One of my most profound joys comes from guiding learners in the process of accelerating growth, closing academic gaps, and believing in themselves. Ensuring their future success is more than a passion for me: It is my mission.I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education from West Chester University and a Master of Arts in Administration, Supervision, Curriculum Planning, and Instruction from Georgian Court University. Throughout my teaching career, I have also engaged in numerous training and research opportunities. Most recently, I took a course entitled "Penn Literacy Network 1" as well as several additional educational workshops from the University of Pennsylvania. My philosophy of teaching is that educators must ensure each learner is reaching his/her full potential by attending to "the whole child". In addition to providing excellent academic instruction, teachers must also address the social and emotional needs of students and create exciting learning environments where they are eager to learn and participate. Instructionally, I believe in the use practices that are research-based and rooted in Universal Design. This includes multi-sensory, hands-on, mnemonic, and metacognitive approaches that address the needs of individuals of various learning styles and ability levels. It is also my strong belief that educators must provide well-planned, explicit instruction as well as highly engaging co-constructive learning opportunities that build critical thinking skills, encourage lifelong learning, and pave the way for future success. I work tirelessly to ensure that I uphold all of these values while maintaining a high spirited, engaging, supportive, and motivating learning environment. In reporting on my teaching performance, principals have used descriptors such as: "Mrs. Berodyn takes her students on a journey of excitement and exploration.", "The success rate of her students in high.", and "She is a model for teachers to emulate."My prior experience includes 28 wonderful years as a resource room teacher in New Jersey. I taught in K-5 whole group, inclusionary classrooms as well as in small group, individualized settings for learning disabled students. My passion and dedication was recognized there with a "Teacher of the Year Award" and a listing in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. After moving to Pennsylvania, I also had the great pleasure of teaching for 5 years as a Basic Skills Instructional Aide, providing targeted tutoring to individuals and small groups of kindergarten through 6th grade students. In both career experiences, the goal of my instruction was to inspire a love of learning, increase student skills, and close achievement gaps in reading, writing, spelling and math.Currently, I tutor in reading, writing, spelling, and math for students in kindergarten through 4th grade as well as adult literacy. Although I truly enjoy teaching all of these subject areas, I am most passionate about reading. Because it is most critical to the future success of my students, I have engaged in extensive literacy research and received training in a number of multi-sensory and specialized reading program (such as Wilson, Lindamood-Bell, Preventing Academic Failure, SRA Reading Mastery, Stevenson, Reading Recovery, and Corrective Reading). I take great pride and joy in knowing that I have helped hundreds of students overcome significant reading difficulties. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, hiking, cooking, listening to music, playing guitar, and taking pictures!

I graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 2010 with a BA in French Language and Literature and a minor in Russian language and literature. About a year after I graduated, I was accepted to a program, run by the French government, to teach English in France. I spent a year in the eastern town of Belfort helping French students ages 15 - 20 with their English grammar and pronunciation. While there, I took advantage of the school holidays and traveled to several different European countries. After my contract finished, I spent two months traveling through Spain. My favorite subjects to tutor are literature based, as that is where my interests lie. I enjoy discussing books with my students and helping them realize the subtle nuances of the author's language. I also enjoy helping my students with their own writing, helping them find their unique style. For test prep, I enjoy the English, Reading and Writing portions and try to help my students do the same. I believe the more a student enjoys something the easier it will be for he or she to progress.

I currently serve as an AmeriCorps member with City Year Seattle King/County as a tutor and mentor at Concord International Elementary. I graduated from Claremont McKenna College in 2014 with a Bachelor’s of Art in Political Science and Spanish. I have three years of professional experience tutoring elementary aged students in Math and English Language Arts. As the eldest of four in my family, I have 15 years of experience interacting with young children. In college I participated in many peer-tutoring sessions where friends and I studied together and learned from each other. In my spare time I read voraciously. I recently finished “If Beale Street Could Talk” by James Baldwin and prior to that I read “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” by Milan Kundera. I also enjoy exercising, knitting and spending quality time with my Netflix account. This July I will be starting my second year with City Year as a Team Leader. Afterwards I plan to commit to serving as a Peace Corps volunteer focusing on Youth in Development. I still have not decided in what location, but I have narrowed it down to four options.

In December 2014, I earned a Bachelor's of Science in Family Studies and Human Development from the University of Arizona. I am currently applying to graduate school in the hopes of earning a Master's of Fine Arts in Fiction.I have worked as a tutor for three years. My experience includes being an Academic Skills Tutor at the Think Tank at the University of Arizona and being a Writer's Lab & Content Tutor at the Strategic Alternative Learning Techniques Center at the University of Arizona.I tutor psychology, sociology, English, history, geography, and religious studies. My favorite subject to tutor is psychology or English. I favor psychology because it is remarkably easy for the student to make a connection between the material and their own personal lives. As for English, that is my person favorite subject in school so I enjoy fostering understanding and love for it in other students. My teaching philosophy is that every student is different. I am not the type of tutor to have my students write note cards and then be quizzed on them day after day. I like the challenge of creating innovative and creative methods to teach my students the information they are required to know. It's one of my favorite parts of tutoring.Outside of academia, I love to read and write. I'm a complete bibliophile and also an author myself. My first book came out last month and I am not hoping to be admitted to a graduate program to earn my MFA in fiction. I also love yoga. It's the thing I look forward to in order to slow my world down just a little bit.I love tutoring. It is such an honor to be part of a student's "Aha!" moment. I look forward to being part of yours.
