Algebra Tutor • +12 Subjects
Hi there! My name is Emily and I just graduated from Western Governors University with my Postbaccalaureate in Elementary Education and have my teaching license in Elementary Education from Utah and Illinois. I also have a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at Loyola University Chicago and took some Education Policy courses there as well. In between my degrees I worked as a self contained special education teaching assistant in a middle school and assisted students from 6th-8th grade. Before going back to receive my teaching license and as part of my program, I student taught math, ELA, and social studies in a 6th grade classroom during the beginning of 2021 as part of my degree. While I tutor and assist a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Math and passing the knowledge that I've gained through my educational experience down to my students. I love to balance work and fun throughout my time with my students by folding math games into my sessions. I strongly believe that education effects and is effected by many factors of life and work to help address these factors in order to provide students with quality education. In my spare time, I enjoy doing yoga, working out, spending time with my friends, and enjoying a good movie/watching TV.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Tutor • +4 Subjects
I am an electrical engineering Ph.D. student at Purdue University. My research interests cut across power and energy devices and systems. As an undergraduate EE student, I studied the impacts of FACTs devices on grids for my honor's thesis at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Since then, I have continued to study electric machine drive systems. Presently, I work on establishing electric machine and inverter models for transportation and industrial applications. As I advance in my degree, I also occupy teaching roles for an undergraduate machine lab course for which I instruct on the theory, operation, and simulation of electric machines. I am always eager to see that my students understand the basics or background of the subject I teach as well as the math behind the engineering problem being considered. Outside Electrical Engineering, I may be found baking, cooking, or reading archeological magazines; I find them to be great stress relievers.

I graduated from the University of Michigan with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemical Engineering. Later, I received an MBA from the University of Chicago with concentrations in finance and marketing. I have always enjoyed math since I was a young child and taken pride in being the fastest and most accurate in finishing tests and in-class work. My classmates often called me for homework help and I also tutored my three children through high school calculus. This included teaching 7th grade math to my daughter over a summer which enabled her to go from 6th grade math in 6th grade to 8th grade math in 7th grade. She went on to take honors math in high school and even tutored calculus to others in college!I entered college as a combined math and chemistry major but when the math became too theoretical and not enough practical (I have always loved solving word problems), I switched to chemical engineering which was more fun and applicable to real situations. As part of my nomination to Tau Beta Pi (engineering honorary fraternity), I volunteered to tutor math and chemistry to undergraduate students which I also enjoyed. Many of the positions I held during my 39-year career in the oil industry involved supply chain and refinery optimization or major capital investment analysis. These required an extensive understanding of linear programming, particularly how to evaluate the results and identify the most important areas for profit maximization. I also led the development and delivery of an intensive linear programming course to teach LP practitioners how to set up and interpret results from large scale (>2500 constraints) refinery economic models used to optimize global crude oil purchases (> 1 million barrels/day) and refinery operations.Whenever I tutor, no matter the age or level of math or economics, I seek to help the student to understand the fundamental concepts and then apply those by solving problems in a way that is fun and makes sense. Because knowledge of math and economics creates a solid foundation for understanding so many other subjects, whether in school or general living, it is very rewarding to me when the "light bulb turns on" as a student "gets it" and gains the confidence to tackle their next challenge.I have been a Junior Achievement volunteer for 15+ years teaching concepts of business, economics and capitalism to students of all ages (elementary school to college). I enjoy playing cards and board games of all types as well as creating activity-based games which teach concepts of business and economics in a fun and interesting way.

I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Integrative Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. I was accepted to Harvard Medical School but will be attending NYU Medical School in the fall on a full tuition scholarship I have worked as a tutor or teaching assistant of some kind for four of the last six years, most recently as a TA for organic chemistry 2. I am most excited about helping other students achieve their dreams of going to medical school by helping them study for the MCAT. Besides MCAT tutoring, my favorite subjects are chemistry, biology, and math which are all subjects I have tutored in before. I believe that every student can learn the material they hope to with the right guidance and effort. I hope that I can help students realize their full potential and grow in confidence as a learner. Outside of teaching, I like to perform in musicals, most recently I have been in local productions of Mamma Mia and Footloose, as well spend time with friends.

While I have worked with 1st through 3rd graders, I like working with all elementary students. My favorite subject is Math but I also love Reading. Helping students in Math and Reading are my strong areas. I like to have fun with learning and help students relate the subject matter to real life situations for better retention. At home I love spending time with my 3 boys. A few things we like to do are go for bike rides, read books and go to the park. I also love running and reading a good book.

I recently graduated from the University of Michigan--Ann Arbor with highest distinction (summa cum laude) in Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics. I spent much of my senior year working on an honors thesis studying the relationship between campaign finance laws and redistributive economic policies in the developed democracies (awarded highest honors). Through this experience and my classes and extracurricular activities in college and high school, I've learned that the best path to knowledge comes through doing, failing, and doing again until one succeeds. Consequently, I use my tutoring sessions to allow students to do just that. I focus my teaching around practice problems and examples which make students learn by doing and which allow me to elucidate the key concepts involved in the problem. My goal is for my students to not only be able to solve a problem but to understand a broader subject.I began tutoring while in high school. I worked for two years at my school's peer tutoring lab. In over 100 hours of tutoring, I advised students in Math (Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calculus), English, and Social Studies (AP Macro/Microeconomics, AP US/European History, AP US Government). In college, I tutored classmates in courses covering Philosophy, Economics, Political Science, Mathematics, and Statistics.I am open to working with students and parents in designing instruction that works for them-- whether that be on an ongoing or one-off basis. Any resources, suggestions, and comments are welcome.
