Hello! I'm Sara, originally hailing from New York City though currently on a wild adventure backpacking around the world. But don't worry--I still have prime access to solid internet connection and the flexibility to help as much as needed. As a New Yorker born and raised, I'm very well acquainted with the intense demands of the NYC school system (both public and private). I'm here to help students understand that they have what it takes to be a solid writer, and as a result, hopefully, lessen the pressure and stress that I know that students today are under. After a two-year stint in high school leading a course aimed to help ease the transition of incoming freshman into my school, I knew I wanted to continue working with students in whatever way I could moving forward. In college, I enrolled in a writing-tutoring program that landed me two jobs on my campus's writing center. As a writing fellow, each semester I worked closely with students in a freshman writing-intensive English class aimed to bring everyone up to the same collegiate writing level. As a writing tutor, I held general weekly office hours that were open to any student seeking a tutoring session for any stage of their writingprocess across all subjects. In addition to these tutoring positions, I also worked on Colby's student newspaper The Colby Echo as the head copy editor. What I enjoy the most about tutoring is seeing students realize their own potential and gain confidence as they start to discover what they're truly capable of. Even while on the road, reading and writing will always be a passion of mine and I'm eager to help lessen the fear factor that I know it can often hold for others.

I have a real passion for working with others. I am currently a 3rd grade teacher for Anne Arundel County Public Schools. I have been in the same elementary school for almost 12 years. I absolutely love what I do and cannot ever see myself doing anything different. Ever since I can remember I had wanted to become a teacher. There is such a joy that comes from interacting with my students and getting to know them and watching them grow, both personally and academically. I believe that there is always a way to be successful, no matter what obstacles may stand in the way.I love to read, especially on the summer and sit in the sun, at the beach with my toes in the sand! I have recently began dabbling in restoring old furniture as I absolutely love antique and rustic decor. I try to be crafty and creative and tap onto my artsy side.

I love tutoring and I've been doing it for a long time. This gives me the experience to know how to approach just about any challenge. I'm very personable, have a sense of humor, and I'm very creative. An important characteristic for a tutor to have is patience. That is ultimately one of my greatest strengths. Another strength is pronunciation in English, both for adults & children. I speak other languages, so I pay close attention to pronunciation. My background includes specialized training in brain growth and development, from crib to cane, basically. How can that help your child? Well, I really know how memory is formed, retained, and recalled, and what it looks like when something is not happening the way it should. I can usually pinpoint an issue quickly, and work in a slightly different way from other tutors. I have solutions for many learning challenges. For example, I once had a 3rd grader who wasn't reading fluently, and her comprehension was below grade level. Her mom said she had tried so many people and approaches, but no luck. I was able to find out what the problem was within 10 minutes, did a quick 15-min training, and sent her back to her mom who was beside herself in joy.I enjoy working with all ages of students, but especially with primary age students because they still have a sense of wonder and awe about life. I have positive experiences describing/showing concepts to this age group, especially with manipulatives (hands-on materials). My husband and I have raised two sons, who have been through Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland. In most years, this school system has been ranked either #1 or #2 in the nation. So I really can relate to many of the worries a parent can have. Just know that in the end, I make sure it's all good. Please send any questions through Varsity Tutors. I look forward to meeting you!

I am a graduate of The Brearley School and Juilliard Pre-College, as well as a current student at Carleton College where I am studying Anthropology and Archaeology. I have previous tutoring experience in both essay writing/editing and SAT verbal. The subjects I am most passionate about are History, English, Creative Writing, and Literature. I truly love everything related to history, and am constantly reading and learning about the subject on my own time. My tutoring approach is to make the sessions as helpful and comfortable for the student as possible. I strongly believe that a student's best work is done in an environment where they feel they can ask questions and learn at their own pace.
