I am originally from the suburbs of St. Louis, MO, and I attended Rockhurst University for my undergraduate degree. I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in French & Education with a minor in English Literature. I am also currently working towards a Master of Arts in French at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. I am certified to teach French K-12 in the state of Missouri (and have the qualifications for Kansas). I enjoyed teaching at both the middle school and the high school level as part of my training. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored both writing and French. I am now substitute teaching at a French immersion school in the area, and I had fun teaching grades 2nd and 5th there over the summer. I am available to tutor English grammar, literature, writing, math up to Algebra 1, all levels of French, and test prep (including ACT). As someone with an appreciation for languages, I especially like tutoring English and French. Since I am a certified teacher, I am prepared to present information in a variety of ways to help my students with understanding. Additionally, I like to help my students take responsibility for their own learning during our sessions. Aside from teaching, I enjoy spending time with my roommates and our animals, watching shows and movies, going to sporting events, and taking advantage of the nice weather outdoors.

I am a first year economics major at Washington University in St. Louis. For high school, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from an American school in China. I am a native English speaker, but I have been learning Mandarin for my entire life as well. I took 9 AP tests throughout high school in addition to the ACT. I got a 5 on Calculus BC, macroeconomics, psychology, seminar, and statistics, and a 4 on microeconomics, chemistry, computer science A, and environmental science. I am passionate about helping others, and believe that a strong fundamental knowledge of the subject is the most important factor to improving overall grades and future learning.

I hold a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance (opera) from The University of Memphis. Since graduating in 2019, I have hit pause on my opera career in order to pursue other interests.I believe I have particular gift for working with children with unique learning needs. I actually began my tutoring career as a volunteer at the Refugee Empowerment Program in Memphis, TN, where I helped refugee and immigrant children (K-12) with homework and English literacy for nearly two years. During quarantine, I temporarily moved to California to help tutor my younger cousins (8 and13) who were struggling academically due to the new COVID-19 online schooling restrictions. My cousins also faced several unique learning challenges, including severe dyslexia and ADHD. These experiences have challenged me to be able to create engaging learning experiences tailored to each child's individual needs.I have struggled with severe anxiety most of my life. In academia, my anxiety manifested itself in that I would overwork myself to the point of complete exhaustion in order to make sure I got a perfect grade. Several life-altering experiences in my early twenties helped me understand that grades are not everything. They are important, yes, but certainly not worth losing sleep or mental wellness over. My goal, as an academic tutor, is to help kids enjoy learning. Learning does not stop after the test is over -- and it should not be a frustrating experience. I aim to not only facilitate the confident comprehension of subject material, but also to spark new ideas, interests, and a genuine enjoyment of learning in all my students.

I left my corporate career to pursue a career in education, because I found teaching to be my passion. No two students are ever alike, so I work hard to tailor my teaching style to the individual student. My first session I will listen to the student to hear what they need. Education is about the growth of the student, and I look forward to helping more students grow to be able to pursue their dreams and aspirations. I am here to provide any support you need.

Clinical Psychology Tutor • +24 Subjects
Hello! My name is David and it is very nice to meet you. I have been tutoring since high school and recently decided to contract my tutoring services through Varsity Tutors. Teaching and learning have always been huge parts of my life and upbringing. My mother has worked as a primary school classroom teacher and educator for my entire life; my twin brother worked as a classroom teacher as well and currently is studying to become a school psychologist; and my father, after retiring from the Air Force, has taught literature and rhetoric at a number of community colleges near his home in Ohio. Like my family, I am an extremely passionate and enthusiastic person who feels like their "best self" when they are in front of a classroom. I was a teaching assistant and tutor in the University of Nebraska - Omaha Department of Psychology for two years, while completing my graduate studies in psychology. As my professors and students will attest to, I consistently went above and beyond what was expected of me as an assistant, because I viewed the education of UNO's students as the most important part of my role as a graduate student. Statistics and research methods is one of my greatest passions, and I helped many students who had been previously struggling with these subjects developed an appreciation for them (even if it was a begrudging one!).Prior to my decision to tutor on the Varsity Tutors platform, I had worked as a professional statistician/analyst at the Missouri Institute of Mental Health, which is a department of the University of Missouri in St. Louis (this is also the same university I went to for my undergraduate studies). During my time at this job, I greatly expanded my knowledge of statistical analysis and computer programming. I consider myself a "power user" of the R programming language, as well as Server Query Language (SQL), which was necessary for my job given that I was working with very large databases containing public health data from Missouri Medicaid patients. Working in this setting gave me a much bigger appreciation for what is commonly referred to as "the big data problem", that is, the tradeoff between specificity and volume of data and the special schools of analysis that are necessary to circumvent this (such as Bayesian methods). Although I consider data analysis to be both one of my personal passions in addition to a marketable job skill, I did recently decide to resign from this position in order to pursue a career in social work. I am planning on enrolling in a Master's of Social Work (MSW) program in the near future, although that will likely not affect my availability for tutoring. In addition to my experiences as both a student of statistics and a professional statistician, I have a great number of hobbies and personal interests that I am also enthusiastic to share with my students. Music (specifically playing guitar) is my greatest passion, and although I am largely self-taught I am just as disciplined and rigorous in my musical studies as I am in my professional pursuits. In my previous experiences with teachers, professors, and tutors, I have always found that I learn best when I am working with someone who I respect on both a personal and professional love. Empathy, support, understanding, engagement and open communication are, in my view, not only ideal but essential for a student to truly learn. I have seen and experienced a lot in both my personal life and professional career, having worked in areas as diverse as psychiatric nursing (as a nurse's aide in a psychiatric hospital), social services (at a group home for adults with developmental disabilities), preschool phonics and arithmetic (at a Kumon Reading and Math Center), and many more. I consider myself an open-minded person who strives to be honest and candid in all of my interactions, no matter what the race, age, sex, gender identity, sexuality, health status, etc., of the person I am speaking with. I believe that those differences are all ultimately superficial, and that we as human beings are at our best when we are celebrating the very best accomplishments our species has claimed: language, mathematics, music and arts, etc.

I am graduate of Yale University where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. During my college years, I spent most of my time in the lab, researching in a behavioral neurosciences lab, and on the rugby pitch for the Yale Rugby Club. I then moved to St. Louis to attend medical school at Washington University in St. Louis. Though I initially entered medical school with the hopes to become a neurologist, I fell in love with orthopedic surgery and am currently heavily involved in research with the orthopedic hand department.Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I started private tutoring during my high school years and continued to tutor throughout college. My favorite subjects are Math and Science and I have much experience tutoring Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-calculus, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. During medical school, I had the great opportunity to lead the Physics portion of Washington University's MCAT class as well as be a teaching assistant for the medical school Gross Anatomy course. I know that there are many ways to learn the same material, and so with each of my students I try to tailor my teaching strategies to take advantage of their strengths.Outside of school, I love to cook, read and stay active by exercising, taking my dog out to the park and playing golf.
