I believe in active learning and using the outdoors when possible. I was a key participant in the implementation of U.T.O.T.E.S.(Using the Outdoors to teach Experiential Science) professional development and developing outdoor learning areas in my first school.Though I was born in the SW mountains of NC, I spent some time as a child in S. Florida prior to returning to the mountains in middle school. I love to hike, camp, fish, and kayak. I also spent a great deal of time mountain and road biking in the late 1990's. I am passionately curious and have done a great deal of traveling mostly across the U.S. and Europe. I love to journal, read and do almost anything creative. I have a diverse love of music and become extremely excited over things like fireworks, funky post-its, Christmas, spontaneity, Sharpies and more! I firmly believe anything is possible and that there are many alternatives to use in place of "I can't". ALL are capable! I work diligently until the student and I find how to best connect and to comprehend according to their interests and strengths.I am currently staying at home to spend as much time with my family as possible. I have a great sense of humor and love to cut-up! However, a core philosophy is to work hard so you can play hard.

I am currently a doctoral student at the University of Southern California, and I completed earlier degrees at the Juilliard School in New York and at La Sierra University in Riverside, CA. At La Sierra as an undergrad, I received dual degrees with honors in violin and mathematics, both of which have led me to teaching opportunities. In tutoring either field, I enjoy the constant adaptation of finding an approach suited to each student that will help them achieve their goals. Both mathematics and music are often considered to be innate talents, but being able to assist students of any background in gaining proficiency is an exciting opportunity for me and a fulfilling one when it happens. Beyond mathematics, I also welcome tutoring opportunities in Chemistry and especially Physics, with it's mathematical foundation.Another field in which I feel passionately about helping others is in English writing. Prior to working for Varsity Tutors, I would often help my friends with editing personal statements. I have also been fortunate to enjoy a key role in a start-up orchestra in New York City as a grant writer. Writing is an indispensable life skill that is too often overlooked, and I feel that my background allows me to be of help in a variety of tutoring subjects involving writing, from test prep to grammar and mechanics.I was fortunate to do well enough on the PSAT to earn a full scholarship for my undergraduate studies, and I recognize the importance of the PSAT, SAT, and AP tests for other students in achieving their educational hopes and dreams with a minimum financial burden. I am happy to work with students to prepare them for the standardized tests in the areas within my expertise.When I am not occupied with school, one of my hobbies is cycling and bicycle mechanics. I've rebuilt a number of vintage steel bicycles, and would like to build a wheel soon. I also like to stay active on the side with video and audio editing projects.

Throughout my junior year, I worked at BUs Writing Center as a writing consultant, where we help students with papers from the writing courses, ESL English courses, and various other courses in the College of Arts and Sciences. Being a consultant has given me the opportunity to work with students from diverse backgrounds, whether they be an ESL student in Biology or a student from Boston studying English, and I am excited to return to this work during my upcoming senior year.Working with so many different students has taught me a lot about tutoring, including valuable lessons about different learning styles and communication. My approach to tutoring is typically to begin with a discussion with the students about what they feel their strengths and weaknesses are, and their past experiences with the subject being discussed. I have found that engaging with the student and opening a line of communication helps me to determine what the focus of a session should be and how directly to approach learning specific topics. Some students require more direct visual step-by-step examples whereas others can benefit by completing a problem individually and then reviewing errors. Therefore, I try to keep in mind that figuring out a students learning process by asking questions about teaching styles and specific challenges is often just as important as the material being taught; not only does identifying these characteristics help me better tailor my tutoring approach, but it can also help the student better learn on their own.Outside of tutoring, I am an avid reader, movie lover, gamer, and concert-goer. When Im not re-reading my favorite Shakespeare play or watching the latest comic book movie, I can usually be found jumping up and down at a rock concert somewhere in the Boston area. Music has been an incredible influence upon my life, allowing me to connect with friends and strangers alike through the art of others. Im also a passionate animal lover, and I volunteer weekly to clean and (mostly) play with cats at the shelter, despite being a bit allergic. Additionally, being a computer science and philosophy double major at Boston University, I love discussing topics about technology and existentialism. People tend to say Im the textbook definition of a nerd, and Id have to proudly agree with them. I love learning new things and sharing knowledge with others, which is one of the reasons I find tutoring so rewarding. Oftentimes I find that as I help a student better understand a topic, I too get to learn quite a lot from them, and Im excited to continue to share my love of knowledge with others.

As a tutor it is really important to not think that just because one method works for one kid that it will automatically work with another. It is my job to make whatever the student is struggling with personal or stated in a way that makes it click. I went to the University of Central Florida and majored in Sociology focusing on youth. I started out volunteering with an organization called Youth for Christ and discovered that working with youth is what brings me the most joy. When an opportunity to volunteer teaching students who had been in trouble with the law came up I jumped on it. These kids required me to not only help the students understand a specific concept but to help them to see the value in understanding the concepts at all. I fell in love with tutoring through that organization because when students struggle with school they will often unknowingly feel a sense of shame that goes pretty deep, when they are able to finally understand what they are struggling with it helps to build their grades as well as their confidence. I love getting to be the person who helps them feel that sense of accomplishment.
