I am currently a Sophomore in college who LOVES to teach math. I have experience in working alongside teacher, grading tests, writing lesson plans, and of course, helping students. I have worked with students of all different backgrounds, including learning disorders and honors students. I work with all levels of math up to Calculus 1 (which I'm hoping to add in about a year). I am a graduate of Arizona State University. I received my two Bachelors of Science degrees in Biological Sciences (Animal Physiology and Behavior) and Political Sciences with a certificate in Civic Education. Since graduating, I have started working with the Denver Math Fellows helping close the opportunity gap for high need students by providing small group math instruction. I find the most excitement in tutoring middle school math and science, Algebra I, and General Biology. I find that for most students what makes any subject hard is being unable to use what you already know and not knowing how to tackle the subject. I want to help students by giving them multiple access points and allowing them to access whatever content they desire at their current level. I believe the most important way to help students learn in is to relate content to their current interests and future goals. In my spare time, I enjoy reading non-fiction about technology and neurobiology, hiking, watching sports (mainly football and basketball) and listening to jazz and classical music.

I was what is referred to as a nontraditional student. I struggled in high school due to undiagnosed ADD. Upon receiving a diagnosis later at age 25 I returned to school. I received a BSCh and MS in Analytical Chemistry from The University of Memphis, a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Vanderbilt University, and served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Indiana University before moving to the Denver area in 2011.I currently homeschool my 13 year-old son, and have tutored throughout my graduate academic career. I have taught undergraduate chemistry labs at levels from introductory courses for non-science backgrounds through advanced mixed graduate/undergraduate classes for chemistry majors. I understand that different people learn in different ways, and that the best teachers adapt their methods to the needs of their students.In addition to my passion for science, I have a love for music. Both of my children belong to the Denver Young Artist Orchestra and have performed musical theater with the Phamaly theater group.

Since graduation I have worked as a structural engineer, designing hospitals, health care facilities, bridges, dams, and other structures. I have experience tutoring undergraduate students in many subjects related to math and engineering. I have a hug passion for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and believe STEM allows us to understand this ever-changing and increasing complex world. STEM allows us to solve and understand complex and interesting problems. I have had the pleasure of working with engineers without borders, a nonprofit organization that travels and works with global communities to provide engineering solutions for basic needs such as clean drinking water. My main goal is to help students understand and love the world of STEM. I have grown to treat every day as an opportunity to improve himself and those around me. Outside of my work as an engineer and tutor you can find me climbing rocks, camping, snowboarding, mountain biking or practicing yoga. I provide a relaxed environment to help students learn, grow and feel comfortable asking questions.

I've lived and worked in four countries, including Japan, France and Jordan.I've taught classes up to 40 and tutored both individuals and small groups up to four, working with a range of ages, from preschool to adult, and a range of ability level, from participants in special needs programs to students at one of the most competitive high schools in Japan.I am an excellent tutor because I am patient, engaged and encouraging. Prior to beginning my doctoral studies, I was a creative writing/English lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis where I completed my MFA and senior post-graduate teaching fellowship. I received my BA in Philosophy from Carleton College in 2009. Before my time in St. Louis and Denver, I taught English Literature at the Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut and, earlier, at Germantown High School in Philadelphia. During my time at Loomis and Germantown, I taught English Lit I/III, Contemporary Literature, 10th grade grammar and expository writing seminars, Literature of the Sea, Experimental Novel, and Creative Writing. At Wash U, I taught Fiction Writing I, II, and Microfiction, and last year I facilitated pedagogy training for Wash U MFA graduate students. I currently tutor at DU's Writing Center and, beginning this fall, I will teach undergraduate fiction classes. I have a marked interest in modern and contemporary fiction, though I very much look forward to helping students with all craft/literature/essay writing/verbal test taking endeavors.

As a certified math and business teacher, I have worked with students between grades 5 and 12, both in person and online, to fill gaps in understanding previous concepts as well as helping them grasp new ideas that are being introduced to them.I received my undergraduate degree in Natural Science with a concentration in Mathematics from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. I also earned an MBA from the University of Florida. I have recently earned a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics with a focus in Secondary Education from University of Northern Colorado. As you could probably tell, my strength is helping students in all levels of Mathematics from basic arithmetic to Calculus. My favorite branches of mathematics to tutor are the middle school levels (fractions, integers, and proportional reasoning) as well as Algebra and Geometry in the high school levels. I like working with these subjects because the ideas really bring out how math is connected to even the most basic life skills, from cooking and construction, to problem-solving, logic, and general reasoning.I love talking about business concepts and how they relate to each other. I especially enjoy the connection between the creative side of Marketing and the analytical/financial aspects involved.I am a pretty laid-back, low-pressure guy who expects students to make mistakes so we can learn from them. Mistakes are expected, inspected, and respected. I believe that learning should be relevant and relate to students' lives. I believe that all students can learn mathematics, but that every student learns differently. In working with students individually, I can learn more about the student's styles of learning and tailor instruction to fit that learning style.In my spare time, I like to watch TV and movies, especially when time travel is involved. The idea of time and time travel is fascinating to me. I also like to read books that take a classic story and re-imagine them into different contexts, places, and times. I am currently reading "Cress", the third book in the Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer. "Cress" is based on the story of Rapunzel and is woven into the previous novels "Cinder" (based on Cinderella) and "Scarlet" (based on Little Red Riding Hood).In addition to reading, TV, and movies, I like to do counted cross-stitch and crochet. I finally taught myself how to knit, too.

I graduated with the my Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering and my MBA. I love mathematics and constantly get amazed by its power to explain the universe. It is through this endeavor that I landed myself in the field of engineering, and I became an Electrical Engineer. I sincerely believe that knowledge expands by sharing with others. So, I became a tutor and strive to make my students as excited about Mathematics as I am!

School, homework, learning; these don't have to be yucky words. That stuff can be fun, learning is supposed to be an interesting activity, and I make sure that it is. Before receiving my B.A. in Asian Languages and Literature from the University of Minnesota, I studied abroad for a year in China. There, I also worked as the lead teacher in a new ESL school for adults where I provided lesson plans for the school and utilized my own classroom format to engage the students. I also tutored several young Chinese girls in English where we learned by translating their favorite Taylor Swift songs and watching Justin Bieber on Oprah. I don't believe education should be dull or limited to pencil and paper, and I work hard with my students to find the best way to optimize learning.I am an avid long distance runner and podcast listener. I'm nuts about traveling and hiking and have lived in San Francisco and Alaska within the last year. But mostly, I love learning. Until graduating I had no idea that it was so awesome, and so essential to sanity and happiness. What's even better is when one is allowed to learn in their own way, so that it's not a chore, but a fun pastime.
