A little bit about me:In May 2015, I graduated summa cum laude from the Dominican University of California, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies/Teacher Preparation, a minor in mathematics and Honors. While at Dominican, I had ample classroom and one-on-one experience with students. I worked as an assistant teacher in six different elementary school classrooms (ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade) throughout Marin County. In addition, I worked as one of the mathematics, statistics and liberal studies tutors at Dominican's Teaching Learning Center (TLC). In my one-on-one with undergraduates, I helped students who initially struggled with concepts to ultimately master the material. Further, I helped develop students' study, test-taking, organization, and problem-solving skills. My experience also includes tutoring high school students (algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry and functions) privately.In the fall of 2015 I lived in Portland where I was a tutor for elementary through college levels with Cornerstone Learning. From February 2016 to present, I have been a tutor with Tutor Corps in San Francisco. I have had experience tutoring fifteen students through Tutor Corps from kindergarten up to high school in multiple levels of mathematics as well as reading, writing and organizational skills.I also have a passion in working with students who struggle with learning differences. At the age of eight, I was diagnosed with ADD and throughout my years in education, I worked hard to gain the skills and strategies that would help me succeed and progress despite my learning differences. One of my most gratifying teaching experiences was tutoring a first grader who struggled with ADHD. He had been held back for two years in a row, but after a semester of working one-on-one with him using visuals and skills/strategies that worked best for him, this student began acing all of his tests and moved onto second grade at the end of the semester.In addition to teaching math, I also enjoy teaching dance and choreographing. I am currently a company dancer with Peter & Co and perform/tour with the company. I am also a guest dancer for several other Bay Area dance companies and am a freelance choreographer. Furthermore, I am a faculty member of Marin Dance Theatre and Presidio Dance Theatre where I teach contemporary, ballet and private lessons (to students from elementary to high school) and choreograph contemporary works for the pre-professional division.

My first job out of college was as a tutor and mentor in a high school in Chicago. I worked with 9th graders, mainly in Algebra, and I fell in love with both teaching math and working with students one-on-one.I studied Social Policy, with a focus on Education Policy, as well as Economics and Spanish as an undergraduate at Northwestern University, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude. My undergraduate experience solidified my decision to pursue a career working with young people. I am now a graduate student in Social Work at UC Berkeley where I work with foster youth in a case management and counseling role.I have continued to tutor several students in elementary school math, Algebra, study skills, and writing over the last two years. I have experience with Computer Science from a student, professional, and teaching perspective. I understand what it feels like when you are completely stuck on a problem or concept, so when teaching I use scaffolding to break concepts down into manageable parts. I have experience teaching Computer Science to a classroom of 20 high school students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. This December, I will finish a MA at San Francisco State University in English composition, focusing in-depth on all types of writing and how to teach writing to K-12 and university students and business professionals. As a graduate student, I taught a university-level writing-intensive course to freshmen, the type of composition writing course that the AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition exams prepare high school students to study for and get college credit with a high score on the AP exam.I firmly believe that my passion and expertise in writing, literature, and history will help students reach their potential and improve their knowledge, skills, and their passion even if they are not yet engaged with the humanities and social sciences. Knowing many teachers and professors, I also firmly believe that students fall into the cracks of education frequently because of ill-prepared teachers, an overworked system that demands too much time from them without adequate pay and respect, and because most graduate schools of education do not adequately train teachers with evidence-based scholarship and give them the tools they need to succeed. I firmly believe that I and Varsity Tutors can fill this gap in education and in a student's learning by supplementing what schools cannot provide though teachers and professors are very passionate and heartfelt and genuinely care about their students. Born and raised (and currently based!) in Northern Virginia, I have a penchant for American history in addition to the physical sciences and mathematics. I'm a voracious audio-book listener, and often drift to sleep with the words and stories of past philosophers, mathematicians, and world leaders. I am an undergraduate at Tulane University in New Orleans, but will be spending next year abroad at the London School of Economics. I was born here in San Francisco, and I have lived in this amazing city ever since.
