Aloha. I am from Honolulu, Hawai'i and I've recently moved to Albany, New York to study speech-language pathology. My undergraduate degree in early and elementary education has prepared me for one-to-one tutoring with children from ages 3-12 and I have a deep passion in education and child development. I have an extensive amount of experience working with children of all ages and I particularly enjoy grades 2-5. A part of my passion for education deals with my love for children and I plan to be a pediatric speech therapist upon receiving my Master's degree in May 2019. I enjoy being active and outdoors for the most part but I also believe that down time and personal wellness is very important!

I am a Graduate Student completing my MS in Secondary Education for English at SUNY at Albany. In May, I will have my NYS Teaching Certification. I got my BA in English at the same university, where I also double minored in Creative Writing and Film Studies. I've taught in middle and high school classrooms, and I can't wait to continue teaching here.I've learned so much about the importance of collaboration and student agency in learning. I also believe in the importance of meeting the specific needs and honoring the unique interests of each student. Every person I meet is capable of accomplishing more than they know. My job is just to help them see that for themselves through time and practice. I tutor English and Literature, and I love bringing film, television, and creativity into the classroom! I firmly believe that English and Literature are incredibly important skill sets to hone and develop since we use these skills to communicate effectively through art, academia, and even in everyday life.In my spare time, I love reading, hiking with friends, time with my dog, running, trying new foods, watching cozy Twitch streams, and playing video games.

Conversational German Tutor • +17 Subjects

I am very passionate about the German language and culture and I am eager to ignite this passion in others. I began studying German at age 12 in middle school and went on to complete a BA degree at the State University of New York at Oswego. I subsequently completed a Masters degree through Middlebury College and was able to study in Berlin, Germany during this time. I believe in taking an academic as well as cultural approach to language learning, so that the language can truly "come alive" in the mind of the student.

I am a former medical student with two years of experience under my belt and a Bachelor's in Biology. I am currently working for a tech giant. I have years of tutoring STEM subjects and being a mentor for undergraduate students in Upstate New York. The world of science and how the human body interacts with its surroundings fascinates me! Therefore, it is no surprise I enjoy tutoring Anatomy and Microbiology up to the college level. I also enjoy teaching high school and lower level sciences . My method is simple, we learn together and use tools that best work for you (visual or auditory). I'll try to spark an interest in your learning capabilities and facilitate every step of the way. The goal is to make you an independent learner.

Art Tutor • +8 Subjects

I am a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (Bachelor of Arts degree in, Linguistics) which I attended on a National Merit Scholarship, and Long Island University (Master's degree in Library Science). Over the years, I have studied French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, with varying degrees of success. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about handwriting, which is the subject I tutor most often. My passion for handwriting comes from the fact that I had great difficulties with this skill throughout my youth and young adulthood. My handwriting was illegible, painful, and extremely slow further, I could not even read cursive because of a variety of neurological difficulties which were later diagnosed as including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, and autism spectrum issues.During graduate school, I resolved to address my handwriting issues, which I did by independently researching the history and science of handwriting. I learned why so many people (with and without disabilities) have huge difficulties with conventional handwriting instruction, and developed competency as a calligrapher and as a user and teacher of better, simpler handwriting: employing techniques drawn from the italic method of handwriting, which was the method used in the earliest published handwriting textbooks.Ever since then, for the past several decades I have been teaching students of all ages and abilities how to improve their handwriting. Usually, I teach individually and in small groups; I have also taught large groups. (My largest class was a group of 250 MDs at a hospital which had me present a handwriting class at their annual meeting instead of the usual keynote speech.)The people to whom I teach handwriting include doctors, occupational therapists, students at the kindergarten through university levels (including special education students), and teachers and administrators at the elementary through university levels (including special education teachers and administrators).I am also the author of the book READ CURSIVE FAST, which teaches people to read cursive handwriting even if they do not write in cursive.Additionally. I tutor basic math and English (including English as a Second Language), as well as helping students of the various languages which I know.In my spare time, I enjoy reading science fiction and informative nonfiction, as well as a variety of crafts including calligraphy and loom knitting.

After many years in the computer industry, I recently decided to enrich my life by returning to one of the favorite things Ive enjoyed doing in my life teaching. I completed my undergraduate studies at Franklin and Marshall College. Upon obtaining my graduate degree (M.A.) in mathematics from Wesleyan University, I spent three years teaching math at a private high school in Stamford, CT before going to work in the private sector for IBM. Eventually I left IBM and started my own company in the computer leasing industry. Even though throughout my career I have been in mostly sales positions, I found that my teaching background proved invaluable when explaining to my clients how new technologies could benefit their organizations.I think my real world experience and my love of math, can bring a unique perspective to a student who, for whatever reason, is looking to improve his or her math skills. Whether you are struggling to grasp new concepts or looking to deepen your understanding of what you are being taught, I can help you. My approach to making math understandable is to explain many different examples to help you build confidence in your abilities and use real life applications wherever possible to keep it interesting. When Im not working I enjoy cycling, downhill and x-c skiing, hiking, and skating.

10th Grade Writing Tutor • +52 Subjects

I have always enjoyed working with students in various capacities. Currently, I am a teaching assistant at the University at Albany and before that, I worked with younger children struggling in math and science. I enjoy connecting with students to help find a way for them to not only understand the material, but to be able to use that material and apply it to their learning for years to come. It is important to me that each student makes academic goals and that I help achieve those goals so that every student feels successful and well equipped to handle material on their own. I think that it is crucial that students also learn what resources they have available to them when a tutor or teacher is not available, and how to employ those resources. I think it is vital that I help students figure out the best way for them to learn. Every individual is different and I see it as my role to teach study skills that can be accessed during the entirety of a students academic career.
