For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. I believe that teaching is more than a job, more than a career; it is a calling. Making a difference in the lives of others is important to me. I can't think of another job that offers that opportunity as much as teaching.

My tutoring approach is one of coaching, mentoring, and helping the student understand exactly what level and detail of help that they need to get ahead. Combining the personal discipline learned during 20 years as a Naval Officer with the unique expertise learned in one-on-one communication with peers and sailors as well as my five children, I can help you or your child succeed.A Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, and a Math Minor help qualify me for tutoring in many subjects. My individualized tutoring methods also raised my step-son's Physics grade from a C to an A in one semester.I specialize in mathematics (basic arithmetic through calculus) but can help in many other subjects.Learning should be fun, but should also, at times, bring "Instant" results. I work to keep positive encouragement in every lesson, tutoring, or test preparation session.I speak fluent Spanish!

From October 2009 through August 2014, I worked as a tutor (20+ hours per week) with a highly respected tutoring company. I tutored students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math. I also prepared students for the SAT and ISEE.In September 2013, I started my own business doing private tutoring. I have continued to work with students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math, and I have continued to prepare students for the SAT and ISEE. In general, about half of my students are doing test preparation and half are getting some kind of help with school. At the tutoring center where I worked, we had a number of students who were being tutored in order to become very advanced in their studies at school and to gain admission to highly selective colleges by getting top-notch scores on their SAT. We also had students who were struggling to do well in their classes and therefore needed help with their homework and with understanding the material they were learning in school. I worked successfully with both kinds of students. My approach to tutoring is definitely gentle, but also firm in terms of expecting my students to work hard during the tutoring sessions and to work diligently on any homework I might assign. I am sensitive to the learning styles of my students and do everything I can to communicate in a way that makes sense to them. I often make use of visuals and manipulatives in teaching various concepts. My goal is to enable students to really understand the material they are studying.I am happy to use whatever school or other materials that parents and/or students would like. I am also prepared to suggest additional materials that might be helpful for a particular student in a specific subject area. I am familiar with a number of very helpful resources. Before working at the tutoring center, I was actively involved in the homeschooling community. I homeschooled my older two children through high school and my younger two children through 8th grade. I also taught enrichment classes in the areas of math, science, music, and art to students of all ages in a homeschool co-op, for a total of eight years.

I have taught and tutored students of all ages, from preschool to undergraduate, particularly enjoying my work with ESL students and students with disabilities. I am especially passionate about foreign languages, the humanities, and social sciences. I received four consecutive gold medals on the National Latin Exam when I was in high school, so I am eager to help students who are struggling with the subject. I also specialize in the areas of English-language writing, grammar, and reading comprehension. I have wanted to be a teacher from a rather young age, and I am grateful to have the chance to help dedicated students to achieve academically.

My educational philosophy holds that all students are highly educable and are capable of becoming constructive and valuable members of society. It is therefore my responsibility as a teacher to meet each student at the point of his/her capability and knowledge, and to nurture, encourage, and instruct him/her in order that the student may realize his/her full potential. Students have a variety of learning styles, and my instruction must be designed to engage a diverse group of learners. It is my obligation to keep abreast of evolving theories of learning, pedagogical practices, and developments in educational technology, while maintaining the core values of a humane and holistic education. It is imperative that a teacher first be an eager learner, and that he/she has a profound desire to share that enthusiasm for learning, as well a body of knowledge in his/her discipline, with each and every student. It is the mission of a tutor to provide a bridge for his/her students to enhance their skills in the interest of vocational pursuits and/or for further higher education. Education must be seen as a lifelong pursuit that will enrich all aspects of our lives, and I wish to share that vision with my students.

A graduate of Bucknell University, I have studied both English and Business Management as an undergraduate and worked on Wall Street before discovering a love of teaching.I call upon both my humanities and math sides in tutoring for all sections of the SAT and ACT. My SAT and ACT students have been admitted to colleges including Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Hamilton.I also have abundant experience working with younger students for private school entrance exams and my ISEE, HSPT and SSAT students have been accepted into the independent schools of their choice. I am highly effective at making the process of learning as enjoyable and fun as possible. As the oldest of four boys, I relate easily to students, and my tutoring sessions can feel like studying with a friend, albeit a friend who is helping them improve their scores. By making the material relatable and communicating it in simple terms, I get many students to understand seemingly difficult-to-grasp subject matter.I take great joy in seeing the moment a concept clicks in a student's head and seeing that student subsequently master a topic that never seemed possible to conquer.
