I earned my Bachelor of Science in Zoology from The Ohio State University and my Master of Arts in Recreational Therapy from The University of Toledo. I am a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS). I have taught at the college level but most of my teaching experience comes from the Recreational Therapy world.I have taught teens with disabilities life skills classes, children with cancer how to understand their illness and treatment in an age appropriate way and stress management techniques. I have taught recreation therapy interns how to implement what they learned in school in real world settings as well as prepare for the CTRS exam.From a zoology perspective, I have hands on experience with tigers, lions and dolphins. I love using my zoology knowledge to help people learn and understand animals and I love using my recreational therapy knowledge to help people.Everyone learns differently, but regardless of your learning style, I find that if you make it fun, you will retain the information. I also feel that if you understand the why's of a subject you will gain a deeper understanding as well.In my spare time, I enjoy exploring the world in which we live, visiting national parks and monuments, volunteering for a variety of cancer organizations, ballroom dancing and spending time with my dogs.

I have experience volunteering and working for an after school care program at an elementary for a sum of about 6 years, I was an official employee for 2 years. I have worked with children ages 5-13 years old and have assisted them with the subjects of Math, Reading, English, and Spanish. Even as a nurse, I would love to work with children and help them. Children inspire me and knowing that I can help them with their struggles brings me joy. I also love teaching about my passion which is nursing.

I currently work as a residential advisor at an international school in Boston, and I really enjoy living and working with ESL students from around the world. I absolutely love to teach, and I love to learn, but I can assure you, it wasn't always this way!I struggled a great deal academically throughout my middle and high school years. Friends, clothes, dating...pretty much everything came before academics. It wasn't until college, when I was able to take classes I really had an interest in, that I finally began to excel. Now, to be clear, I didn't just suddenly wake up "smart" one day (although that would've been nice). The reason I was doing so well was because, in the past, if I found a subject boring, or even slightly challenging, I didn't care about it. I tuned my teacher out, and made zero effort.Despite the challenges of school and life in general, I was determine to move forward and be successful. After graduating high school, on my own dime, I went to a local community college and took my "basics". Eventually, I transferred to the University of Houston where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, followed by a Masters degree in Social Work. Mission "Prove my Parents Wrong": Accomplished.After graduating, I became a licensed therapist, and worked with children and families for about 10 years before making the decision transition to teaching. I went back to school to earn my teaching certification, and started teaching, and I love it!I am currently certified to teach every grade level, and have additional certifications in ESL, GT, and Special Education (and of course, being a teacher in Texas, I am a STAAR expert). I have worked extensively with students of all ages, with a variety of needs and goals. Now, I'm certainly not knocking those individuals that seem to just "get it" (no matter what the subject)...sigh...but that was definitely not me! I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. My goal in helping students is to help them understand the processes behind math/science concepts and techniques, rather than just aid in finding an answer. After all, mathematics is the numerical explanation of the universe (and science can be seen as applied math), and giving life and meaning to abstract concepts will do more than just earn a student a better grade. It will help them develop problem-solving skills they will need throughout their academic careers. This is why I find math (and other engineering-related fields such as physics and programming) so enjoyable; all of these subjects boil down to developing creative problem-solving skills. Even if a student isn't pursuing a STEM-related field, they can utilize these skills and apply them to other areas.Outside of my academics, I enjoy rocketry, playing the French horn, listening to classical music, and building/fixing computers, namely.

Having been a serious student of music in the past, I of course enjoy classical music; my favorites these days are the Baroque masters.I have been teaching English courses online for several years now, and it's been an excellent job for me as a parent since the hours are so flexible. Now that my child is grown, I'm interested in spreading my wings a bit and meeting students face to face as a tutor.My favorite subjects to teach are English Composition, Rhetoric, and research essays. I also am a grammar nerd and love to help students build their skills in this area.I love animals of all kinds and have a dog and a cat, who don't really get along with each other! I spend too much time breaking up their little spats, I think. But I wouldn't give them up, mostly because they're so entertaining.I also enjoy baking and cooking ethnic foods, and since I live near the Mississippi River I take advantage of our running paths on a regular basis. I love to be outside in the fresh air.
