Hello!I am a new teacher and a recent graduate of Heritage University and I am excited and eager to begin my career as an educator..I am looking for a change in scenery and new experiences, so I just moved from my hometown of Kennewick, Washington. I am so excited to be living in beautiful Northwest Washington! I hold a Masters degree in teaching with an endorsement in elementary education. I am highly qualified in middle level science, middle level mathematics, and Japanese. I have five years of experience in working with students from diverse populations, both here in Washington and abroad in Japan and South Korea. I also have 2 years of experience serving as a literacy tutor and community volunteer for the Regional Service Corps AmeriCorps. Through my studies at Heritage University I have received training in GLAD strategies, differentiated instruction, "Love and Logic" classroom management, formative classroom assessment, and inquiry-based science instruction. I completed my student teaching assignment in a 6th grade life science classroom where I based my lessons around the Washington state standards and the FOSS science kit program.I believe that it is an educator's most important task to help children gain a love for learning. If learning is fun, hands-on, and informative, it will be more likely that students will take an active role in their education and strive to reach further. As Rudolf Dreikurs said, “The development of a child's potential depends on the ability of the teacher to perceive the child's possibilities, to stimulate the child to learn, and thereby make the child's latent potentiality a reality.” When I taught elementary school in Korea, it quickly became apparent that Korean students were not being taught to question and think for themselves. Students in Korea were taught to memorize information. They were not taught how to think critically or to ask questions. They were taught to be obedient and to trust what their elders told them. I was shocked because this was against everything that I believed an education should be. I want my students to think outside the box and to think critically. I do not want my students to believe everything I tell them just because I am the teacher. I don't want my students to just accept things that they do not fully understand. I want my students to question me if they think I am wrong, do their own research, and decide what they believe is true based on their own experiences and observations. These will be the most important lesson that I teach my students.I believe that for a child to be truly successful in life it is important that they have a strong sense of what is right and wrong, the ability to think critically and to ask questions, the heart to care for those around them, and a love for learning. I will strive to help my students become successful, not only in their studies, but also in their path to becoming responsible, caring adults. This is my goal as an educator. As John Steinbeck once wrote, “I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.”

I graduated from Boston University this past semester, but I have been tutoring and teaching other people since I was in eighth grade. Nine years ago I began tutoring students in Mathematics and Chemistry for volunteer hours and simultaneously began teaching swimming lessons to children of all ages. Ever since I started I have only grown more and more fond of helping those around me improve themselves in various disciplines. In these past nine years, I have expanded my range of tutoring to subjects such as Psychology, Neuroscience, Statistics, and even the Korean language. I earned my degree in Neuroscience, but I am currently training to become an actuary, so my areas of expertise cover a wide array of topics. I believe in taking an open-minded approach for my tutoring, and based on my students' strengths and weaknesses I like to develop a unique tutoring style. This most often ranges from focusing on being able to explain concepts in words, to taking a more visual approach and looking at the big picture, to working through problems to figure out areas of difficulty. In my free time, I really enjoy playing alto saxophone and electric guitar, as well as working out at the gym and swimming laps in the pool. I have also been known to binge-watch TV shows and movie series on Netflix. I look forward to meeting and getting to know you as well as passing on my knowledge and skills as a student/teacher.

Everyone has a unique life experience of his or her own; I certainly have a particularly unusually varied background where I have pursued initially in music (the piano), then liberal arts (linguistic), and eventually health science--I received my DDS degree from NYU and practiced as a general dentist. I strongly believe my learning experience could help any students certainly with the regular academics but also life lesson in general.Until recently, I was teaching a class of about fifteen 5th graders during weekdays and a larger group of 6th graders on Saturdays at a private after-school program in Queens, NY. I learned many valuable lessons as a teacher and a counselor--the most crucial of all was how to keep the students motivated and maintain their academic stimulation. My students did well, and it gave me such joy as I noticed their academic progress and improvement. I made sure that each and every student was feeling as if they were given plenty of personal and individual attention BY ACTUALLY GIVING PLENTY OF PERSONAL AND INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION! Sounds simple enough but rather easier said than done, and I pride myself in managing to do so.I believe that the first and foremost of teaching math, as in any subject, is the firm establishment and thorough understanding of the basic concepts and fundamentals. Learning is consequential; without the firm basic core, the students cannot progress further. I have witnessed those students who were forced to move on to the next levels without fully understanding the basic fundamentals, and as a result, they struggled and even developed the fear of learning! Not with me. I believe in individualized, custom-made teaching, if you will.I am an avid runner, and in fact, having done several half-marathons, now I am registered and training for my first full marathon later this year: NYC Marathon 2015! Wish me luck! Also, being a former piano major and a lifetime music lover, I still perform chamber music as a hobby and attend concerts and operas frequently, and of course, I'm also a great fan of the theatres in general, musicals as well as plays. After all, I live in New York City.

I was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea until I moved to the U.S. at the age of 19 to attend the State University of New York at Buffalo (University at Buffalo). I received my Bachelor of Arts in Media Study with a focus on Film & TV Production. Before graduating, I started my own film production company, where I've created music videos for various artists and commercials for such brands as Nike and Lotus Cars. I have also taught English in South Korea for two years. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Korean, and Filmmaking. I truly believe learning a language should be approached with the right amount of academia and the hands-on experience; I will provide a practical environment where students can learn the Korean culture, history, and expressions that they can't learn from the books. As I am extremely knowledgable in Entertainment industry both in America and South Korea, the entire class could be taught in Korean with such topics as K-CULTURE, K-POP, K-Drama, and K-Beauty. In my spare time, I enjoy working out, watching movies, and playing board games.
