My teaching philosophy is that the student usually knows what they need in order to learn. While it is very important to have control in the classroom as a teacher in order to direct learning activities efficiently, the student needs to be encouraged to interrupt the flow occasionally and ask questions. Learning styles vary greatly between students, and catering only to what one considers the "norm" allows people to slip through the cracks. I have found that I am not the most effective teacher unless I coax students to revisit material that did not make sense to them in class. My experience has been primarily with freshmen scientists and non-majors in general science courses, so the majority of them have not developed a comfort with the material and do not feel welcome asking questions for clarity at the beginning of the semester, but after the first few weeks of class I see students becoming much more adept at approaching the material.I have a progressive attitude about participation in classes. I believe there are circumstances where the curriculum needs to be adjusted because the lifestyle of the students cannot adapt to it. I am willing to give exams or quizzes during an office hour if a students has a rotating work schedule, or allow a student with a learning disability to request services in my class after a deadline has passed. I have an interest in universal design and other modifications to curriculum that help make higher education accessible to a broader subset of people. With that said, I am serious about maintaining order and consistency with my students. I do not like vague expectations or double-standards, and I work hard to make the course requirements very transparent for my students. I do expect students to care about their attendance to class and the quality of their work, and I emphasize participation and self-directed study as the key to succeeding in my classes. I always aim to create an environment that feels fair, safe and predictable because developing trust early on in the semester has been crucial for me to reach students, especially those that struggle.

I've been reading and writing for as long as I can remember, and I love sharing my knowledge and passion with other students. In 2017, I graduated from Scripps College in Southern California with a BA in English and have tutored both middle school and high school creative and academic writing. I've also provided writing consulting for college students and adults, and my tutoring and love of English has taken me from the west coast to the French Alps. I currently work as a freelance copyeditor, and am always practicing and brushing up on my literary knowledge.I love helping students get beyond the drudgery of writing assignments, and learn how to write essays that THEY are excited about. My style is very professional and focused yet relatable and personal. I try my best to help students approach writing beyond the immediacy of the assignment to a larger appreciation for the art of effective communication, regardless of their interests. In particular, my favorite subjects to tutor are essay writing, argument/thesis development, and literary analysis. In my free time, you can find me reading, writing, listening to music, babying my plants, and spending time in nature.

I am a graduate of University of Nevada Las Vegas. I received my Masters of Education in Special Education. Since graduation, I have taught for the Clark County School district as a Cross Categorial Special Education Teacher, and as a Short and Long Term Substitute as of 2004. I also tutored during this time. While teaching for the school district as a Special Education teacher I spent time in the resource room and the general education settings, main streaming special needs students from the resource room to the general education room. And in the general education classroom I would co-teach with the general education teacher. This model of teaching is very beneficial for all students and teachers in the classroom. I teach and tutor a broad range of subjects, however the subject I enjoy teaching the most is math. Mostly due to it being a subject that is not gray, you either got the answer correct or you did not and it helps to teach logic. Over the years while tutoring and teaching I would design and implement lesson plans for several tutored students ranging from ages 8 to 18 if not designed and implemented lesson plans for five high school resource/general classroom math classes. I also would organize, track and implement study materials for all my students daily. My teaching philosophy is to be thorough, versatile and try multiple techniques so to help students find their own learning style. Each student is unique in the way they learn and I feel I need to tailor teaching strategies and techniques to the students needs. When I'm not teaching I spend my time caring for my family if not enjoying the things that interest me such as health and travel. Or one of the many hobbies I have like, writing, reading, art and cooking.

I am a graduate of California Lutheran University. I received my Bachelor's of Science in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Health Professions. Currently, I am working towards obtaining my Master's degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. My degree will be in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Biomechanics.I am currently working as a Graduate Assistant in the Kinesiology Department. My passion for tutoring started in 6th grade. That year, I decided that I wanted to take the trip from California to Cooperstown, New York, when Tony Gwynn was to be a sure first ballot Hall of Fame selection. I came up with a plan to begin tutoring 2nd and 3rd grade students, to make enough money, to make my dream trip happen. I was successful, but more importantly, I learned that I had a passion and a gift for certain academic areas and sharing this gift with others.Throughout the next eight years, I tutored on and off while juggling school, baseball, and family. In addition to this tutoring experience, I worked for two years as a Camp Counselor for the city, during semester breaks, in college. Needless to say, I have a great relationship with children and I thoroughly enjoy watching them succeed.I am a huge sports fanatic and I enjoy just about anything to do with sports. In addition, I have a real passion for music. I played drums for several years throughout elementary and middle school.
