I am a graduate from Columbia University with a dual degree in Physics and Mechanical Engineering.I first began tutoring with a non-profit organization, WhizKids, where tutors were paired with elementary aged children from lower-income neighborhoods to help with homework. Since then, I was a tutor at my first college, where I tutored groups of college-aged students in math and physics. Since I began tutoring, I've loved the connections I was able to make with students, as well as the joy of watching each student become more confident and proud of themselves as they work through the subjects they initially had struggled with. I also love challenging myself in determining ways I can modify my teaching and tutoring methods to the many unique and various learning styles I encounter with each student. Since my major has been mostly math-based, I love teaching calculus 1 and 2 as well as Physics the most. I began tutoring as a volunteer assignment in high school, later being promoted to an advisory block teacher my senior year. While a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I continued to tutor other students, mainly in physics and mathematics. Eventually, this lead me to a position as a TA and lab technician in Phys 406: Physics of Music Lab. In total, I have tutored for about 8 years.My favorite facet of tutoring is exploring the different ways in which students learn a topic. An explanation that resonates with 90% of students, may not clarify things for the other 10%. Part of being a good tutor requires me to identify many alternate routes to explanation, should the more common ones not work well. Both my college and life experience has led me to work with people of various ages in a plethora of settings, but a favorite focus has been in teaching children. I have done a lot of outreach with my physics department with K-12 kids, including designing experiments and walking kids through demonstrations, but I've also worked with children in small groups in a more casual environment.Despite the focus on children, I have also worked with peers in math and physics and enjoy employing many different methods of learning, such as 3D models, folding paper, Mathematica graphs and simulations, and physician demonstrations.My favorite subject to teach is literature, with physics and mathematics close seconds.
