I'm a current 10th grade math teacher with a passion for making sure all students feel capable of learning and succeeding. I recently graduated magna cum laude from Yale University with a B.S. in Economics and Psychology, and I am currently working towards a MSEd at Johns Hopkins University. I've been tutoring for nearly 10 years, in subjects ranging from ESL to econometrics, and I love any opportunity to help my students address their individual learning needs. I am a Doctoral student at the University of Washington in the department of Public Health Genetics. I study how people respond differently to medications because of their genes. As a result, I spend a lot of time thinking about Biology, Chemistry, Statistics, and Policy. I love to teach and work with the Pacific Science Center as a Communication Fellow.I attended Stanford University for both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. While there, I researched the immune system and how asthma and allergies develop. After college I managed a summer camp where I developed my love of working with people and the mountains. In my free time, I can be found hiking, backpacking, and snowboarding.

When I tutor, I am working to share my excitement for learning. Each student is different and deserves to have a personalized experience, and I take pride in identifying my students' learning styles and tailoring their sessions to fit their relationship with academics. My primary goal is to help my students achieve theirs.

I developed passion for the humanities at an early age and have since studied literature--everything from Chaucer to contemporary works--at Barnard College, Columbia University, and University of Oxford. I will receive my B.A. in May 2018. I have also worked in the Barnard Admissions office since my freshman year and was selected to be a Senior Interviewer for 2017-18; my experience in admissions has given me valuable insight into the college application process.I believe that anyone can be a great writer and enjoy helping students articulate thoughtful, sophisticated, and creative ideas on paper, whether for an analytic paper or college application essay. In tutoring sessions, I encourage students to reflect upon their reading experience and get ideas on paper. I also work with students to develop a comprehensive understanding of literary devices and writing mechanics, which can help with both standardized tests and school assignments.I am a patient and kind teacher but am also able to challenge students. In addition to studying, tutoring, and working in Admissions, I enjoy acting, singing, writing, and hiking and volunteer with Camp Kesem, a summer camp for children affected by a parent's cancer.

My education comes from a variety of schools: Albion College in Michigan (BA, English), Seattle Pacific University (MS, Information Systems Technology) in Washington, and University of Washington (Certificate of TESOL, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).My best education comes from working at Microsoft for 20 years. When you worked at Microsoft, you learned something new every day, be it technical, marketing, problem solving, or working with remarkably different people from all over the world.I have tutored adults and children in ELL (both as volunteer work and for pay). My favorite subject to tutor is writing and reading. I enjoy analyzing writing with a student to help them understand the author's purpose, and how they can present this information for better grades. I edit literature in addition to tutoring.I like to have fun teaching. I can be a bit goofy and like to laugh, but always get to the subject. I excel at asking students probing questions so they think through the problems the prose has presented.Hobbies? I love classical music, attend opera, adore figure skating. But I love Pilates the most: it makes you focus on the core of your body and encourages meditation while strengthening your muscles.

I took many AP classes in high school and took junior and senior level classes as a freshman at UW so I could graduate a year early. Mathematics has always been my favorite subject and I consider it an honor to have the opportunity to have studied it for my undergraduate degree.I believe that my success as a student studying mathematics stems from the passion I have for the subject. For the majority of people, math isn't the type of subject one can simply read a book on and understand how to solve the problems. It takes hard work over a long period of time, making mistakes and working with knowledgeable mentors to correct those mistakes.With the experience I've gained over years of doing advanced mathematics and using software applications (such as MATLAB and R) to help understand the concepts and solve the problems, I believe that I've set myself up to help other students of mathematics reach success.
