As a certified high school teacher, I have taught English Language Arts at an internationally renowned school of excellence for seven years, to over a thousand students! I hold a Bachelor of Education with an English major from the University of Alberta, in Canada. As a student, I was published and received various scholarships and academic distinctions--in part because of my love for the subject. I strive to inspire this love of ELA in my studentswhether or not it's your strong suit.I believe that anyone can come to appreciate these arts, and get better at them, too. The strategies come first, then understanding, then improvement and appreciation. One such strategy is called scaffolding: we'll work through the text together, and I'll explain what I'm seeing as we go along. Then we do it again, with a different text, and you explain what you're starting to notice. We can apply this approach to stories, poetry, Shakespeare, reading comprehension exams, or even your own writing: this particular kind of analysis is incredibly useful as an editing tool for essays or fiction.Teaching has been my dream since the age of five, and I already mentioned I love reading and writing (mostly fiction), but I also work out frequently, listen to music, dance, and craft. If it has paper or paint, I'm into it!

I HATED math in middle and high school! But when I got to college, I got to use math for all kinds of awesome projects. Designing boats! Controlling wind turbines! Shooting rockets underwater!I like to keep math rooted in the real world. I can teach you the basics of geometry, algebra, calculus and statistics, but more interestingly I can show you how to use what you learn to master the world around you. I'm not a professional teacher, I'm just a regular guy who learned all the tricks the hard, long way, and I want to share them with you!Conquering math feels awesome! It's not magic, it's hard work, but I'll help make it fun.

Hi, I am a Ucsd physics major and have plenty of experience working with children between being a tutor and having worked in childcare. I love both learning and teaching so I am very excited for these tutoring opportunities! My philosophy has a lot to do with bringing the subject matter to life for the student and making sure they gain enthusiasm and confidence with the subject as they learn and work through the material. The specific needs for every student of course change because every one has unique learning capabilities and different ways of approaching and understanding the subject.

I have a bachelor's degree in psychology from Southern Adventist University, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I worked as a research design, statistics, and general psychology tutor while earning this degree. I am currently in year two of a six year program to earn my PhD in Clinical Psychology. I tutor math, statistics, social sciences, and psychology. I enjoy tutoring math and statistics because I like trying to find new ways to help people understand sometimes complicated concepts. I find that things are easiest to learn if they can be applied to everyday kind of experiences, so I like to try and find ways to tie concepts into daily life. While I spend a lot of my time wrapped up in school, particularly in research and statistics, I also work part time as a therapy intern, and in my free time I love to ride bicycles. I am an avid cyclist, and I enjoy working on my small collection of bicycles when I can find the time.

I am a graduate from the Northwestern University School of Law and am in my fifth year of practicing law in California. I am originally from the Los Angeles area and attended UCLA for my undergraduate degree in political science. Since graduating law school, I worked at both a major law firm and a small law firm until I was appointed as an attorney for a federal judge (a.k.a. “law clerk” position). I primarily tutor clients for LSAT preparation. I scored in the 99th percentile when I took the LSAT exam, and have since refined my strategies that are crucial to a successful LSAT score. My ultimate goal is that my students will score even higher than I scored, and I look forward to observing the progress and success of each of my clients. In my free time, I like to spend time outdoors playing tennis, jogging, hiking, and meeting with friends. I also love to travel and appreciate the uniqueness that each city--much like each person--has to offer. I feel my easy going nature and curiosity for life will rub off on my clients, and possibly even help them enjoy the sometimes daunting experience of taking the LSAT.

I am a recent UCSD graduate with a degree in Human Biology and a minor in Health Care and Social Issues. Although Biology and the sciences are my specialty, I also enjoy teaching math and general test prep. I'm an outgoing, approachable person and capable of making learning enjoyable and efficient! I believe that putting in time to study will get the best results, and sometimes all you need is a little encouragement. My professional goal is to get a Masters in Genetic Counseling. In my spare time, I coach women's Ultimate Frisbee at UCSD and volunteer at the Palomar hospitals.

I graduated from Purdue University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in World Language Education with a focus in Spanish, as well as a minor in Anthropology. I am a very passionate and experienced tutor. During my time at Purdue, I worked with one of my professors on a program called "Ayuda y Aprende". We went to the local middle school and high school once a week and tutored the English Language Learner students. I absolutely loved those four years of tutoring. I have also taught Spanish classes and been a Spanish tutor. I love helping students reach their goals, and I believe every student has potential - we just have to find the best way to get there together using the student's preferred learning style. Outside of teaching and tutoring, I am very involved with music, hiking, and swimming. I love being outdoors and swam competitively growing up. All through my life, I have also played instruments and sung in choirs. I love learning through and listening to music. While my favorite tutoring subjects are Spanish and ESL/ELL, I also enjoy tutoring reading, writing, and public speaking.

Graduate of University of California, Berkeley, the premier public university of the U.S. and probably the world, I had studied history and English from some of the most renown historians and literature professors in academia. There I learned the art and rigor of research, reading, writing, and reflective thinking. This December, I will finish a MA at San Francisco State University in English composition, focusing in-depth on all types of writing and how to teach writing to K-12 and university students and business professionals. As a graduate student, I taught a university-level writing-intensive course to freshmen, the type of composition writing course that the AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition exams prepare high school students to study for and get college credit with a high score on the AP exam.I firmly believe that my passion and expertise in writing, literature, and history will help students reach their potential and improve their knowledge, skills, and their passion even if they are not yet engaged with the humanities and social sciences. Knowing many teachers and professors, I also firmly believe that students fall into the cracks of education frequently because of ill-prepared teachers, an overworked system that demands too much time from them without adequate pay and respect, and because most graduate schools of education do not adequately train teachers with evidence-based scholarship and give them the tools they need to succeed. I firmly believe that I and Varsity Tutors can fill this gap in education and in a student's learning by supplementing what schools cannot provide though teachers and professors are very passionate and heartfelt and genuinely care about their students. This is the unique role of the tutor.I can tutor most writing-related courses: AP English courses, AP History courses, SAT Reasoning (reading and writing), high school and university-level courses in writing, English, and history, and even business-related courses for professionals or business majors. In graduate school, I focused on grammar, style, and different types of genres: essays, business writing, grant writing, technical writing, long-form types of writing, and even creative writing. My interests outside my professional life still feed into and enrich my job. I am an aspiring writer in creative nonfiction, novels, short stories, and essays, and I am moving into technical writing with also a deep knowledge of technical subjects that are in high-demand in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. In the summer I teach physics to 8th graders and I worked at the Exploratorium, teaching science to visitors. I am unusual I believe for a humanities person in that I also took electives in physics, mathematics, and chemistry in college, which gives me the confidence and desire to move into technical writing.
