I am a chemistry and environmental science student at the University of Virginia. In high school I completed the IB diploma program and took chemistry, math, english and history at the higher level. I tutor in Middle school math, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, IB Math (HL,SL and Studies), Calculus 1, Calculus 2, IB Chemistry (SL and HL), IB Environmental Systems and Societies, Ecology, and SAT math test prep. I have experience tutoring students in IB courses and non-IB courses. When I tutor I try to lead you to right answer by asking you questions to determine what you already know, clearing up misconceptions, and getting you to think critically about the material. This tutoring strategy is particularly effective for IB exams or application questions that test critical thinking in addition to your mastery of the subject matter.Outside of academics, I've dabbled in most sports. I currently play quidditch at UVA and in high school I played volleyball, basketball and soccer. I am also a fan of science fiction and fantasy novels.

I am a PhD student in Pharmacology at the University of Virginia. Previously, I attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota and earned a B.S in Biochemistry. It was during my undergraduate career that I became interested and passionate about teaching. I found the process of helping others understand material I loved, to be exhilarating. As a graduate student I had limited opportunities to pursue tutoring. As such, I have joined Varsity Tutoring and am SO excited for the chance to get back into teaching students AND learning from them.I am a scientist so, I love tutoring students in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, microbiology and many other topics. I also enjoy history. When I am not in school, you can find me cooking, reading or playing with the dog my boyfriend and I share. I absolutely love to travel and can never get enough of photography.I look forward to the chance to help out any students who are struggling in any scientific field, particularly in biology!!!

When I was in high school, a took a course in economics simply to fulfill a graduation requirement. I found myself unexpectedly enamored with the subject, and this is due in no small part to the incredible teacher I had for that class. I would like to instill that same excitement and passion for learning in students in any and all subjects. I am currently a third-year student at the University of Virginia pursuing a double major in Economics and Computer Science with a minor in Chinese. I have lots of experience helping students, especially in math (I was in the math honor society in high school) and economics (I often enjoy helping my friends and classmates better understand concepts they are struggling on in class). My favorite subject to teach is economics because I love the different ways of thinking it forces people to adopt when they begin learning it. My teaching philosophy is based in helping students recognize connections between different concepts, because I believe this helps contextualize the information, making it more applicable to the student and therefore easier to remember and apply to their future studies. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, playing trumpet, and parkour.

I am a current junior at the University of Virginia, and am working towards degrees in Foreign Affairs and Women and Gender Studies. I have worked closely with students in several capacities. For the past two years, I have been a part of an organization at the University of Virginia that matches up college and high school students for tutoring and mentoring. The focus of this organization is on forming long-term bonds between the students and on helping them navigate the college process, so I have lots of experience with my students writing and editing college essays and preparing for SATs. I also help them with career-building activities such as creating resumes, and I tutor them in high school subjects they might need help with. Recently, I was elected president of this organization, and I have been working with staff at UVA to turn the program into a class for the college students, to help hold them accountable and to integrate tutoring and mentoring skills into a syllabus.Last summer, I taught English and Math to children in India, and learned how hard but rewarding it is to teach the very basics of language and math. I was responsible for creating my own lesson plans and for managing the classroom with one or two other volunteers. I also worked in a low-income elementary school in the United States, where I assisted teachers by helping students individually- I worked with both third grade and pre-kindergarten. The previous summer, I helped at an afternoon reading program for recently homeless children, where I led lessons.I feel that the most important quality that a great tutor can have is accountability- by being consistently accountable to the student, showing up prepared and eager to spend time with them, you show them how much you care. Doing so forms a close bond, and allows the tutor to be much more effective. I think that it is also important to understand the place that the student is coming from- to be empathetic about problems they may be having either at home or with their schoolwork. I think tutoring at its most effective should not feel forced, but should be a partnership between tutor and student.I love working with students on all subjects, but my personal favorites tend to be English, and I enjoy working through and strengthening college essays- I always learn more about the students, which is incredibly rewarding. In my free time, I love to read, run, cook, and I enjoy art and all types of music.
