I've spent the past year teaching high school technology and business classes and will begin graduate school at Columbia University in the fall. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with my BA from St. Edward's University in Communication and a member of the Honors program where I completed my undergraduate thesis. Teaching is a huge passion for me. I found this to be my calling as I retired from collegiate football with an injury and began to coach and help create Linfield College's football training program. Through this experience, my love for helping people learn and to eventually become teachers in their own right blossomed. While I specifically tutor writing (from MLA to APA formatting and styles) my tutoring style focuses on creating independent and critical thinkers. My hope and goal is for you to leave one of my tutoring sessions not feeling like you have been told everything you have done wrong, but to have been challenged to take ownership of your learning, writing and ultimately your thinking. I don't want perfect students. Rather, I want to tutor students with passions and curiosities, who aren't afraid to work on their weaknesses and have a hunger for learning and thinking outside the box. My firm belief remains that as you become a better writer you will become a better thinker, a better member of our society and ultimately a stronger person as a result. I am a retired high school Math Teacher and Principal with over 35 years experience working with students. I hold a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics from the University of Mary Washington and a Masters of Science in Computer Science from Hood College. I also hold certifications for Math 8-12, Computer Science, and Secondary Administration I and II.I have been tutoring all manner of math, computer science, and test prep related courses online since 2015. For the past 4 years my focus has been almost exclusively on tutoring calculus (AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC , College Calc 1, College Calc 2). These are my favorite courses to tutor as I taught the AP program for nearly 20 years before becoming a high school administrator.My methodology is teaching students to think and to diagnose problems, thus helping them to develop strong habits of mind and self-confidence in problem solving. I am currently a neuroscience PhD student at Columbia University. I majored in English and Psychology from Brown University, with a 4.0 and honours in Psychology. Following this, I worked at a lab at UPenn for three years, slowly transitioning to software engineering and computational neuroscience.I am passionate about reading, writing, neuroscience and coding. I also enjoy teaching and tutoring. Over the past 10 years, I have worked with a variety of students, aged 4-21, from neurodivergent and underprivileged backgrounds. I am also comfortable teaching all age ranges, including the elderly, since I have experience working with them as well. Growing up, in my opinion, is the most important part of adolescence. I grew up in a household where my mom, a single parent working many hours to make ends meet was out of the house a lot. As the oldest child I learned to start preparing dinner on the days that my mom didnt have time to. I set a good example for my sisters. I enforced rules such as bedtimes and I took the mantle and achieved the responsibility of the leadership position in my mothers absence. I did extracurricular activities and sports such as track & field and afterschool clubs. But towards sophomore year, my involvement in afterschool activities decreased, my mom got a new job with a different schedule that required me to pick up my sisters from school every day.I think that I had to grow up a little earlier than most kids around my age. Not many people that I know have grew up in the same circumstances that I did. I believe that this experience has and is continuing to make me grow into a more mature person with good character and strong leadership skills such as patience, determination, perseverance and self-sacrifice. I learned that there is a time and place for everything, which especially pertains to balancing schoolwork, social life and responsibilities. Many people especially my mother and sisters have too much reliance on me for something like that to be an option. Though my mother is everything for us and we would literally have nothing if it werent for her, there are even times when she says to me, where would we be without you, or youve helped me so much, I cant imagine how we would have had ended up without you.
