I am not a professional teacher, nor have I ever been. I have been taught by wonderful teachers, and terrible teachers, and feel as though, given the chance, I could fit in somewhere in between, closer to the former than the latter. In school I loved and excelled at English and Drama, and since have...

Algebra Tutor • +4 Subjects
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree at Central Washington University majoring in Mathematics. I have 4 years of tutoring experience as well as 2 years acting in a substitute paraeducator role. My main specialty is with Math but, I have worked with students on learning how to understand/interpret literature as well learn strategies to employ when proofreading. I can also offer a more generalized support with other subjects. Much of my experience as a para was spent supporting students who were in an alternative classroom setting and needed just that bit more support to help them reach their goals. I shockingly enjoy tutoring in math the most, because I have extensive experience in it and have learned quite a few ways to impart different topics from helping a variety of students. The reason I have taken to tutoring is because I have always found a great deal of enjoyment watching as the switch goes on in a students head when they finally grasp a concept. Watching students slowly grasp onto topics and build up their confidence is a wonderful thing to witness. In terms of my general approach/philosophy to tutoring, I think that students should be treated as responsible for their learning and understood as equals in striving towards their educational goals. When I have time to myself, I tend to enjoy playing video games and reading to help destress.

I am a graduate from one of the best universities in the nation, where I graduated at the top of my class with two degrees: one in Electrical Engineering and the other in Dance. As an electrical engineer, I study digital signal processing and controls, developing projects such as equalizers, audio mixers, and building robots capable of navigating oceans without the need for human operators. As a dancer, I have had the pleasure of learning from the biggest names in our city such as Rachael Lincoln, Mark Haim, Wade Madsen, and many others. Today I work as a software engineer in Seattle, WA and moonlight as a dance performer and creator.I have many years of experience tutoring students in computer science, high school mathematics, and dance. In college I TAed a digital signal processing class, where I was ranked one of the best teachers in the College of Engineering. I successfully pioneered the first hackathon in San Francisco aimed at teaching middle school, high school, and early college age students how to code. As a dance instructor, I have taught students in both middle and high school. As an instructor, I absolutely love teaching these topics and more because it provides me with the opportunity to propel the next generation to greater heights than mine.Personally, I believe that all students are capable of learning any topic, and that this can be accomplished by truly picturing exactly how all these concepts work in their head. And exactly how the concepts are pictured is dependent on the learning style of the student, which I will help them discover through the process of tutoring. Discovering this learning style is incredibly important both to me teaching a student, but also to teach a student how to approach learning on their own in the future. Knowledge of this will make their study time more efficient, and help them understand what they need from their teachers in the future. In my free time, I do yoga, choreograph new works, take class in ballet/modern dance, code fancy things, and play piano.

My name is Kurry and I heart learning!About me:I grew up in NW Washington and attended Whatcom Community College. After I received my Associates Degree, I received my Bachelors Degree in Political Science.I then attended Chapman Law School in California. I received my J.D. with emphasis in business law and taxation. University of Washington School of Law's graduate program in taxation. I graduated this past June and received my LL.M. in Taxation.I first began to tutor when I was 17 and I quickly realized I was a natural teacher, but more importantly, I discovered I truly enjoyed teaching. For the 3 years I attended law school, I tutored college students in English, Psychology, Literature, and a variety of other subjects. One of my favorite authors once wrote that the ability to impart knowledge consists of two things: first of a natural talent for dealing with students, for getting in their minds and putting things in a way that they can comprehend. And second, of a deep belief in the interest and importance of the thing taught, a concern about it amounting to a kind of passion. I believe a teacher ought also urge his students to think critically. It's almost always the case that rote memorization of facts or data cannot impart the same deep understanding of some subject or issue that becomes possible through critical examination and asking "why" things are the way they are.I'd love to be your tutor!

I am currently pursuing my masters in Creative Writing in Fiction at Saint Mary's College of California, where I also teach English Composition and tutor at the Center for Writing Across the Curriculum.Writing is what I do, what I love, and teaching it to others is my passion. That passion allowed me to graduate from the University of Washington with a 3.97 GPA and receive writing awards for my academic and creative work. I strive to share that enthusiasm and pursuit of excellence with my students. My goal is to help students become independent thinkers and learners, able to handle even the most difficult assignments without feeling overwhelmed. Good grades on individual assignments is not the goal, only a byproduct of the work done in sessions which result in clear, thoughtful, well-researched writing across disciplines for a variety of audiences and purposes. I specialize in high school, college, and non-traditional students who need help improving their writing in any capacity. I try to make sessions as fun and engaging as possible while working seriously on the task at hand. In my spare time I love writing science fiction, reading, traveling, petting the occasional cat, and playing baseball.I'm always open and available for questions, so send me an email and let me know how I can help!

Adult ESL/ELL Tutor • +27 Subjects
I received my master's degree in English, with an emphasis in Teaching Writing and a minor in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. Since completing my degree in 1997, I have taught English Composition, Developmental Writing, and Reading Comprehension for both native and non-native English speakers at various community colleges in California, Illinois and Washington. I also have extensive experience working with Japanese students as I spent four years living and teaching English in Japan. Through the JET Program, I taught high school students for two years. I also worked as an Assistant Language Teacher from 2010 to 2011, teaching English to elementary and junior high school students (5th through 9th grades). Additionally, I operated my own English conversation school, in which I taught small group and private lessons for children and adults. For the last 6 years, I've been teaching at Shoreline Community College where I've taught English for academic purposes for international students, as well as ESL courses (all skills: reading, writing, grammar, listening/speaking) for students of all levels, from beginner to advanced. I have almost 15 years of experience teaching in college classrooms, as well as in smaller, private conversation schools and one on one tutoring. My specialty is in teaching writing, especially coherence, organization and development of ideas in an essay. My classes, whether face to face or online, have always been places where students can improve their skills in writing, reading and critical thinking through learner centered as well as collaborative methods. Often, I feel that my strength lies in establishing meaningful relationships with students that has helped many become more confident communicators and helped them on their college and career pathways. This year, I completed two certificates online: TESOL and Teaching ESL online. I have also been tutoring elementary and junior high school students in Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. I really enjoy tutoring, because it gives me the chance to work with students of all ages and backgrounds individually, to help them to reach their language goals and to become more confident in their studies. It's my goal to help students overcome their fears, and to become excellent communicators in English as well as confident writers.

I am an experienced tutor, editor, and manuscript reader with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from the University of Washington. In addition to my writing and literature background, I also have experience as a public speaking coach. I currently work for an online educational resource as a staff writer, creating lesson plans, study guides, quizzes, and worksheets designed for the K-12 language arts and literature curriculum and college writing courses. Education is my passion, and I enjoy helping students from all academic backgrounds develop as critical thinkers and writers. I believe that learning should be fun, engaging, and collaborative, and I work with students to develop an educational plan that works for them. While at UW, I tutored at the campus interdisciplinary writing center, helping students develop and refine academic papers, admissions essays, lab reports, dissertations, and personal creative projects. I worked with students at all stages of the writing process, from prewriting to final editing and refinement. In addition to working with students on individual projects, I also help students develop tools and strategies that they can apply to future assignments. I visualize writing skills as tools in a toolbox, and I believe that the best way to succeed as a writer is to have a variety of tools at your disposal.Outside of the more technical elements of reading, writing, and speaking, I also believe in helping students develop a positive relationship with education. Rather than just helping students absorb the material, I also strive to help them engage with the concepts. It can be difficult for students to connect classroom materials to their personal interests, resulting in frustration and a decline in motivation. However, I hope that by helping students make meaningful connections to the material, they not only find success in class, but also a passion for learning that will stay with them throughout their lives.
