I found myself working in a classroom that was very diverse: I had to learn how to work with Individual Education Plans, manage conflicts, and maintain focus in a difficult classroom. With each student at a different grade level, the curriculum had to be tailored for every individual. The one-on-one interaction needed to administer their curriculum led to improved grades and increased enthusiasm for some of the boys.I worked as a paraprofessional in a classroom for students with severe autism. The challenges that autistic students face can be unique, frustrating, and dangerous. Our limited understanding of the condition is an obstacle, but our students continue to learn when their minds are stimulated, and with confidence-building instruction. The teaching staff must always be mindful of students' individual needs, and above this, be patient. I believe it is important for an educator to have the utmost patience, especially when working with a student who has special challenges.Because effective communication is my specialty, I consistently use it as a mainstay in my approach to my work ethic. I worked as a tutor for an after-school program called College Bound for Kids for close to two years in Los Angeles, California. During this time, I met with each teacher individually and many parents to discuss their child's progress. I also took specific notes pertaining to the progress of nearly 100 students in order to ensure that the tutoring offered was providing the best help. I then relayed all feedback I received to my fellow tutoring staff, educators and families. We all worked together as a team, and as a result students excelled, parents were more aware, our staff was better prepared, and I felt like a part of that community. No other teaching experience has been as rewarding as that time in my life. During this time, my passion for working in a classroom setting was solidified. For my entire life, I've had a passion for mathematics. My earliest memory of using mathematics was at the age of three, I used math in order to tell time on my analog watch. I was so proficient at telling time that my preschool teacher would have to take my watch away because I would time her when she said, "We'll move on in a few minutes." As my mathematics education advanced through the years, math became less of a study of algorithms and how to compute, and more of a study of elegance. In Calculus, we learn the sophistication of the exponential function and how its value at a point is also its slope, and how we can use this to our advantage in differential equations. My lifelong love of mathematics, as well as many students' dismal outlook on mathematics, in conjunction with the gracefulness of mathematics that I am so fortunate to have been taught, pushes me to teach mathematics to young men and women, so that they can at least get a taste of the elegance of mathematics.

Since I was a small child, I knew that I wanted to help people. When I am old and fragile, I want to be able to look back on my life and smile about what I have accomplished. Joining the PhD program for Kinesiology at Wayne State University greatly supports me in this mission. As part of my education, I have had the privilege of being immersed in disability culture; this prepared me to pursue my Doctoral Degree in Kinesiology in Education.My interest in becoming an educator dates back to my early elementary years. As with most students, I had experiences with instructors that varied between the good, the bad and the ugly. When my experiences were good, I excelled, took risks, learn, and I would push myself to master a skill. With the bad instances, I would shy away and try not to be noticed by the teacher. I quietly attempted to look busy. The ugly experiences were where I would become embarrassed and completely disengage with a lesson and from an instructor. Even at a young age, I saw which one of these people I would want to model. So the seed was planted in my head to become not just an educator, but a person to inspire others to reach for the stars and strive to achieve their full potential. In my free time I enjoy basketball and teaching.

I think that once someone has the ability to think, analyze and synthesize, success will come relatively easily and learning will actually be really fun.
