For my entire life, I've had a passion for mathematics. My earliest memory of using mathematics was at the age of three, I used math in order to tell time on my analog watch. I was so proficient at telling time that my preschool teacher would have to take my watch away because I would time her when she said, "We'll move on in a few minutes." As my mathematics education advanced through the years, math became less of a study of algorithms and how to compute, and more of a study of elegance. In Calculus, we learn the sophistication of the exponential function and how its value at a point is also its slope, and how we can use this to our advantage in differential equations. My lifelong love of mathematics, as well as many students' dismal outlook on mathematics, in conjunction with the gracefulness of mathematics that I am so fortunate to have been taught, pushes me to teach mathematics to young men and women, so that they can at least get a taste of the elegance of mathematics.

I am a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, the City University of New York, Hunter College with a Master of Arts in Chemistry Education and the University of Illinois at Chicago with a Master in Business Administration, concentrating in Finance, Marketing and International Business. As my education may indicate I love to learn and I have a passion for education. I worked in the pharmaceutical / chemical industry for over 10 years with companies like Abbott, Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer. However, my passion for education led me to leave the pharmaceutical industry and pursue teaching. I am a certified Chemistry teacher in New York State and New Hampshire. I have taught Chemistry, Physics and Introductory Organic Chemistry in New York City at 2 different schools including Brooklyn Technical High School (one of the city’s top public institutions). I have a passion for Chemistry that shows when I am teaching, I love challenges and love to inspire interest in Science in other people. I served 4 years in the United States Navy on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier and have traveled to every continent with the exception of Antarctica. I have lived in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston. One thing my diverse experiences have taught me is how to approach concepts and ideas from many different directions. I helping others to understand in a way that makes sense to them personally, rather than trying the one size fits all approach to learning. I believe once you understand a concept you comprehend it in the same manner as others but the way different people get to that understanding is not always the same.

Hi! My name is Raz and I am a varsity tutor. This is my first year working as a varsity tutor and I am excited to meet and work with the brilliant young minds that make up our population. We are the future! YOU are the future!High school is an odd time for everybody, and sometimes we don't get the help we need to succeed in the manner in which works best for us. There have been times where I had questioned my own intelligence in high school because my approach to learning material was not consistent with the one being given to me. Nevertheless, there are strategies that can be used to learn and value education. I think that once someone has the ability to think, analyze and synthesize, success will come relatively easily and learning will actually be really fun. I promise that much. You are not correct answers, you are human. You are not failure. You just understand things in ways that best suit your experiences in life and your cognition. I want to be able to work with that, not change that, because that's the beauty of individual thought. If education is the road to success, then we have to make sure the vehicle that is driving us can develop fluency of the road. There are different kinds of vehicles, but they can all lead to the same path despite differences in speed and engines. I want to emphasize that despite these differences, everybody is capable. I am here to navigate, but ultimately, the student is the driver. You are the driver.

When I was in eighth grade, I told my French teacher that I was thinking of changing to studying Latin the next year, and she said that was a good idea because my spelling (of both French and English) was horrible. She was not alone in this assessment; in elementary school my percentage in the "Spelling" section of the statewide test approached the single digits. I have no doubt that she would be rather surprised to learn that now I am a PhD. student in Latin and Greek and have taught, numerous times, a college level class entirely on English vocabulary: "The Greek and Latin Roots of English". While I am happy that my spelling is now much better, I am much more happy that I can share my love of reading, writing and literature with my own students.I approach tutoring as an experienced college instructor, having taught hundreds of students at the City University of New York over the past four years. I seek to help students become confident autodidacts (self-learners) by connecting the critical tools of reading and writing to their own interests. I know that not all my students will relish the distinction between a direct object and indirect object with my intensity, but they all appreciate knowing how a solid understanding of the mechanics of grammar will make their essays even clearer and more persuasive.Knowledge of the grammar of another language is a great way to better understand English grammar. An experienced Latin teacher, I have taught both Latin grammar and a seminar on a close reading of Vergil's Aeneid in the original Latin. While teaching Latin, I ensure that the students have a firm grasp of the function of each word in every sentence, whether we are reading stories from the textbook Ecce Romani! or Ovid's Metamorophoses. I understand that the vocabulary and the numerous exceptions in Latin grammar can overwhelm students, but I also know that with patience and diligence every learner can approach and read great writers like Vergil and Ovid.In addition to language classes, I have also taught a number of literature classes, including "Greek and Roman Classics in Translation" and "Literature and Film". Essays play a large part in all my literature classes. I assigned, guided and graded hundreds of student essays in the past four years and as a result I am very comfortable sitting down with students to talk about all aspects of the writing process, ranging from sentence structure to the ordering of paragraphs.Another reason that I love talking to students about reading and writing is that I am those abilities everyday myself: I am currently writing my dissertation on Greek and Roman slavery. I have to read Greek and Roman authors in their original languages very closely, while also comparing my own ideas to those of contemporary scholars. A number of years ago I stumbled into my passion and then took advantage of the tools that various teachers gave me to write my own scholarship. I am excited to help students today have the tools to work on their own projects.

I'm prompt, patient, and come with plenty of experience! In addition to my education and administrative experience, I bring my personal passion for education and connecting with students, engaging parents, and working successfully with other educators and families, which help to make me a successful educator. In 2006 I worked a semester as a Teacher's Aid at The Christian Hope Academy on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio. The young men in our classroom ranged in age from 12 to 18 and were all from inner city neighborhoods. They called the academy their temporary home because of prior criminal offenses. I found myself working in a classroom that was very diverse: I had to learn how to work with Individual Education Plans, manage conflicts, and maintain focus in a difficult classroom. With each student at a different grade level, the curriculum had to be tailored for every individual. The one-on-one interaction needed to administer their curriculum led to improved grades and increased enthusiasm for some of the boys.I worked as a paraprofessional in a classroom for students with severe autism. The challenges that autistic students face can be unique, frustrating, and dangerous. Our limited understanding of the condition is an obstacle, but our students continue to learn when their minds are stimulated, and with confidence-building instruction. The teaching staff must always be mindful of students' individual needs, and above this, be patient. I believe it is important for an educator to have the utmost patience, especially when working with a student who has special challenges.Because effective communication is my specialty, I consistently use it as a mainstay in my approach to my work ethic. I worked as a tutor for an after-school program called College Bound for Kids for close to two years in Los Angeles, California. During this time, I met with each teacher individually and many parents to discuss their child's progress. I also took specific notes pertaining to the progress of nearly 100 students in order to ensure that the tutoring offered was providing the best help. I then relayed all feedback I received to my fellow tutoring staff, educators and families. We all worked together as a team, and as a result students excelled, parents were more aware, our staff was better prepared, and I felt like a part of that community. No other teaching experience has been as rewarding as that time in my life. During this time, my passion for working in a classroom setting was solidified. My goal is to continue going above and beyond as a Varsity Tutor.

I have a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. I then went on to receive my masters degree in Mathematics Education (5-12). Immediately after college I worked in a tutoring center at a community college, where I had the privilege of tutoring all levels of math (from pre-algebra to calculus). I now teach high school math, most recently Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-calculus. I strive to make math easy for students to understand. I use many different strategies to help students understand and I am extremely patient. I look forward to working with you!

Math is my favorite subject. No matter what career field someone is going into math matters. At the minimum, it helps us learn logic and different ways of thinking.I tutor because I like to share knowledge. I want to help others understand the value in learning various topics by connecting them to their real world applications. I've tutored math in the past and worked as a teaching assistant for a Calculus class while as an undergrad.I am a computer engineer, who works and is going to school for a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering. My research is focused on helping stroke survivors and arm amputees get better physical therapy results. I have 2 B.S. degrees and an M.S.For fun I do martial arts, read, and play pub trivia and board games with friends. I am an avid stamp collector as well. I also (sort of) like to travel. Hate the travel part, but enjoy myself once I get there :). Outside of the US, I have been to Portugal, Italy, Rep. of Macedonia, Scotland, British Columbia, Canada and Ireland, so far.

Over my years pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy at the University at Albany, SUNY and a B.S. in Business Administration at Merrimack College, teaching has become a natural expression of who I am. While pursuing my Ph.D., I taught business statistics for two years at Plymouth State University, taught public policy at the University at Albany, SUNY, and was the Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at Merrimack College. During this time as a professor and coach, I received a number of accolades, including exceptional teaching evaluations and two NE-10 Coach of the Year awards. While pursuing my B.S., I worked for the Math Center at Merrimack College tutoring other students in various subject areas, including Discrete Mathematics, Finite Mathematics, Business Mathematics, Business Calculus, Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III, Linear Algebra, Basic Statistics, Probability and Statistics I, Probability and Statistics II, and Multivariate Analysis. During my three years working at the Math Center, I attended a number of tutor trainings for CRLA certification and skill development. After becoming a level three CRLA certified tutor, I was given the responsibility to teach my colleagues skills and techniques for effective tutoring.Throughout my experience as a tutor, teacher, and coach, what has made this work rewarding is having the opportunity to watch students accomplish their goals and gain confidence in their own abilities. To help achieve these mutual rewards, my teaching style enhances engagement and learning by: 1) empowering students to become more independent learners; 2) adapting to students' learning-styles, and 3) creating a positive and supportive learning environment. While I am a life-long learner who loves to teach a number of subject areas, my favorite area to tutor is in mathematics. Outside of teaching, tutoring, and coaching, my favorite activities include soccer, tennis, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, and various other types of water sports.

Since I was a small child, I knew that I wanted to help people. When I am old and fragile, I want to be able to look back on my life and smile about what I have accomplished. Joining the PhD program for Kinesiology at Wayne State University greatly supports me in this mission. As part of my education, I have had the privilege of being immersed in disability culture; this prepared me to pursue my Doctoral Degree in Kinesiology in Education. My interest in becoming an educator dates back to my early elementary years. As with most students, I had experiences with instructors that varied between the good, the bad and the ugly. When my experiences were good, I excelled, took risks, learn, and I would push myself to master a skill. With the bad instances, I would shy away and try not to be noticed by the teacher. I quietly attempted to look busy. The ugly experiences were where I would become embarrassed and completely disengage with a lesson and from an instructor. Even at a young age, I saw which one of these people I would want to model. So the seed was planted in my head to become not just an educator, but a person to inspire others to reach for the stars and strive to achieve their full potential. In my free time I enjoy basketball and teaching.
