I have always shared my knowledge with others because it has allowed me to grow. When I was enlisted in the Navy, we trained each other which allowed us to advance to greater levels of responsibilities. I greatly look forward to tutoring and mentoring students at Varsity Tutors. I am a diversified teacher with extensive teaching experience in a range of environments. In addition to tutoring mathematics and sciences, I also tutor applied physics/physics. At my present job, I am an instructor for the DOD in the radiological protection field. On days I am off work, I have been a substitute teacher for Hampton School District and during evening hours I have been a tutor for Huntington Learning Center. I am particularly interested in tutoring mathematics from high school through college level. My goal in teaching is to empower students to become leaders and have successful careers. My philosophy to tutoring promotes critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication skills and most importantly creativity. Because student/mentor relationships are extremely important to student development, I like to encourage students as early as elementary school to enjoy Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics so they will continue to peruse this interest at our Universities.

Reflecting on my educational experiences, I appreciate the immeasurable impact that teachers make on the lives of young people. I also realize that the skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom will be used by young people throughout life. Therefore, as a teacher, I hope to be a role model that cultivates in young people open minds, the knowledge and ability to look at the world critically, and the belief in one's capacity to make positive contributions to society. With this goal in mind, I am offering you tutoring with someone with experience in mathematics, standardized testing, and instruction.

I am a recent graduate (May 2015) of Liberty University of Lynchburg, VA with a Bachelor's Degree in English. I grew up in a Christian, military, homeschooling family, and I am a life-long lover of language, learning, and discovering the world through literature and science.Coming from a Home Schooled background myself, I have enjoyed numerous benefits from having individualized, one-on-one learning relationships with my teachers (in my case, my parents) all through my K-12 experience. The personalized instruction that I received has continued to be of great value to me as I have pursued and achieved high honors in my Bachelor's of Arts in English, and it is my hope that I might be able to provide those same advantages to any student that I have the privilege of assisting. My teaching experience largely comes from my hands-on practice in helping my younger siblings learn under a variety of subjects and curricula, as well as informal tutoring-style instruction for the benefit of classmates and acquaintances all through my college career. My instructional style emphasizes clear communication and adaptability, depending heavily upon student feedback for what works and what does not work, which I use to tailor my communication style and teaching approach to the individual's needs as best I can. My hope is to be able to apply my educational experience, my comfort with a wide variety of subjects, and my ability to learn and adapt quickly to benefit both students and parents as I seek to serve their needs.

As a child, I was usually dubbed "teachers helper' and loved to play school. I grew up as a military child and was raised all over the United States. Having to move every few years and adapt to new surroundings was a challenge for me. However, that challenge brought so many wonderful experiences that made me who I am today.I attended three elementary schools, two middle schools, and three high schools. This has allowed me to experience a variety of scholastic perspectives and I'm excited to implement my favorite practices from those schools. After high school, I attended Virginia State University and received a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. I also obtained a professional collegiate license with a preK-6 endorsement. My desire is to be able to teach all grade levels and eventually open my own school. I want to make a difference in education on a global scale and my passion for children and helping others is the driving force behind it.

During my senior year in high school, I spent every weekday shadowing a local dentist in urban North Carolina. Witnessing a waterproof camera capture an image of a prepped tooth so that a crown could be properly sculpted was an awesome experience for a high school student. Holding suction for an innovated procedure that took no more than two hours to complete, left me in awe. The direction that the practice of dentistry was going in fascinated me. I decided to pursue a degree in Biology at Winston Salem State University in North Carolina in preparation for a career in dentistry. It was during my undergraduate work that I became painfully aware of a societal population that was very different from what I knew. It was when I volunteered at the Samaritan Ministries that I saw how everyday required dental care eludes people who have no means of acquiring it. During my undergraduate studies, Samaritan Ministries afforded me opportunities to volunteer throughout my. The ministry operates a shelter which provides dinner, showers, spiritual uplifting, some medical care, and breakfast for homeless men in Winston Salem, NC. With each opportunity, a genuine sense of reward was felt with each sound of laughter and every glimmer of hope seen while fellowshipping. Concerns grew, however, in just how little oral hygiene was valued by the men who stay and facilitate the shelter. After several lengthy conversations with a few of them, I realized they had misconceptions and fears of dentists, which they had fostered from an early age. Deducing such, my career goals are dedicated to mission dentistry. Instead of taking dentistry abroad, opportunities to serve those in need right here in our communities will be my focus. Creating an outreach program that pulls together teams of dentists to educate youth and underrepresented populations about good dental practices will be the core of my methods. This is part of my initiative to change mindsets and increase access to care by curtailing fear of dentists in individuals who can grow into healthy adults, valuing the importance of oral hygiene. My strong desire to educate our youth and my diligence to bring change are all qualities that have made me successful thus far. A previous job tutoring students of different ages and mostly identifying with my fellow biology classmates has taught me how to be supportive and identify with others. I do not wallow in the problem but create solutions. Also, serving as a Legacy Leader during Ramdition, a weeklong orientation hosted by the students and faculty at Winston Salem State University in 2011 and 2012, taught me how to calmly deal with unexpected situations with poise and confidence. Collectively, the executive positions, jobs, and volunteerism have helped me to become a stronger leader and an efficient problem solver that is able to work well with others. These attributions along with a positive attitude are the least of what is offer my graduate school program and what I can offer to the students I tutor. I will work tirelessly to positively push my students toward achieving academic goals that will benefit us the remainder of their academic careers. I am confident in my capabilities as a successful tutor.

I'm a rising senior at Washington University in St. Louis, majoring in Systems Engineering and Computer Science with a minor in Architecture. I'm currently in Virginia for a summer internship at the Langley Research Center. I started tutoring informally in high school. In recent years, I have led a weekly Calculus III study group and serve as an engineering school tutor at my university. While I tutor a variety of subjects, my favorites to work with are math and computer science. I enjoy watching my students gain confidence in a subject they may have struggled with in the past and love the way tutoring forces me to examine a subject from a new perspective. In my time outside the classroom, I like to garden, read fantasy and science fiction, and bike around St. Louis.
