I have always had a passion for education, especially tutoring. I tutored various subjects at Dalton State College, where I received my bachelor's degree in English and an associate degree in sociology. Then, I moved to Colorado where I became a Denver Math Fellow. My job was to help small groups and individual students catch up in math. I built strong relationships with my students, and they all achieved growth on PARCC. Last year, I entered the Denver Teacher Residency and taught seventh grade math in Denver Public Schools. I recently graduated with my master's degree in curriculum, instruction, and assessment with endorsements in special education and culturally, linguistically diverse learners, and I will be working as a middle school math interventionist next year. Although most people think you can't be a "math person" and an "English person" at the same time, I defy the stereotype because I believe that all knowledge is connected. I aim to help students realize the relevance of the content to their lives and to break things down into manageable steps. I celebrate mistakes as learning opportunities, and I emphasize the importance of perseverance. My goal is to inspire students to think critically and to help them develop the academic skills they need to succeed. I work with students of all ages, and I often find that I learn just as much from them as they learn from me!

Hi! My name is Terri and I am a mom of a couple of high energy, sweet and funny kids. I grew up in Southern California and then moved to London at 17 years old for church leadership training program. I loved it in London and stayed for the next 10 years. I met my husband there and went to the University of East London and got my BA in Psychosocial Studies and her Master’s in International Social Work and Community Development Studies. While at University, I worked as a teacher at an Alternative School in London for high risk youth and was also a counselor running a drop in service in a number of local London schools.I worked with LifeLine Network International for several years as Business Development Coordinator, working with international development organizations in over 16 countries. She was Project Manager for all external grants and had wonderful opportunities to visit Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe through that job. When I came back to the USA in 2009, I became a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for Adams and Broomfield Counties, supporting children who have been abused or neglected. I then became a Social Worker, working in both Intake and Ongoing Services at Arapahoe County Human Services in 2013. In 2015, I began working with the City and County of Denver as an IT Project Manager.This year, I am excited to spend more time at home with my kids getting the opportunity to work with children and young people at Varsity Tutors. I have a passion for learning, helping people discover their full potential and seeing the joy on someone’s face when they have conquered a personal challenge.

I focused heavily on: assisting students in revisions (punctuation/grammar), understanding writing assignments, helping students understand how to take their papers to the next level, and so on. While in high school, I also tutored elementary and middle school students with their reading and writing through an organization called LINK (a high school freshman mentor program that also provided the chance to tutor students of younger ages. Though, to tutor younger ages, it required a selection). Majoring in psychology has allowed me to dive deeper into how the brain works, and this aids me in the way I tutor. Every individual has a unique learning style, of which the broadest categories are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Discovering what style works best for a student while also tapping into the background knowledge a student already has altered the way I tutor (students may also enjoy multiple learning styles). With this combination, I build on the student's knowledge in a manner they will understand. Through tutoring, I realize that the best feeling is when something has finally clicked for a student after they have been struggling with something for quite a while!

I have experience as a full time Chinese Immersion Teacher and have taught Chinese for many years. I enjoy working with beginning learners and continuing learners in Chinese. I've taught various age level students: adults, young children, and all the way up to college students. I am a native Chinese speaker. I grew up in China and speak standard Chinese. I am also a second language learner; therefore, I understand the challenges one face when learning another language. I have tutored high school students in a drop-in resource center in various subjects including math of all levels, chemistry, and English, making me adequately equipped in a variety of topics. I have also tutored several students long-term. Establishing relationships with students and exploring their unique learning styles is my favorite part of tutoring. I prioritize helping students discover HOW to learn in a manner that is the most effective for them, so they can begin to use those skills on their own throughout their education. As I was finishing my degree, I was working full-time in the financial industries. Upon completion of my degree I decided to pursue my passion of teaching and have not looked back. I received my teaching license through an alternative license program through Metro State. As a teacher of four years, I have had the opportunity to work with students from Kindergarten up to 6th grade (where I currently teach Math). A number of years back I also lived and taught in Mexico for two years.I am currently only tutoring math (for elementary and middle school aged students). I'm focused on math because of the importance it has in our daily lives. Aside from the ability to read, I don't think there is a skill that is in greater demand. That being said, I recognize that there are many aspects of Math that can be confusing. I like to employ chants and hand movements to help remember the vocabulary and methods necessary to be successful in Math.Outside of the classroom, I love spending time with my family (wife, 4 kids, and a dog!). When I'm taking some time to myself, I can either be found reading a good book (I love most genres but hold a special place for Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Dystopian books. or watching some sports on TV (Go Broncos!). I do enjoy to travel when funds and time allow. But mostly my time is spent ensuring that I'm helping my students be as successful as they can.
