The importance of a solid mathematics education goes beyond just improved test scores. I use the word, "mathematics," frequently but, never until recently had I thought about the actual meaning of the word. The word, "mathematics," has at least two interesting literal definitions in two ancient languages. In Greek, the root of mathematics means, "learning." In Hebrew, it's root is "thinking." They tell us that mathematics gives us the critical ability to learn and think logically in any field of endeavor. It is more important than knowledge, which is so readily available on the Internet.I believe that all students have the capacity to understand mathematics under the right conditions. I reach my students by helping them develop a deeper understanding of important concepts so that the process has context and connections can be made between what has been learned with new ideas and skills recently introduced.I am a graduate of Boston University and the University of Massachusetts. I have training as a learning specialist and often work with students struggling with language based learning differences, ADHD, or executive function challenges. My work experience includes teaching math and English at both private schools as well as public schools. In addition, I have experience teaching within international schools in Europe and the Middle East. I have more than twenty years experience as a classroom based math teacher for grades 6-12. In addition, I have worked as an academic tutor and mentor for middle and high school students. Over the last few years, I have extended my practice and work with student athletes at Duke University as both a mentor and learning specialist.I have experience as a learning specialist with a focus on all middle school and high school math courses. In addition, I have worked as a college advisor and prepared students for both the SAT and ACT exams. While I do love teaching all things related to math, I also am passionate about teaching writing and high school English. In addition, I have a deep background tutoring US History and Civics at both the middle school and high school level. As a learning specialist, I believe it is essential to develop a strong partnership between myself and the student. The best way that I can succeed with my clients is to understand who they are as a person as well as who they are as a student. It is important that our relationship is based upon trust and a willingness to work together for common goals. I am always working towards the goal of helping my students become independent learners. I do not want my clients to use me as a crutch. I want them to see me as someone who will help them to walk on their own again. My ability to work with students across disciplines has been an added benefit for those families who choose to work with me. I care about what I do because I believe that all students can learn--they just need to be the right person using the right teaching strategy at the right moment for the magic to happen. In addition to my work as an educator, I am also a father and have been married for fifteen years. We love to travel and explore different parts of the world. My favorite place to spend time is in East Africa. When I am not traveling, I love to SCUBA dive. When I am not factoring equations, I can often be found in a corner reading a great mystery or political thriller. Otherwise, you can find me coaching my son's team at the nearest basketball courts or I can be found teaching lacrosse.I look forward to working with you soon!

Who I am: I graduated from Yale University in 2016 and I am currently on my gap year between college and medical school. Why I tutor: I've been tutoring other students since I was in high school, but I've been a tutee pretty much since I started public school when I was seven. Personalized tutoring was what helped me succeed in school, and I hope to be able to return the favor with Varsity Tutors.Who should hit me up: Anyone who needs help with test prep or writing! I hate taking standardized tests, but as a rising med student, I've been through A LOT of them, so I have a ton of strategies for how to tackle anything from the SAT to the MCAT. In contrast, I am passionate about writing, and would love to help you strengthen your writing skills.Miscellaneous info: I'm writing a book right now and I'm using my vague knowledge of music theory to teach myself to play guitar. I'll let you know how that goes.

My interest in teaching started when I was a teenager, when I was inspired by my wonderful high school biology teacher. Particularly, the class projects she used to illustrate concepts were inspiring, and got the entire class excited about the subject. This excitement about science lasted through my years studying undergraduate chemistry and biology, and into a master's degree in biotechnology. Most commonly, a science undergraduate pursues either graduate school, or some type of medical professional coursework, (doctors, nurses, or pharmacists). This was my original plan; to finish my undergraduate degree, and then go on to do a PhD. But after working as a teaching assistant during my master's degree, I realized how much I enjoyed working with my students and encouraging them to pursue and work hard in science.I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, College Park in biochemistry and cell biology in 2008. Immediately following this I started my Master's degree in Biotechnology at University of California, Irvine. The first year of my Master's mainly involved classroom instruction, as well as lab courses, during which my colleagues and I learned and practiced complex techniques required to conduct research. The second year of graduate school, I was able to pursue my own research and also work as a teaching assistant. I worked in Dr. Dana Aswad's biochemistry lab, analyzing and separating proteins from mouse brains. I also taught a discussion section in the introductory Genetics course. As a TA, my responsibilities were to review material covered in lecture, and hold one office hour every week for my students to come in and ask my assistance in understanding any of the difficult topics being covered in class. Because of how much I enjoyed teaching discussion, I went beyond what was expected of me, and extended my office hours, often conducting exam reviews. Sometimes there were students from other sections who would attend my office hour because of my accessibility as a teacher. This gave me immense satisfaction, and it became clear to me that a career as a high school teacher would be fitting for my personality and interests. As my master's program came to an end, I applied and received admission to a teacher credential program at UCI which I was planning to enter starting in the fall of 2010. It was during this time that I discovered I was pregnant. My husband was also a graduate student. Given this, and because of many other factors from childcare, to the desire to bond with my child I decided I needed to stay at home with my son, and put my career plans on hold.In 2011 spring I started tutoring, as it provided me with flexible hours, and enabled me to nurture my newborn. For 4 years I tutored chemistry, AP chemistry, Biology, Algebra, and some environmental science for high school students. Again I discovered the love I had for sparking scientific interest in a young student, and watching their faces light up as they understood a concept they had seen as difficult. Tutoring students was especially satisfying since I was able to cultivate a one-on-one rapport with the students, enabling me to cater my teaching to their needs. Some students were well prepared and knew exactly what they needed help with, while others needed me to comb through their notes and figure out what to cover during our sessions. Either way, I often succeeded in helping them improve in their grades and confidence in class. Tutoring has also helped me solidify my understanding of scientific concepts and has also enabled me to grasp the order of instruction chemistry, and biology at the high school level.I still plan to pursue a career in full time teaching, and attain my teacher credential. But for now, as I watch my own children grow up, tutoring is a wonderful way for me to do what I love and have the flexibility to be at home with my young children.

As a rising junior at UNC Chapel Hill majoring in English and minoring in Creative Writing, I have a lot of experience with reading and writing. In the past, I interned with Promising Pages, a non-profit organization that teaches underserved children how to read and get enthusiastic about books. I have also volunteered with Hands on Charlotte and Carrboro Elementary to tutor elementary school students. My experience teaching children is extensive, but I have worked with many age groups. I have consistently helped those around me (especially my older brothers) plan, write and edit countless essays and applications. I am eager to tutor new students and help them learn the ins and outs of reading and writing!
