ACT Writing Tutor • +32 Subjects

Hello! My name is Cynthia and I am a current sophomore at Vanderbilt University! I am double majoring in Public Policy and Human & Organizational Development with a minor in Spanish. I first started tutoring in high school, when I started working at Kumon Learning Center and began teaching elementary and middle school students reading and mathematics. I also volunteered my tutoring services through my high school's National Merit Society, through which I helped my peers in advanced subjects such as AP testing, ACT, SAT, and PSAT prep.My favorite thing about tutoring is the personalized aspect of it. Students get a chance to sit down one on one with a tutor and ask them specific questions about areas that they struggle in, and the tutor has the opportunity to personalize the lessons to best suit the student. I believe in tailoring teaching methods to align with the student's learning style and passions so that he/she has the best educational experience possible. When I'm not studying or working, I enjoy playing piano, reading, making chocolate chip cookies, or rewatching Friends on Netflix for the 17th time. I strive to be the most effective tutor possible, so please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or concerns!

ACT Science Tutor • +13 Subjects

I am currently working towards my degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Dayton. In high school, I tutored students around my age frequently with my school's chapter of Mu Alpha Theta (math national honor society). Since I arrived at college, I have been tutoring my peers in calculus, biology, and chemistry. I'm an engineering major, so of course my favorite subjects are science and math. I love to teach students any type of math or science; in fact, I find it fun. Although, I do find things other than school fun (I'm not that lame). I'm involved in a considerable amount of extracurricular activities at UD. I play trombone my school's jazz band (which recently travelled to New Orleans) and for my school's pep band (which supports the best basketball team in the A10 [go Flyers!]). I'm also on the club racquetball team for my school and I am a hockey fanatic. Despite the fact that most engineering majors are introverts, I am quite the talker. I will enjoy sitting down with you and talking through any issues you may have with your subject. I tend to make my students work on their own up to the point where they get stuck in a problem and explain their thought process as they go through. That way, I can understand what my students understand and what they don't. I hope you choose me as your tutor and I am looking forward to helping you succeed!

ACT Reading Tutor • +30 Subjects

I am passionate about teaching because I love helping someone understand and become confident in a concept that previously baffled them. I am a student at The Ohio State University working towards a Computer Science degree. I have experience tutoring math up through AP Calculus BC, French, and AP Literature. My experience in tutoring comes from the free weekly French tutoring program I initiated at my high school, which grew to me tutoring other subjects as well. My teaching philosophy involves discussion and helping the student come to an answer themselves, which allows the topic to stick. Because of this one of my favorite subjects to tutor is writing. Writing tutoring helps the student grow and allows them to see the problems in their writing themselves. Outside of academia I enjoy calligraphy and playing piano.

African-American History Tutor • +23 Subjects

From an early age, I have always loved reading and learning about literature and history from around the world. Studying the past and the future through material objects such as books and historical records is a passion of mine which allows for a better understanding of the world. I have tutored for a number of years, served as a professor for years, and am happy to pass on to students information necessary in order to succeed!I like to begin sessions initially with finding out about the student themselves and how best they learn/what they believe their weak areas are.Once this is completed, I usually target these areas initially within the first session to get a feel of where the student is within the subject. From there on, I will plan sessions targeting areas we would have discussed which will include re-cap activities to see if the student is retaining the information that I have taught. This structure allows the students confidence to increase as they will get a clear indication that they are improving with their subject as they move on and target another area they are unsure on.I think it is very important to stress any achievement or improvement no matter how small to show their improvement which will allow them to complete tasks independently with ease and confidence so that they feel ready for exams.

Hello! I am a graduate of Tennessee State University (Spanish & Psychology) and Argosy University (Human Services). I am currently working on my Master's in Psychology with a certificate in Applied Behavioral Analysis on my way to earning my PhD in Psychology. I LOVE learning and sharing that knowledge with others! I have found that one of the most effective ways to learn a subject and retain the knowledge of it is to teach it to someone else! I love to educate others because I enjoy learning new things and I know that in a regular classroom, often teachers don't have the time to cater to each individuals learning styles, weak points and general needs so I get to do that in my one on one tutoring sessions. I take time to get to know each student and work with them in the way that they learn best!

ACT English Tutor • +28 Subjects

Teaching and tutoring has always been a passion of mine. My first job was a tutoring position and it only helped my drive to help others understand concepts and apply them to any problems. As a senior in high school, I created my own sessions to help students successfully take the reading comprehension part of the SAT. Ever since I have been actively involved in helping students ranging from elementary school to college in subject areas such as math, science, reading, English, and writing. I completed my undergraduate degree at Youngstown State University and graduated with my bachelors in science. I then went on to obtain my masters in public health at Case Western. Education is and foremost the most important part of my life and I know that in order to help students learn, I have to first understand their strengths and drawbacks. I believe with my perspective, I can quickly help and foster understanding in all the students whom I will have the opportunity to tutor.
