I believe that everyone can learn. While sometimes education takes a one size-fits-all approach, and everyone is expected to learn the same thing at the same time, using the same methods, in reality that doesn't always work. I have witnessed first hand how frustration can stop a student in his or he...

I am a graduate of Hunter College with a Masters of Science in Education, with a focus on Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Students with Disabilities. I am certified as a New York State teacher, working with the New York City Department of Education. My philosophy on teaching is quite simple: each student learns in their own way and it is the responsibility of a teacher/tutor to determine how a student learns, determine their needs and create lessons that the student will feel successful in completing while fostering their unique learning styles. When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family, learning new things, taking my dog for long walks and curling up on the porch with a good book or the latest "it" book.

I am a law student at Fordham University studying international business transactions with a focus on the emerging markets in Asia and Africa. I also work part-time as a paralegal at a small Chinese immigration law firm. I graduated in 2010 from Hamilton College with a B.A. in Chinese and Comparative Literature. I spent the last year in Chengdu, China on a Fulbright Grant studying the emergence of legal aid as a resource to female migrant workers.I work with students of all ages and experience levels. I specialize in humanities and Chinese language instruction. Because I am currently a student myself, I can truly empathize with students' concerns and frustrations. My passion for the subjects I tutor enables me to enthusiastically engage with students, help them discover their strengths, and find solutions to their weaknesses. I love helping students achieve their potential and explore their academic interests.I love traveling, yoga, cross country running, eating interesting food (that others prepare, unfortunately, cooking isn't a strength), and spending time with my friends.

I believe learning can (and should) be fun. When students enjoy learning, they will be more dedicated and learn more effectively. With that said, a teacher's job is to find the best way to make learning enjoyable while still presenting a challenge for the student.I really enjoy working one-on-one with students. I get to know them on a deeper level, which helps build rapport and makes learning more enjoyable. It also allows me to devote more individualized attention to that student, assessing their needs and ensuring progress.I am an experienced tutor, and I've helped a lot of students succeed in their academics. I have a degree in English and Philosophy from the University of Vermont, and I'm also a certified ESL teacher. Just recently I returned from China, where I was working as both the head of the English department and as a private tutor. I'm also currently working with elementary students who qualify for supplementary education services through the government.

My philosophy has always been to uplift and motivate my students. I am a firm believer in building positive relationships, that matter. Each day I aim to offer a safe and effective learning environment that inspires my students. My classroom was always a place for students to build confidence and reach their full potential.I believe it will be very difficult for any teaching or learning to take place in a classroom, if the teacher is not a reflective educator. Reflection in education is so important because it drives your instruction and helps promote positive relationships with your students."If you can change a classroom, you can change a community, and if you change enoughcommunities you can change theworld."-Erin Gruell

I have loved learning for as long as I can remember and truly want every person to experience the same kind of joy and excitement at expanding his or her horizons and tackling new problems that I have. Every student should have the opportunity to feel both successful and challenged, recognizing that an integral part of success is struggle. It is so important to develop and value grit; struggling with a difficult concept or a complex problem is a beneficial process that leads to true learning. Because of this belief, I am enthusiastic about new approaches to mathematics in K-12 education, in particular. In place of rote memorization, Common Core emphasizes creative approaches to problem solving to develop mental math abilities through mathematical thinking and number sense. My strong liberal arts background has also given me great appreciation for and mastery of critical thinking, textual analysis, and articulate writing across subject areas. As a straight-A student my entire life, I hold myself and my students to a very high standard. I care greatly about the details and hold firm that quality always matters. That said, I wholeheartedly believe that learning is a process and perfection does not come without struggle and persistence. Long-term benefit often stems from short-term "failures," so no student should ever feel either discouraged by difficulties or satisfied by ease. As a classroom teacher who works with 27 students daily, I also appreciate that each student is unique, learning through and becoming motivated by different approaches. I love getting to know each of my students to figure out how to give him or her the best learning experience possible, tailored directly to his or her needs. Particularly in the elementary years, emphasis must be placed on a strong foundation of understanding and of learning habits for greater success in the more rigid and demanding high school and college years.I am currently an elementary school teacher, although I have worked with students from early childhood through college. In the past couple of years (including summer), I have taught kindergarten and first, third, and fourth grade. I am completing a Master's degree in education at Fordham as part of my certification in grades 1-6 and have a 4.0 GPA. As an undergraduate, I attended Wellesley College and was cross-registered at MIT. I majored in Jewish studies and minored in history, although I took courses in everything from microeconomics to psychology, and I graduated with a 3.92 GPA. At Wellesley, I worked as a statistics teaching assistant and volunteered as a kindergarten literacy tutor, an early childhood center student teacher, and a college tour guide. I worked as a kindergarten and afterschool teacher at a prestigious private school in Boston after graduation, before returning to school to complete a Master's in Near Eastern and Judaic studies at Brandeis University with a 3.96 GPA. I hope to continue school after completing this second Master's degree because I love education as both a teacher and a student!

I have always been drawn to teaching, and figuring out how to individualize lessons in order to teach all students.I started my journey into the world of German my freshman year of high school in Meridian Idaho. Through that program, I was able to go to Germany for 3 weeks through GAPP (German American Partnership Program). There I was matched with a student my age and stayed with her family. A few months later, she came and stayed at my house. We exchanged culture and truly became sisters. She and her parents were even able to travel to Idaho to be at my wedding.I have studied abroad twice, for the 2006-07 school year through my undergraduate program at Boise State University and for the 2009-10 school year through the University of Massachusetts Amherst, developing an advanced proficiency in the German language and culture. I bring my first hand experiences and passion into the classroom every day, in order to connect the language to a larger world view for my students. I have experience planning lessons targeted toward individual learning styles, including the incorporation of technology in the classroom.During the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years, as part of my graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I gained experience teaching German at the college level by teaching one section of German 110 during each fall semester and German 120 each spring semester. I created supplemental material in order to integrate technology into the classroom. During the summer semester in 2012 I was able to build on my knowledge of the university Blackboard and Moodle systems and I taught one section of an intensive 3-week German 110 online course. From 2012-2014, I was the sole German teacher at Beverly High School in Beverly, MA. I was responsible for year-long sections of first through fifth year German. I worked closely with the local chapter of AATG (American Association of Teachers of German) and collaborated with local colleagues through programs sponsored by the Goethe Institute in Boston. After moving to Washington, I taught as a Humanities Teacher from 2014-2016 at a private one-on-one school, tailoring lessons to individual students. I had English students ranging from Kindergarten early reading, high school German, middle school ELL social studies, and high school literature. I really love working with the younger students learning to read and write English, and that moment when you can really see their minds making connections. I remember the sparkle in a second grader's eye when he read an entire book by himself for the first time, and told me that he was proud. My professional experience paired with my passion for education, culture, and advancing the use of technology in the classroom align with tutoring online. My experience reflects my strong work ethic and passion for teaching and promoting the German language and culture, as well as helping younger students break through whatever may be holding them back in the building blocks of reading and writing. Teaching high school literature allowed me to go back to the poems and novels that I read in my high school English classes. I was able to create units and shape lessons based on my new understanding of the works, reading them as an adult.I currently serve as the President of the Washington Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German.

I am a graduate of Rutgers University, double-majoring in History and Political Science and minoring in Art History. As an undergraduate student at Rutgers, I completed Education courses and also had the privilege of conducting field research at local elementary schools for the Early Childhood Literacy Development program. After college, I received my Juris Doctor from Seton Hall Univ. School of Law and have studied law in Italy at the Universities of Milan, Parma and Genova-Nervi. Shortly after graduating from law school and becoming a practicing attorney, I started my own solo practice. I enjoy teaching History, Law and Government, and the Tagalog(Filipino) language. Having a solo practice allows me to have a flexible schedule and teach on my free time, which not only is my true passion but it also allows me to give back to the community and interact with people.
