I have tutored independently several years while attaining my PhD and was also an adjunct faculty member at Northeastern University teaching undergraduate Physics.

I am a current PhD student in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Boston University. I moved to Boston in 2013 to pursue research with the Belfer Institute at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute after graduating with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in French from Allegheny College. Outside of my PhD work, I am an avid skier, runner, traveler and beach goer. My experience as a teacher spans from my responsibilities as a graduate teaching fellow in Instructional Biology at Boston University and my role as a research mentor of undergraduate students. I firmly believe that an effective tutor should be passionate, engaging and patient, as well as cognizant of the individual learning style of their student. I am a graduate of Amherst College. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in Community-Based Learning. I love tutoring students, and I have extensive experience working with students from middle school to high school. Last year I worked with Citizen Schools in Chelsea, MA, teaching 6th grade math and working with small groups of 5th grade English language learners on reading and phonics skills. This year I am working as a Spanish teacher and math and English tutor at Match Charter Public High School. I am excited to tutor a wide range of subjects, including SAT/ACT test prep, Writing/Reading, ESL, math (through Algebra I), and Spanish. When tutoring, I like to push my students to solve problems on their own with guidance from me only when necessary. I also like to have my students teach back concepts after I have explained them. The best test of whether a student has mastered a concept is if they can teach it back. I love helping students reach that 'lightbulb-above-the-head' moment! Some of my hobbies/interests outside of academics include knitting, photography, singing, traveling, reading, and learning Spanish.

I believe every student has his or her own learning needs. I would like to know more about my students, to provide a personalized learning experience and to help them achieve their dreams. I am a fourth year student at Harvard Medical School, and will start working as a pediatrician in July of 2016. However, if I had not decided to become a physician, I would have strongly considered becoming a teacher. Teaching is one of the most enjoyable activities I do, and I have taught in some capacity every year for the past ten years. I have taught subjects ranging from English to algebra, from physics to dance, and have taught students ranging in age from toddlers to adults. I have also provided advice on application essays, resumes, and interview strategies for Harvard College students applying to highly competitive scholarships. Each of these experiences has taught me how to communicate concepts in clear and engaging ways. For instance, while tutoring adolescents enrolled in the Boston-based Artists for Humanity program, I would often teach students whom I had never worked with before, and thus became adept at quickly discovering and implementing the strategies that worked best for a particular student (e.g., visual/tactile examples, analogies, and breaking down complex problems into smaller parts). While tutoring a janitorial staff member in preparation for the mathematics portion of her GED high school equivalency exam, I learned how to quickly identify the highest yield topics for a standardized exam and focus our efforts on those. Each of these experiences has been incredibly rewarding, and has inspired me to teach in some capacity throughout my career as a doctor.
