I am currently a full-time mathematics professor at a community college, where I teach both online and on-ground classes. Before this position, I worked as a graduate teaching assistant and then a visiting instructor at Michigan State University. I even taught high school mathematics for a year prior to that.When I am teaching or tutoring a student, I always try to abide by the motto: "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." This motto has helped me focus on being a good listener, which I believe has made me a very effective instructor/tutor. When a student says that he/she does not understand a concept, I will often ask him/her a couple follow-up questions in an effort to identify the root cause of his/her misconception. Then the student and I can go to work on clearing up this misconception. In general, my goal is to help students first understand WHY certain mathematical principles work, because then it will be easier for them to learn HOW to apply them appropriately.

A native Texan, I grew up in Houston and attended St. Thomas High School before moving to Austin to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin. I graduated from UT just this May with special departmental honors in math for my 20+ hours of graduate level coursework and senior research thesis. Currently, I am a first year pure math PhD student at Boston College.While at UT I worked for three years as an undergraduate teaching assistant and grader for multiple classes, including calculus (I, II, and III) and discrete math. There are few things more enjoyable than being of service to students trying to learn difficult material and seeing the gears in their heads start to turn as their confidence builds. I truly love studying math, and I work hard to communicate the beauty in math to all of my students.Having studied math at an advanced level for a few years now, I have a privileged insight into the rich structure of mathematics. I have worked in fields that are as difficult compared to calculus as calculus is compared to basic multiplication tables. As a result, I have developed a mastery of material from high school and early college level math, and I have spent the last three years practicing the way I communicate math so that assignments stop seeming like lifeless and disconnected assortments of problems. Because of my degree, I am extremely qualified to tutor different subjects in mathematics. I do great in Algebra, Calculus, and Geometry because I love those subjects as much as I understand them.While I was obtaining my degree I worked through a school program to tutor fellow students in Algebra and Calculus. I worked with them step by step to help them understand the concepts so they could succeed on their own. I believe that the purpose of a tutor is not to do the work of student, but to help the student develop skills to properly understand what is happening and how to do the work.When I am not tutoring or talking about math or other sciences, I am playing video games, exercising, reading, or writing scifi/fantasy. I still work there today, but now as a group Manager. We produceindustrial grade solid-state lasers that are used in many applications. Most notably,many of our laser systems are used to process the glass and electronics used inmany Apple and Samsung cellphones and other electronics.I have a passion for mathematics and sciences and I have been tutoring others eversince I was in high school. I believe that I can make positive contributions to anystudent's academic endeavors.
