Hello, I'm Dennis. I study physics, math, and computer science. I have done research about cosmic ray acceleration at supernova shock fronts in the Princeton University Department of Astrophysics, simulating how the turbulent plasmas push protons and ions. I have also worked at the Norfolk State University Department of Engineering, designing, simulating, optimizing, and building light filters for wavelength-division optical-electronic multiplexers. Another field I study is the mathematics of quasicrystals and aperiodic tilings, such as the Penrose tiling of rhombuses.Outside of school I play the trombone and piano, and enjoy hiking and bicycling. I teach first aid skills and lead camping trips for freshman orientation.Learning can be hard alone, but friends can make it easy.

I am a student at Harvard. I study Physics and will be receiving my Bachelor of Science degree in the next couple of years. With a goal to continue on to a doctorate program in astrophysics. I was heavily involved in the peer tutoring program at my high school. Being a private school we were more like extra teachers than usual peer tutors. We helped with lesson plans, graded work, and tests. I even was involved in picking the new Algebra 2 Text Books for the school. As such I bring a unique look behind the curtain of high school education to my tutoring work. Through this program, I tutored Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Trigonometry for four years. I then went on to teach of all of the same at my high school's summer school program for three years. From there I attended and worked for City Year. City Year is a nonprofit sponsored by Americorps that provides extra support for students in low-income public schools around the country. In tutoring I believe in a fun and engaging real world look at subjects. I firmly believe that students who enjoy engaging with their subjects are much more likely to succeed. As a tutor, it is my job to help my students find subjects more engaging and more fun. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy Star Wars, cooking, and playing board games.

I am currently a Sales Engineer in Seattle, WA, and graduated from the University of Washington with a BS in Chemical Engineering and a BA in Biochemistry. I have worked for four years as a project engineer and project manager in the environmental engineering and specialty chemical industry. All my degrees were acquired through Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.Outside of academia, I spend my time caring for my large dogs, Cloud, a Great Pyrenees, and Yuffie, a Great Dane. We enjoy lots of play time and walks. These pups even have some of their food fashioned by yours truly! I also enjoy cooking for myself and my husband in addition to gardening. I come from a family of teachers, as my mother was an elementary school music teacher for 35 years and her sister was a preschool teacher. I did very well in school, including college and graduate school, I wanted to help others learn how to study effectively and remember information. I have developed a desire to help people achieve their educational goals and succeed in an academic setting. I first began substitute teaching in the 1990s and felt like I was really making an impact on students' motivation to learn. I completed my student teaching in Spanish in 2003 at East Hartford High School (Connecticut). Soon thereafter, I began working for a private company as a tutor for students with special needs, as well as those with English as their second language (in reading, writing, and math).At this point, I also took on a few private tutoring jobs, with someone of Japanese descent, as well as a couple students who were of Mexican descent. I worked at an autism spectrum school for about four years as a direct care staff person. I taught Spanish to two adolescents while there. I also experienced growth myself, as I had not realized how important socialization is to learning. As you may or may not know, socialization is a big barrier to many students on the spectrum.Finally, I have been substitute teaching in the Albany, NY area, which renewed my interest in being an instructor/facilitator/guide to struggling students. During this time, I had also tutored an international graduate college student (from Saudi Arabia) in Educational Psychology in preparation for her Early Childhood degree. I felt like this experience opened my eyes even more about cultural differences, and was a challenge that I was prepared to meet.

I have been tutoring on the side of a variety of jobs since the beginning of highschool and have three years of childcare experience outside of that. I am seeking a Bachelors of Science degree in Applied Mathematics with a pre-law track. I am passionate about tutoring math so I can help change the common negative associations many students make with it. I enjoy tutoring reading and writing because of the exponential help good writing and reading base can provide in preparing for future education along with communicating thoughts and feelings later in life. Having mastered a broad range of engineering subjects, both as a student and a tutor, I am well-equipped and eager to help students overcome their challenges and excel in mathematics.I have held my passion for mathematics since middle school and after graduating from the University of Florida with bachelors in both mechanical and aerospace engineering, my passion for tutoring was sparked when I worked as a TA for the thermal laboratory helping students run experiments, obtain data, and critiquing their work.Most of my expertise is in the harder math topics such as statics, dynamics, and controls, however I wish to enforce the fundamentals with my students to make sure they get the basics down before pursuing the more challenging subjects. Normally, I have had the most success in tutoring by locating the root of the misunderstanding and clearing up any misconceptions in the topics being taught. From working with matrices in linear algebra to differential equations, I have always loved learning new concepts that can be explained mathematically. One experience I had was working with a rocket design team where I learned about concepts way outside the class room like nozzle design and igniter design.
