach from kindergarten to grade 12. The liberal arts curriculum I took at St. John's University has ensured that I not only can tutor students in technical fields but also humanities. I am a savvy test taker and would be able to teach your child not only the content necessary to excel at an exam and other standardized tests, but also how to utilize strategies to maximize efficiency and accuracy. In teaching, I enjoy connecting the subject matter to topics that would not necessarily seem relevant to the lesson in order to engage the student on a deeper level. I can tutor many subjects, Algebra, Algebra 2, Algebra 3/4, Arithmetic, College Algebra, Elementary Math, Geometry, Linear Algebra, Middle School Math, Pre-Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Nutrition, Physical Science, AP Spanish Language, AP Spanish Literature and Culture, Spanish, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, Spanish 3, Spanish 4, Advanced Placement, Essay Editing, Grammar and Mechanics, Phonics, Public Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

I am a graduate student at the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. I am completing my masters degree in Conservation Ecology. My research topic is agroecology, specifically how carbon and nitrogen ratios in from shade trees in coffee agroecosystems influence ground-dwelling ant communities. My over-arching theme is decomposition and nutrient cycling in ecosystems and I got about answering questions about this in various ways (e.g. ants). At the University of Michigan, I have served as a graduate student instructor in two courses both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Having the opportunity to teach and mentor students at those levels is very exciting. Nevertheless, I love to introduce students all levels of new concepts and ideas. I most enjoy teaching/tutoring concepts of ecology, biology, chemistry, and environmental science. I am also a native Spanish speaker, hence tutoring Spanish lessons comes naturally to me. I am committed to helping move beyond their barriers and excel in their education. When I am not in the laboratory, I enjoy running, hiking and training with my dog.
