I'm excited to help students reach their goals, particularly students that have issues with the formats and nature of tests themselves. I know that testing itself can flummox some students who are otherwise bright and qualified, which is why I want to help them overcome this.

I am a native of Baltimore- I attended Gilman School for elementary through High school, and went to Dartmouth College for my undergraduate studies. I double majored in Environmental Studies and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Mandarin Chinese), and graduated with high honors. My tutoring philosophy is to focus on inquiry and engagement with the student to increase comprehension and enthusiasm for any materials. While my specialties are Mandarin Chinese and the environmental sciences, I have a deep enthusiasm for English, writing, grammar, history, and test preparation. I look forward to working with students of all ages to expand their knowledge and love of learning!

My name is June Dolber and I am a graduate of Tungfang University in Taiwan, Republic of China, where I received my Industrial Arts Diploma. My education and training have allowed me to view the written Chinese characters as an art form and to communicate fluently with the one billion people worldwide who speak this language as their mother tongue. Before pandemic, I have had the pleasure of teaching younger children as a first-grade Chinese school teacher for 3 years. This experience has helped me understand what is needed to support language learning for students of different ages, and it has also given me the opportunity to consolidate my own basic language skills. My passion for teaching Chinese Languages has also led me to tutor online. I am a strong believer in the philosophy that you live another life for each language you speak. The ability to communicate in additional languages gives you the ability to explore different worlds in great depths. In today's increasingly globalized world, it is particularly important for the younger generation of the English-speaking world to broaden their horizons, especially where language barriers may occur. As your teacher, I am committed to creating an engaging and supportive learning environment where you can develop your language skills and deepen your understanding of Chinese culture. Whether you are a beginner or have some experience with the language, I am here to guide you through the course and help you achieve your language goals.

I am currently a PhD student in I/O Psychology at Hofstra University. I am teaching an undergrad statistics class (in behavioral science), and I love the experience -- helping students always fill me with a sense of accomplishment which I enjoy. I have my strength in research methods and statistics, and these are the subjects that I have most experience teaching and practicing. I am properly equipped to help anyone from undergraduate to doctorate studies regarding these subjects. I am also bilingual in Chinese and English, so I can help with any Chinese related materials as well. I believe a great learning experience starts with a thorough assessment of what needs to be done. As such, anytime I meet with a student we first determine the issue on hand, and we work around the issue building necessary prior knowledge, clarifying/understanding challenging concepts, and/or practicing application of learned materials. My teaching style is always learner focused for example, how the student sees his/her problems is more important than how I see the issues. Recently I developed a lot of indoor activity interests, such as movies and books, which we can surely discuss during breaks!

As a native Chinese Mandarin speaker, I had been working full-time as a book editor in a Chinese university press for 19 years before I moved to the United States. I worked to help writers communicate information accurately, clearly and concisely, to ensure the written text to be published is consistent and grammatically and factually correct. This job entailed an excellent command of the Chinese language.I'm now teaching Chinese Mandarin to a broad group of students and levels. I provide learner-centered lessons to respond to your specific learning situations, goals, strengths and needs.I'm patient and friendly. I look forward to helping you with your Chinese!

I've committed myself to to the path of teaching because I derive purpose from the ancient and essential process of passing on knowledge and skills to others. I find the moments that I can see measurable progress in my students' study of the subjects I'm teaching to be deeply satisfying. I draw inspiration as an instructor both from great teachers I've had the pleasure of studying under in person and those whose ideas I've grown from ages after their time alike. After completing my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology/Anthropology at Florida International University I decided to move to China where I began my teaching career by teaching English at Chinese universities, colleges and language centers. I stayed in China for the majority of the time between 2010 and 2019, when I came back amid indications of a pandemic starting . I've been in the US since then I've taught English and Chinese on different platforms.During my time in China I also completed a master's degree in political science from at Renmin University of China. My master's thesis was on the impact on US-China relations of Americas grand strategy in the Indo-Pacific, in which I made several accurate projections of the emerging conditions of the international environment, among them increased militarization and regionalism in the context of the closing of the post Cold War conditions .It is for these reasons that aside from English and college applications essays I am positioned to teach beginner and intermediate level Chinese , and I can tutor students of international affairs and political science , especially those with an interest in Northeast Asia. Social sciences in general are perhaps my favorite subjects to teach because my academic interests are in social and political science as well. With regards to Chinese language teaching, I have had students with no experience before meeting me whatsoever and students that had been learning for up to two years before starting class with me. In planning classes with my students I first consult them/their parents on their goals and previous exposure to studying Chinese and proceed by asking them some basic questions or showing some simple sentences to measure their reading ability. I'm most suited to teaching students that have been studying Chinese for three years or less, but beyond this point any language student will be familiar with the need to regularly practice their speaking skills and am available for a more free flowing conversational style class for advanced students who may be interested. As for my English teaching , I can teach conversation, reading and debate to ESL learners or, for native speaking students and ESL students alike assist with analytical and college application essays. Additionally I'm very familiar with the IELTS/TOEFL exam structures for ESL students interested in studying in English speaking countries. My teaching methodology is student centered. I emphasize the need for students to participate in a language lesson so as to internalize concepts, language knowledge and fluency that I am always ready to explain patiently but encourage my students to actually implement during their valuable time. In China an issue I often had was students lacking confidence to speak and I've developed my tool set to get my students to surprise themselves and speak up more.Whether helping students to understand the conditions that led to current geopolitical situations they are just now being exposed to or teaching them how to bargain for better prices in Mandarin, I enjoy teaching and it is my hope that by coming to Varsity Tutors I can be a positive influence on more students' lives.

Currently I am a senior East Asia Studies major at ASU. During my sophomore year, I began studying Mandarin Chinese. Learning Chinese has become an integral part of my college experience, mainly because of my decision to join the ASU Chinese Language Flagship. Flagship is a competitive program designed to help members reach a "superior" level of language proficiency. As a Flagship member, I have participated in special Flagship classes, weekly tutoring, and a two-month summer study. For my Flagship capstone, I am preparing to study for a year abroad at Tianjin Normal University in China. In addition to Chinese, I am also passionate about English. I am an avid reader, and I especially enjoy books on politics and philosophy. In the future, I hope to travel and teach English in many different countries, in Asia and around the world. I also plan to attend graduate school, and eventually I would like to teach in a university. In my free time, I enjoy playing guitar and going to KTV with my friends. I am a very patient and relaxed person, and I believe that the best teacher is someone who learns alongside their students.
