I am an experienced teacher and tutor, specializing in the natural sciences and math, including everything from theory and concepts to research methods and communication. I believe that any student who works hard can succeed in learning, and I'm committed to helping you find methods and practices that help you set and reach your goals. I know that what works for you may be different than what works for other students, and your goals might be different than what is expected from you at school. We'll work together to develop goals and find a way for you to meet them.My passion is helping students gain a better understanding of how the natural world works, and to enable them to ask questions, find answers, and share their findings. I believe that science education can and often should be driven by hands-on learning, not rote memorization, and my teaching style is strongly influenced by the scientific method.

I was educated at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. I received a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature and Secondary Education, with a minor in History. During my years of classroom teaching, I led an after-school credit recovery program for Social Studies students working on virtual classes, and in 2013 I worked as a tutor for SAT verbal/ACT English prep at a learning center in Bellevue. I tutor all subjects and test preps relating to English, Language Arts, Reading and Literature, and I enjoy tutoring for Social Studies and History. My personal interest in art and philosophy has led me to consider branching out to tutor those subjects as well. I most enjoy tutoring for SAT Verbal, because of the combination of test-taking strategies, practice with challenging vocabulary and grammatical rules, and textual analysis that the subject demands. My tutoring style is rigorous and focused, but I often make use of illustration and contemporary examples to illuminate concepts and make them memorable for the students I work with. Outside of teaching, I enjoy creating art and short stories, collecting rare films and music, cooking elaborate dishes, and being outdoors with my camera, searching for wildlife.

I am a recent graduate of Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a minor in Business Administration. I enjoy working with students and introducing them to beginning engineering concepts. Without such an influence in my life,I would have never discovered engineering. I have spent every summer for last nine years volunteering for youth camps and working with children ages 8-14.My passion lies in math and its importance in our daily lives. One of the major road bumps that students face is realizing when to ask for help. In my early years of college I realized this to be true. In mathematics especially, students tend to get frustrated and give up. I feel it is important to present mathematical concepts in a different ways, appealing to each student's individual learning style. I am excited to work with students and help them accomplish their academic goals!

Hello! My name is Matthew, and I am pursuing a degree in mathematics from Gonzaga University. After three years of background in civil engineering, I elected to modify my major to continue my interest in a career in math education. I am from Tacoma, Washington, and love the west side.I believe education and tutoring must be approached from a subjective perspective, working with every student as a unique and dynamic learner. I believe that the student is the root of education, and the role of a teacher or tutor is to supplement the student's drive to help them be as successful as they can be. I also understand that math, as well as many other academic subjects, are not easy to learn or work with at first, and that the challenge is something that, with dedication and the proper support framework, can always be overcome.I love seeing students get excited about new content or a new topic that suddenly clicks, and this reward of success of others is really the driving force in my pursuit of being an educator.I'm looking forward to working with you in the future, and hope to be a part of your educational journey!
