I'm a total fan of Stanford's d.school, where the curriculum is all about the "design thinking" framework for creative problem solving pioneered by the international design firm IDEO. While typically used in startups to develop new innovations, I've found it extremely handy in tutoring. Every studen...

I earned my PhD in physics (New York University) and work in nanotechnology research and development. I worked as a teaching assistant throughout my graduate school years (which there were seven of!), also taking on a number of private tutoring students during that time. My teaching experience has been in physics and in several areas of mathematics, from algebra through calculus. I've also tutored my own children successfully through math and physics over the years.I enjoy teaching these subjects because students can be helped to excel in them by learning to think in a quantitative way. This skill is important for life in our technological society. The best way to teach goes beyond "picking the right formula to use." Mastery of this type of subject matter comes from being able to ask "what is it I'm trying to accomplish by asking this question? What is the item - that can be quantified - that I need to extract from the problem material at hand?" Then the formula becomes a tool to aid in turning the data into a solution.

I am a highly motivated professional who graduated from the University of California Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics. I have started tutoring 8 years ago. Transmitting my knowledge has always fascinated me. I have worked with a variety of student ranging from 5 to 35 years old. I am very patient and always using efficient techniques in order to explain concepts to my tutees. I worked with both LAUSD and LA's Best After-School Enrichment program where I had to create age-appropriate lesson plans. I enjoy making Mathematics easier for my tutees.

6th Grade AP Language Composition Tutor • +104 Subjects
I have been a classroom teacher for many years working with grades 6-12 in the areas of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Additionally, I have worked as a tutor and have found that work to be the most rewarding as it allows me to interact more closely with individual students as we work on skill development and building confidence. Test prep has been a focus of my tutoring, helping students prepare for high school entrance or placement tests, SAT, ACT, and graduate tests. Whether I am tutoring for test prep or for school subjects, my goal is always to inspire, educate, and motivate each student to grow and learn.

I first started tutoring others while in high school. I casually tutored some of my friends and peers who needed help in mutual classes, such as AP Calculus, AP Stats, and AP Physics. I became more involved with formal tutoring as a member of National Honor Society. I was active in tutoring both peers in my own age group, as well as those younger than me in subjects like Calculus and Physics. After I went to college, I went back to informally tutoring some of my friends in classes that we were taking together or that I had already taken. Some of these classes included general chemistry and some organic chemistry, as well as calculus and statics and dynamics in biological systems. At my university, I am getting back into formal tutoring by becoming a teaching assistant for a biology lab/lecture that I took in the past and did well in. I have always enjoyed trying to help others understand subjects that are more difficult to grasp. I believe I have a good understanding of effective teaching methods. I believe that the best ways to learn material are through practicing problems, through making sure each component of a problem is understood, and through methods such as mnemonic devices.I am currently an undergrad at Stony Brook University. I am a Biomedical Engineering major on a cellular and molecular track. When I am not in school and have free time, I enjoy fishing, playing and watching hockey, and catching up and spending time with friends.

James
ACT Prep Tutor • +39 Subjects
Hi, My name is James and I would like to be your tutor. I've been a tutor for 5+ years working with individuals, in groups, online and in person. Most of my time tutoring has been with student who are looking to improve their SAT ACT and SSAT scores but I have also worked with a variety of AP tests. If I were to describe my teaching style, when it comes to standardized tests I'm not someone who likes to focus on memorization or learning specific math or grammar rules. I believe more points can be won/lost based on the process that a student uses to answer questions. How many times have you looked at the answers to a question you got wrong on a test and realized that you knew how to find the answer you just made a simple mistake. I can help you make less of those mistakes, and that is where the most significant short term growth can be made.If you are a student who wants to improve your score quickly, if you like learning new ways to solve old problems, if you are looking for multiple choice test taking techniques that you can apply for the rest of your academic career, if you like low pressure studying and making quick jokes, give tutoring with James a try!
Karthik
Abstract Algebra Tutor • +56 Subjects
Greetings, my name is Karthik! My undergraduate major was math and physics through Northeastern University, and I currently am working on a master's in medical physics at the University of Kentucky. Both have required a great deal of self-study, and my penchant for self-motivated learning was kick started by an experience I had in middle school. It was a 3-week summer program called VAMPY within which I learned to self-study on account of the math classes consisting primarily of studying out of a textbook, working problems, and taking exams with the professors and TAs only there to facilitate our learning but not to lecture or assign work outside of the exams. I did Algebra 2 the first time and Calculus 1 & 2 the second time, after which I was distinctly prepared to tackle more advanced material (e.g., linear algebra, real analysis, topology, and quantum mechanics). Before I ever started tutoring formally, it was not uncommon for peers to remark that I taught better than the teacher whenever I helped them with their work.I started tutoring formally in undergrad via a mix of online tutoring and university sponsored peer tutoring, later taking on responsibilities as a student grader and TA. I was the president of the math club and vice president of our chapter of the Society of Physics Students. While at first I was prone to lecturing due to my assumption that others found theory as elucidating as I, my sessions are now dominated by working through problems provided by either the student or me. Also software visualization is a boon whenever my drawing skills don't pass muster. Ultimately, my purpose is to cultivate disciplined learning and excellence in STEM, whether that be for a class or purely out of curiosity/passion, so please do not hesitate to reach out if you think I can help you achieve your goals.
