Despite graduating magna cum laude from a mechanical engineering program on a full scholarship, I didn't always like math and science. I attended Johns Hopkins for my undergraduate studies and went on to complete a Masters in medical science at Boston University School of Medicine. I am currently taking a gap year to apply to medical schools and am interested in helping students master the natural sciences, as well as prepare for standardized tests. Being tutored and tutoring has always been a large part of my academic career and I have found it is often an integral part of truly mastering a topic. My tutoring approach takes a hands-on style that lets students work through problems with assistance first, and then on their own. This style allows the student to become confident in his/her knowledge of the material and face new problems with that same confidence. Each student is different and I do my best to quickly learn what works best for their learning style, and cater to that specific style. Outside of academia I currently work as a medical consultant and enjoy swimming and aviation.

I have over 10 years of experience tutoring students in English and all types of History. I have also tutored students in preparation for the HiSET, ACT, SAT and other entrance exams. I love tutoring because it gives me a chance to work individually with each student. My teaching style is very student centered approach which allows the tutoring atmosphere to be particularly great because I can focus on your student and his or her specific needs. I have experience in various types of classroom settings including inclusion. I taught special education for over 10 years and developed curriculum and lesson plans for my students. This required me to work with the classroom teacher to develop the individual goals of each student. I also worked with English as Second language students.I love History because no matter how much you look into the past there is always something more to find and discover. Learning history also provides a different point of view to look at the past with.English is fascinating because it helps students to expand their imagination. English also allows a student to put his/her thoughts into motion.

I have a bachelor degree in Physics Engineering, and a Master's degree in Physics, both from University Laval Quebec, Canada. A Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Montreal, Canada, and postdoctoral training at the Upstate Medical University of the State University of New York. I taught at the college level for 18 years, and I enjoyed it immensely. I love teaching, I love the student interaction, I particularly enjoy seeing students maturing in their learning and practice of science. The fact that I still interact with my graduate students many years after graduation attests of my relation with them. My tutoring approach consists at listening to students, find the gray areas, and implement original ways to address points that may have been missed in their learning. I like scaffolding when teaching concepts, e.g, solve problems steps by steps for students, but as we progress in the sessions I bring the students to intervene more more in the solutions, i.e., progressively removing the scaffold. This way the students better develop their abilities to solve problems. They learn how to retrieve from their own knowledge base. Learning is fun. I will not spare any efforts to make my teaching effective still enjoyable.

Ava

ACT English Tutor • +18 Subjects

Hi, I'm Ava! I'm currently a senior at the University of Washington. I have worked with kids since I was old enough to work--when I was 15 years old, I began teaching figure skating (a sport I have over 10 years of competitive experience in) at my local ice rink to kids of all ages and abilities. I later began to tutor middle school students in English and Social Studies subjects as well as work at a local day camp during summers. Due to the Covid-19 crisis, I am home in Salt Lake City, but normally I would be working part-time as an Extended Care staff member at a school in the Seattle area. Although the capacities in which I've worked with kids differ vastly, my passion for helping them grow and reach their full potential has never wavered. I am looking forward to starting teaching in the fall with the Teach for America Idaho corps and would love to help students learn and grow through Varsity in the meantime!
