Hello, I'm Dennis. I study physics, math, and computer science. I have done research about cosmic ray acceleration at supernova shock fronts in the Princeton University Department of Astrophysics, simulating how the turbulent plasmas push protons and ions. I have also worked at the Norfolk State University Department of Engineering, designing, simulating, optimizing, and building light filters for wavelength-division optical-electronic multiplexers. Another field I study is the mathematics of quasicrystals and aperiodic tilings, such as the Penrose tiling of rhombuses.Outside of school I play the trombone and piano, and enjoy hiking and bicycling. I teach first aid skills and lead camping trips for freshman orientation.Learning can be hard alone, but friends can make it easy.

I am in my fourth year as a math education and math double major at Winona State University in Winona, MN. I have worked for about four years as a University math tutor and have tutored classes ranging from college Algebra to introductory real analysis. I also have a lot of experience working with middle and high school age students through my field experiences. Why math is strongest subject, I tutor some statistics and computer science (Python is my favorite language) courses. Most importantly, I love learning and teaching others about math!My favorite subject to tutor is Calculus, in particular Calculus 1, because I love the depth of intuition one can achieve by thinking about topics visually. I classify my teaching/tutoring style as Experimentalist, in the sense of John Dewey, because I believe that learning is best done through hands-on experience. I recognize that students' learning styles vary drastically, so I love implementing a number of educational techniques, be they aural, visual, or kinesthetic, to maximize student engagement with content. My extra-academic interests include learning about mathematics recreationally, watching movies and TV shows, and playing video games.

I believe that the best in people is brought about only when an opportunity for learning opens new doors, inspires new adventures and let's in new possibilities. Without these new vistas can never be reached, doors will remain closed and people will shun new possibilities. Therefore, in striving to be the best you can be, you can open yourself up to the possibility of who you will be. Belief in oneself inspires the passion to consider the self as a means of your own transformation. Therefore, when striving to follow my passion for mathematics, the arts or the sciences, I use a multifaceted approach to learning. Whether more traditional or more progressive, I can lecture and lead or simply allow for your learning to unfold via engaging conversation with the material. When you can bring your enthusiasm, interest and love of the subject material, then teaching you how to hone these skills into a career or passion project you may be working on will be a door wide open. Will you open it?

I believe all students can learn, it just takes the teacher and tutor to find how that student can best understand the content given to them. That's my goal with working through Varsity Tutors, to find that place of understanding with students to help them connect with the content they're learning.

I am a third year Mathematics Major in The University Of Texas at Austin. I ran a free prep class for the AP Calculus AB and the AP Calculus BC test in my public library in New Jersey. I ran the class for two years and enjoyed teaching my students the essentials needed for these two tests. As the head teacher I had a lot of responsibilities such as making mock tests, making sure every student understood all the content, Organizing each class day every week, and getting assistant teachers to help me out for free. I know that I am a good teacher because every student I ever taught either received a 4 or a 5 on either test.

I truly love both mathematics and physics. I studied both of them in college and found the subjects to be engaging and useful. During high school and college, I gained a lot of experience tutoring informally and formally in a range of math subjects and physics topics. Even as a major of physics in college, I would sometimes end up tutoring other physics majors in some Junior level physics classes if I had taken the class before. In my free time, I like to hang out with friends, read (mostly sci-fi and fiction), play video games, and study new topics in physics and math. I am currently taking a class at the University of Washington, Bothell for fun, it's called 'Abstract Algebra'. I fell in love with math early when I realized it was just one idea that was built on another. I then took physics in my senior year of college and fell in love with that as well.In my opinion, physics is so fascinating because of it's predictable nature. It let's physicists predict the existence of stellar objects--like the prediction of black holes by Einstein in the early 1900s-- predict where our spaceship will land if we fire the rocket at this or that angle, or predict if and how it is possible to produce clean, near limitless energy in the form of cold fusion. It also, by its nature, seeks to explain the different phenomena and mysteries that the world contains. Quantum physics explained why the periodic table of elements was periodic, one of the biggest mysteries for chemists since its development.
