I graduated from Hood College with my B.A. in Psychology. I then went on and completed my Master's in Mental Health Counseling from The Johns Hopkins University School of Education. I am currently a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor in the state of Maryland. I work for a non-profit organization for a program that provides services to children in Montgomery County public schools, and work in a middle school in Rockville providing individual and group therapy to the students and their families. My current role as a therapist in the school, often encompasses several different aspects, not just therapy sessions. I run groups, attend IEP meetings, and often help with academic clubs after school run by our program. I have always enjoyed working with children and adolescents of all ages. I also have experience working with children who are diagnosed with ADHD. My experience with tutoring ranges from helping out the neighborhood children, to working after school 1:1 with a group of students who need strict and extra support for their classes. I have always had a passion for reading and literature, and have enjoyed writing essays. My strengths include Psychology and Counseling, and English and writing. I believe my background in professional counseling will aide in my abilities to help tutor by providing a personal and individualized approach to helping your child learn and understand the material, while keeping the session enjoyable. I love my job and working with the students and families in the school, but also have a great deal of interests outside of my work. In my spare time I enjoy any form of exercise, and will find any excuse to get outside when the weather is nice! My interests range from going to see live music, to curling up with a movie or good book! I love all animals, and will often help out my mother with her dog training business, as well.

I am currently pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. As a tutor, I find it extremely rewarding when I am able to break down complex and intricate concepts and truly help students understand the foundational components of their subject areas. Specifically, I love helping students with SAT test prep, math, and essay writing, as I believe I have mastered the college admissions process, having gone through it not too long ago myself. As a current student, I understand the standards many teenagers are held to and the stress many of them are faced with, and thus would like to impart my knowledge and experience! I also enjoy teaching elementary and middle school students essential skills that they will undoubtedly build upon as they progress into secondary and post-secondary education.

I have several years of experience working with young children and adult learners with special needs in Westchester County New York as an assistant teacher. I received a Bachelor of Arts in African Studies with a minor in history from Hofstra University. I received a Masters of Business Administration with a focus in Operations Management from Colorado Technical University. Since graduation, I have worked with the DC Teaching Fellows program as a lead teacher, supporting students with learning disabilities within the DC public school system. My approach to teaching and tutoring students is one that is done with inquiry, understanding and adaptation. I like to assess my students to see what they know, what they want to know and where they need assistance. Then create a plan to ensure that I can best fit their academic needs.

I have tutored students in various academic subjects and in test prep since attending Haverford College. I have also gained experience working with students as a middle school teacher and as a mentor in an elementary school reading program. After teaching at the Washington Middle School for Girls in DC, I earned an Ed.M in Education Policy and Management at The Harvard Graduate School of Education and currently work as a project manager in education assessment. While I am no longer in a classroom during the day, I still enjoy helping students reach their maximum academic potential. As a tutor, I first focus on understanding a student's academic needs and then work with the student to ensure that he or she grasps an understanding of the particular subject. I stay patient and encouraging while using different examples to explain a concept and continuously check for understanding by asking the student questions.

I have a degree from James Madison University where I double majored in math and physics and minored in business. I have interned for NASA, managed a Mathnasium, and I am currently a data analyst for Parsons Corporation.I have tutored privately, for a nonprofit, for tutoring centers at James Madison University, or for Mathnasium since 2009. I specialize in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus 1. I feel comfortable working with students of all ages and aptitudes. I have experience working with students with special needs, brain injuries, and ADHD.I am passionate about teaching math because each student thinks and learns differently. I always try to explain math in a way that makes sense to the student I'm working with. If a student is frustrated, that just means I need to find a different way to explain the same concept. I want my students to feel comfortable, encouraged, and accomplished. When I teach I use leading questions to make sure the student is engaged. Please let me know if you have any questions about my experience or methods.

Since graduation, I have worked as a licensed teacher in the states of Delaware and Virginia. I have taught a variety of subjects, such as English Literature, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Chemistry, Earth Science, Biology, American History, Career/Technical Education courses, and GED test preparation classes. Throughout my career, I have always worked very hard to motivate my students to do their best academically.Currently, I am an adjunct faculty member at Montgomery College. I continue to tutor/teach both younger and older students. Additionally, while working for Montgomery College, I developed curriculum at a post-secondary level. While I tutor/teach a broad range of subjects in many of the core subject areas, I am most passionate about Algebra I/II and American History. For me, it is very rewarding and enjoyable to work with students and guide them to academic success. Undoubtedly, I enjoy learning and working through word problems and providing detailed information about important dates, facts, and figures. I know that my drive for success and enthusiasm will be contagious for any student that I work with on a continuous basis.

My name is Monica, and I recently graduated from University of California – Berkeley with a B.A. in public health. I have tutored a wide range of elementary to high school students in several subjects, and so I understand every student has their own style of learning. As a tutor, I will do my best to provide a supporting environment and create lesson plans that will assist with the students understanding of the materials. More importantly, I will encourage students to voice their ideas and ask questions to ensure that they will understand every step of the way.

I come from a special education background, so often times I find myself looking for the strengths in students and using those strengths to help them improve upon the areas they are not so confident in. For example, it can be as simple as providing positive feedback in addition to areas that they need to improve in. If you put yourself in the shoes of the student , it could be very frustrating for them to only hear about things that they did wrong and difficult to take feedback constructively. I feel that as a teacher/tutor it is my job to make sure that they are able to utilize my feedback to help them grow and develop as well as learn from their mistakes. If it is one thing we can all learn that is to not continue to make the same mistakes.I also believe in the philosophy that learning should be fun and students should "want" to learn rather than "have" to. By understanding the applicability of what we learn to our personal/professional lives we can better relate and retain it. Not everything we learn may be interesting or as relevant to our daily lives. However, if we can understand the impact it has in modern day world, it makes it that much easier to learn it.
