I graduated from Gordon College in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. I focused on political relations in Europe and Latin America. After graduating, I received my Master's in International Relations, where I specialized in Spain-US relations. I have worked or interned for the Department of State, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and two members of the United States Congress. I also had the opportunity to study at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain, investigating international financial systems during the 2007-08 Financial Crisis. I had my first taste of teaching as an ESL volunteer as an undergraduate. I knew I had a passion for instructing; so while a student, I worked as a Teaching Assistant and later a Graduate Assistant for undergraduate courses. Don't let my Irish-American name fool you, I have worked in Spanish, French, and Catalan at the professional level. I plan to pursue a law degree in the near future. I bring eight years of research and writing and teaching in the US, Spain, Canada, and Chile, and I'm excited to bring my diverse background to the table in order to help you reach your educational goals.

I earned a BA in Philosophy and Italian Literature form the University of Pittsburgh and an MS in Logic and Computation from Carnegie Mellon University. I have taught and served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate level courses in philosophy at both Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania. All of these courses, with the exception of logic, required students to write essays. A substantial portion of my time was dedicated to helping students improve their academic writing. Teaching them to undergraduates requires patience and the ability to explain things as simply as possible. It is also important to recognize the signs of confusion. Students do not always tell you when they are confused (and sometimes they themselves do not think they are confused), and so it is vital to maintain interaction with students and to continually check for understanding. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of teaching, and I always conveyed my enthusiasm for the subject and the learning process. This is vital to maintain students' motivation and to keep their attention. My research topic is agroecology, specifically how carbon and nitrogen ratios in from shade trees in coffee agroecosystems influence ground-dwelling ant communities. My over-arching theme is decomposition and nutrient cycling in ecosystems and I got about answering questions about this in various ways (e.g. ants). At the University of Michigan, I have served as a graduate student instructor in two courses both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Having the opportunity to teach and mentor students at those levels is very exciting. Nevertheless, I love to introduce students all levels of new concepts and ideas.
