Graduate Test Prep Tutor • +31 Subjects
As a student myself, I have had great success in coursework and with standardized testing. I have a proven track record of taking that experience and applying it to boost both students' test scores and their true understanding of the material.I have 3 years experience as a classroom teacher in a range of environments, along with 3 years tutoring experience. I have current teaching licenses in both Ohio and Maryland for grades 7-12 mathematics, although I am eager to expand my tutoring horizons! I have helped students succeed in math from Algebra 1 through Calculus, though I would be ready and willing to work on subjects from pre-algebra through Calculus 3 (and a bit beyond). I have also helped students preparing for the SAT, ACT, LSAT, and other standardized tests, and have tutored in chemistry and physics as well. I have worked successfully with dozens of students both in person and online.

For 22+ years, I have taught most levels of elementary school and one year at UNCC as the teacher in residence for the Math Department. I am on my second round of being National Board Certified in Early Childhood Education. I also have my Master's degree in Reading K-12. While at UNCC, I started the Mecklenburg Math Club and led a specialty group of Math Olympiads. I've also judged and coached Odyssey of the Mind, softball, and a scrapbook club. I believe in active learning and using the outdoors when possible. I was a key participant in the implementation of U.T.O.T.E.S.(Using the Outdoors to teach Experiential Science) professional development and developing outdoor learning areas in my first school.Though I was born in the SW mountains of NC, I spent some time as a child in S. Florida prior to returning to the mountains in middle school. I love to hike, camp, fish, and kayak. I also spent a great deal of time mountain and road biking in the late 1990's. I am passionately curious and have done a great deal of traveling mostly across the U.S. and Europe. I love to journal, read and do almost anything creative. I have a diverse love of music and become extremely excited over things like fireworks, funky post-its, Christmas, spontaneity, Sharpies and more! I firmly believe anything is possible and that there are many alternatives to use in place of "I can't". ALL are capable! I work diligently until the student and I find how to best connect and to comprehend according to their interests and strengths.I am currently staying at home to spend as much time with my family as possible. I have a great sense of humor and love to cut-up! However, a core philosophy is to work hard so you can play hard.

A superior education brings together critical thinking, curiosity, and creativity to better enrich our own lives and those around us. This is why I chose to go into the field of English teaching as the subject brings together those aspects of learning to fulfillment. In my time working with students, I have always seen the experience as rewarding and enriching through my years of working as a high school tutor, completing a year of student teaching, and finishing my college program at the University of Utah. After earning my Bachelors of English Teaching, I went to graduate school to obtain my Masters of Education, along with teaching license.I have been tutoring in secondary English Language Arts (ELA) for the last two years as well as taught secondary ELA in my student teaching. I covered subjects from the basics of grammar and writing mechanics to critical theory and Shakespeare. I love finding the interesting aspects of English and how they relate our world as a whole and connect across time to bring a deeper understanding of importance. With tutoring, I enjoy a conversational approach along the lines of the assignment to bring to light new ideas and understanding for students and myself. I look forward to working together!

I am currently a doctoral student at the University of Southern California, and I completed earlier degrees at the Juilliard School in New York and at La Sierra University in Riverside, CA. At La Sierra as an undergrad, I received dual degrees with honors in violin and mathematics, both of which have led me to teaching opportunities. In tutoring either field, I enjoy the constant adaptation of finding an approach suited to each student that will help them achieve their goals. Both mathematics and music are often considered to be innate talents, but being able to assist students of any background in gaining proficiency is an exciting opportunity for me and a fulfilling one when it happens. Beyond mathematics, I also welcome tutoring opportunities in Chemistry and especially Physics, with it's mathematical foundation.Another field in which I feel passionately about helping others is in English writing. Prior to working for Varsity Tutors, I would often help my friends with editing personal statements. I have also been fortunate to enjoy a key role in a start-up orchestra in New York City as a grant writer. Writing is an indispensable life skill that is too often overlooked, and I feel that my background allows me to be of help in a variety of tutoring subjects involving writing, from test prep to grammar and mechanics.I was fortunate to do well enough on the PSAT to earn a full scholarship for my undergraduate studies, and I recognize the importance of the PSAT, SAT, and AP tests for other students in achieving their educational hopes and dreams with a minimum financial burden. I am happy to work with students to prepare them for the standardized tests in the areas within my expertise. When I am not occupied with school, one of my hobbies is cycling and bicycle mechanics. I've rebuilt a number of vintage steel bicycles, and would like to build a wheel soon. I also like to stay active on the side with video and audio editing projects.

AP English Literature and Composition Tutor • +31 Subjects
I first became interested in tutoring in high school, where I found myself helping friends in anything from AP Literature to the math portions on the SATs. In my experience, working one on one with people has been incredibly rewarding, as it allows for a deeper level of communication between the tutor and the tutee. I began tutoring more formally when I started attending college at Boston University. Throughout my junior year, I worked at BUs Writing Center as a writing consultant, where we help students with papers from the writing courses, ESL English courses, and various other courses in the College of Arts and Sciences. Being a consultant has given me the opportunity to work with students from diverse backgrounds, whether they be an ESL student in Biology or a student from Boston studying English, and I am excited to return to this work during my upcoming senior year.Working with so many different students has taught me a lot about tutoring, including valuable lessons about different learning styles and communication. My approach to tutoring is typically to begin with a discussion with the students about what they feel their strengths and weaknesses are, and their past experiences with the subject being discussed. I have found that engaging with the student and opening a line of communication helps me to determine what the focus of a session should be and how directly to approach learning specific topics. Some students require more direct visual step-by-step examples whereas others can benefit by completing a problem individually and then reviewing errors. Therefore, I try to keep in mind that figuring out a students learning process by asking questions about teaching styles and specific challenges is often just as important as the material being taught; not only does identifying these characteristics help me better tailor my tutoring approach, but it can also help the student better learn on their own.Outside of tutoring, I am an avid reader, movie lover, gamer, and concert-goer. When Im not re-reading my favorite Shakespeare play or watching the latest comic book movie, I can usually be found jumping up and down at a rock concert somewhere in the Boston area. Music has been an incredible influence upon my life, allowing me to connect with friends and strangers alike through the art of others. Im also a passionate animal lover, and I volunteer weekly to clean and (mostly) play with cats at the shelter, despite being a bit allergic. Additionally, being a computer science and philosophy double major at Boston University, I love discussing topics about technology and existentialism. People tend to say Im the textbook definition of a nerd, and Id have to proudly agree with them. I love learning new things and sharing knowledge with others, which is one of the reasons I find tutoring so rewarding. Oftentimes I find that as I help a student better understand a topic, I too get to learn quite a lot from them, and Im excited to continue to share my love of knowledge with others.

I have worked with youth for the past six years, and one thing I have found to be consistently true is that no two kids are the same. As a tutor it is really important to not think that just because one method works for one kid that it will automatically work with another. It is my job to make whatever the student is struggling with personal or stated in a way that makes it click. I went to the University of Central Florida and majored in Sociology focusing on youth. I started out volunteering with an organization called Youth for Christ and discovered that working with youth is what brings me the most joy. When an opportunity to volunteer teaching students who had been in trouble with the law came up I jumped on it. These kids required me to not only help the students understand a specific concept but to help them to see the value in understanding the concepts at all. I fell in love with tutoring through that organization because when students struggle with school they will often unknowingly feel a sense of shame that goes pretty deep, when they are able to finally understand what they are struggling with it helps to build their grades as well as their confidence. I love getting to be the person who helps them feel that sense of accomplishment.

Hi, I'm Elizabeth Krochka, but you can call me Beth. I'm a 23 year old Allegheny College graduate with a passion for learning and teaching. One day, I'd like to teach and I hope that working with Varsity Tutors and my clients will help me prepare to be a better teacher. I've always loved school, mainly because I had teachers who were extremely inspired by what they were teaching. They are why I think passion is the key to teaching and I hope to share my passion for learning with my clients. I think that a good teacher or tutor can be the difference between learning being a chore or an opportunity. Passion is contagious and once a student or client can view the information in a new light, what was once impossible becomes a conquered challenge.

I am a graduate of the College of New Jersey. I received a Bachelor's of the Arts in Psychology and Master's in Elementary Education and the Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students. I also earned 21 credits at Rowan University in order to obtain an endorsement as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities. Since the start of my career, I have worked with children and students from ages birth to 21. I have extensive expereince in teaching literacy to students who are Deaf and tutoring hearing students in this area. I have also provided academic support across various subjects for students 3-21, as well as direct instruction in the area of Transition (postsecondary). I am fluent in American Sign Language and take a person interest in Deaf Culture as my sibling was Deaf. I believe a student's education should be tailored to their specific needs and learning styles. Because I mostly teach one-on-one, I take great pride in being able to learn about each of my students on a deeper level and being able to provide that tailored instruction. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and crafting. I also make time to volunteer at local food pantries whenever possible.
