Hi, my name is Alyssa and I am a math/reading/writing and organizational skills tutor for students from kindergarten to college. A little bit about me:In May 2015, I graduated summa cum laude from the Dominican University of California, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies/Teacher Preparation, a minor in mathematics and Honors. While at Dominican, I had ample classroom and one-on-one experience with students. I worked as an assistant teacher in six different elementary school classrooms (ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade) throughout Marin County. In addition, I worked as one of the mathematics, statistics and liberal studies tutors at Dominican's Teaching Learning Center (TLC). In my one-on-one with undergraduates, I helped students who initially struggled with concepts to ultimately master the material. Further, I helped develop students' study, test-taking, organization, and problem-solving skills. My experience also includes tutoring high school students (algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry and functions) privately. In the fall of 2015 I lived in Portland where I was a tutor for elementary through college levels with Cornerstone Learning. From February 2016 to present, I have been a tutor with Tutor Corps in San Francisco. I have had experience tutoring fifteen students through Tutor Corps from kindergarten up to high school in multiple levels of mathematics as well as reading, writing and organizational skills.I also have a passion in working with students who struggle with learning differences. At the age of eight, I was diagnosed with ADD and throughout my years in education, I worked hard to gain the skills and strategies that would help me succeed and progress despite my learning differences. As a tutor and teacher, I have a strong understanding of the needs of students. I am passionate about helping every individual go above and beyond, no matter what his or her learning style is. One of my most gratifying teaching experiences was tutoring a first grader who struggled with ADHD. He had been held back for two years in a row, but after a semester of working one-on-one with him using visuals and skills/strategies that worked best for him, this student began acing all of his tests and moved onto second grade at the end of the semester. In addition to teaching math, I also enjoy teaching dance and choreographing. I am currently a company dancer with Peter & Co and perform/tour with the company. I am also a guest dancer for several other Bay Area dance companies and am a freelance choreographer. Furthermore, I am a faculty member of Marin Dance Theatre and Presidio Dance Theatre where I teach contemporary, ballet and private lessons (to students from elementary to high school) and choreograph contemporary works for the pre-professional division.

My first job out of college was as a tutor and mentor in a high school in Chicago. I worked with 9th graders, mainly in Algebra, and I fell in love with both teaching math and working with students one-on-one.I studied Social Policy, with a focus on Education Policy, as well as Economics and Spanish as an undergraduate at Northwestern University, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude. My undergraduate experience solidified my decision to pursue a career working with young people. I am now a graduate student in Social Work at UC Berkeley where I work with foster youth in a case management and counseling role.I have continued to tutor several students in elementary school math, Algebra, study skills, and writing over the last two years. I am hoping to expand my tutoring services, and I am very excited to meet new students through Varsity Tutors!

I have experience with Computer Science from a student, professional, and teaching perspective. I understand what it feels like when you are completely stuck on a problem or concept, so when teaching I use scaffolding to break concepts down into manageable parts. I have experience teaching Computer Science to a classroom of 20 high school students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. This included daily lectures, mentoring, and one on one tutoring/debugging, among other responsibilities. I also gained experience tutoring college students during my time as an undergraduate. I emphasize understanding the concepts behind a problem, not just getting the assignment working, and use real world examples to allow the student to understand through their own perspective!

Graduate of University of California, Berkeley, the premier public university of the U.S. and probably the world, I had studied history and English from some of the most renown historians and literature professors in academia. There I learned the art and rigor of research, reading, writing, and reflective thinking. This December, I will finish a MA at San Francisco State University in English composition, focusing in-depth on all types of writing and how to teach writing to K-12 and university students and business professionals. As a graduate student, I taught a university-level writing-intensive course to freshmen, the type of composition writing course that the AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition exams prepare high school students to study for and get college credit with a high score on the AP exam.I firmly believe that my passion and expertise in writing, literature, and history will help students reach their potential and improve their knowledge, skills, and their passion even if they are not yet engaged with the humanities and social sciences. Knowing many teachers and professors, I also firmly believe that students fall into the cracks of education frequently because of ill-prepared teachers, an overworked system that demands too much time from them without adequate pay and respect, and because most graduate schools of education do not adequately train teachers with evidence-based scholarship and give them the tools they need to succeed. I firmly believe that I and Varsity Tutors can fill this gap in education and in a student's learning by supplementing what schools cannot provide though teachers and professors are very passionate and heartfelt and genuinely care about their students. This is the unique role of the tutor.I can tutor most writing-related courses: AP English courses, AP History courses, SAT Reasoning (reading and writing), high school and university-level courses in writing, English, and history, and even business-related courses for professionals or business majors. In graduate school, I focused on grammar, style, and different types of genres: essays, business writing, grant writing, technical writing, long-form types of writing, and even creative writing. My interests outside my professional life still feed into and enrich my job. I am an aspiring writer in creative nonfiction, novels, short stories, and essays, and I am moving into technical writing with also a deep knowledge of technical subjects that are in high-demand in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. In the summer I teach physics to 8th graders and I worked at the Exploratorium, teaching science to visitors. I am unusual I believe for a humanities person in that I also took electives in physics, mathematics, and chemistry in college, which gives me the confidence and desire to move into technical writing.

I'm a class of 2015 Physics major from the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg Virginia. Born and raised (and currently based!) in Northern Virginia, I have a penchant for American history in addition to the physical sciences and mathematics. I'm a voracious audio-book listener, and often drift to sleep with the words and stories of past philosophers, mathematicians, and world leaders. Beyond this, I thoroughly enjoy playing FIFA '16 on Xbox One, surfing the web, computer programming, and watching silly YouTube videos.More than anything, I'm eager to impart some of the math/physics/economics know-how, tricks, and tips I've learned over the years from taking dozens of courses from the high school level to the upper-most college level unto my students. Finally, having initially struggled with Physics and Math myself as a highschooler and college student, I'm in a unique position to empathize and guide students so they can develop the skills and understanding they need to succeed in their coursework.

I am an undergraduate at Tulane University in New Orleans, but will be spending next year abroad at the London School of Economics. I was born here in San Francisco, and I have lived in this amazing city ever since. I???ve been tutoring for several years in a variety of subjects: from reading and writing for ESL (English as a second language) students, to Calculus and Economics, and for a variety of ages: from kindergarteners to my peers at college. Math has definitely been my favorite subject to tutor; I find joy in helping people who are struggling get to a point where concepts finally make sense. There is a sort of instant gratification when you are able to find a solution to a tricky math problem. Through my experience with standardized tests like the SAT, I have found many tricks to beating the ???game??? of standardized testing and would love to share them with you. Most importantly, I believe that everyone has a unique learning style and that I, as a tutor, need to adapt to be able to help the students I work with get the most out of tutoring.During my free time I enjoy baking, spending time with friends at a park, and going to music festivals. I also love exploring the city of New Orleans when I???m at school, and I even still enjoy wandering San Francisco despite having lived here my entire life.I think everyone has the potential to succeed in whatever subject they choose as long as they put their mind to it. I am looking forward to the chance to help you reach whatever goals you???ve set!

I have four years of teaching experience in a variety of roles from principal instructor of college math classes to one-on-one mentoring with high school students.
