I am a graduate of The University of Houston - Downtown. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. I also hold a Master's in Educational Administration from Sam Houston State University. I have taught in both the public and private sectors. I have experience teaching from elementary through college. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Math. I most appreciate helping struggling students master difficult concepts. I am a firm proponent of education; I grew up in poverty and I believe that education is the biggest equalizer when it comes to economic inequities. My past mathematical research has included work with Markov chains, random walks, and combinatorial optimization.I tutored briefly in my freshman year of college, in addition to being a homework grader for calculus classes. For the past two summers, I have worked at Epsilon Camp, which is a summer camp for students who are profoundly gifted in mathematics. My experience there inspired me to start tutoring again.I believe that all students learn a little differently, and though schools try their best they can't account for every learning style. My goal is to adapt my instruction to each student's preferences in order to help them as much as I can.In my free time, I like to play ice hockey (or just skate), knit, do yoga, and read, especially epic fantasy (I may or may not have all the Lord of the Rings books memorized). I have instructed students 2nd through 12th grade at a math tutoring center where I acquired a variety of methods for teaching math skills and numerical fluency. My personal strength is in identifying an individual's challenges and figuring out an approach that will work with that person's style of thinking. I excel at making math fun and interesting for students. I am also conversational in Spanish. In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with my kids, hiking, watching movies, listening to podcasts and playing with our new cat.

I did my undergraduate work at Arizona University, where I majored in Psychology, with a minor in Statistics. While I tutor Chinese, Psychology, and math I find math the most interesting and challenging. I like to explain the world with math concepts, which is easy and beautiful. Since I studied my math in China, I feel comfortable to transfer these concepts to the US classroom.I consider math and psychology as sciences and I believe the two can be used to understand each other.Besides math and psychology, as I've mentioned, I also tutor Chinese. In fact, I am currently tutoring an elementary student. Through my tutoring experience I have found ways to modify standards and to to gain feedback from my student. As I am a linguistic lover, I like to explore the language field with my student by sharing the topics we both like most.In the free time, I like to read new academic information in my field of study, play basketball and travel. Having a degree in chemistry with emphases in mathematics and environmental science, I am meticulous about understanding the material itself as well as understanding why the material applies to you in your own personal life. I worked in academia for 4+ years and after graduating with my Master of Science degree I went to work in the energy (oil and gas) industry for 11+ years and now I am returning to academia because I really enjoy working with young minded students and helping them understand and master science subjects especially chemistry.

In addition to earning my Bachelor's in Information Systems from Carnegie Mellon University in 2006 and working as a web/database developer, I recently completed my Master's and teaching certification from the University of Pittsburgh this past June. I am also currently working on finishing the English Learner Authorization required for certification in California before I begin teaching high school math full-time.Last year during graduate school, I was tutoring mainly SAT and ACT prep as well as several other middle and high school students in subjects from Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calculus, even Life Science, and helping one student organize and prepare a book report presentation. While I have honestly loved them all, I am most passionate about Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry, and I actually taught two classes in that material during my internship. Since it is such a departure from the type of mathematics students are used to before they get to that level, I really loved serving as their guide to open their minds to a new perspective with the help of my progressive graduate school training. I could not have asked for better students, and we even went out as a group to lunch and a local amusement park after the year was over.Part of my inspiration is to help all students of differing performance and interest levels since I truly feel that we are all capable of having a logically-developed mind, which is what mathematics really is. Of course, many people think that they hate and are bad at math, but this is often more due to a teacher not showing them the beauty of it and how everything makes sense. It is not like other fields that facts from history are disproven with new technologies.I am from Philadelphia, so I am a huge Flyers fan, and I love hockey in general. Being a Turk, I also love soccer (futbol) and watch as many EPL and MLS games as I can. I'm also a big classic metal fan, such as Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath. While it might seem odd that I also love geeky things such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and board games, many of the old metal bands now look like they could fit right into a LOTR movie.

I tutor math at all levels and mostly focus on math, but can also cover theoretical CS, programming in Java & C, and basic physics. I've tutored students in high school through the math honor society, and continued tutoring in college through the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education. My long term plan after graduation is to enter grad school, get a PhD in math, and eventually become a math professor, researching and lecturing throughout the whole process.

Through my time as a student at a high caliber university, I have acquired the time management and efficient studying skills that led to my overall success in academia. My tutoring background includes a position on the Peer Tutoring Committee of my high school, and the role of a Teaching Assistant at Vanderbilt University. These positions have allowed me to improve my ability to articulate concepts to other students. During my time in high school, I took numerous AP examinations, PSAT, SAT and ACT. I also participated in test prep courses which gave me insight into standardized test taking techniques for success.
