I am a junior attending Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. I am working toward earning my Bachelor of Arts in Natural Sciences, with concentrations in Public Health and Biology, while minoring in Music. After college, I plan on attending nursing school and becoming a Nurse Practitioner.I started tutoring students when I was in high school, in subjects ranging from Algebra to Writing to Music to German. When I left Germany and came to the United States for college, I became certified to tutor Calculus I and the German language at Johns Hopkins University through their student-to-student tutoring service, "The Learning Den."Tutoring has been such a joy of mine because of the students I've been able to work with. Working together to get through a tough concept or problem is made totally worthwhile when the student then says, "Ok, let me do this next one on my own. I've got this." That's when I know knowledge has truly been shared, and that both the student and I have done our jobs.When I'm not tutoring, I love to be outside! You can find me either running on the beach in the summer or snowboarding on the slopes in the winter. On rainy days, I like to stay inside to watch movies or draw pastel or play with my cat and dog.

As a graduate assistant, I’ve had the opportunity to teach labs in anatomy, exercise testing and prescription for healthy and clinical populations, strength and conditioning, and exercise physiology. I am proficient in the use of common laboratory testing devices such as the metabolic cart, force plate, lactate analysis, and EKG. As a research investigator, I have had the opportunity to work on projects relating to cardiology, sports psychology, and human performance under the tutelage of Dr. Darren T. Beck and Dr. Disa L. Hafield. I became proficient in the use of Finapres technology to measure stroke volume, heart rate, and blood pressure as a member of Dr. Beck’s research team. We studied the effect NormaTec compression boots have on acute cardiovascular changes, due to the restriction of blood flow to the legs. NormaTec boots are of interest to exercise physiologists because of their potential to decrease recovery time and enhance performance. Under the mentorship of Dr. Hatfield, I investigated the relationship between sleep, burnout, and performance in collegiate female runners. I saw this as an opportunity to investigate the psychological contributions to performance. The results of this analysis were presented at the New England ACSM as part of the graduate student award competition. Under Dr. Hatfield, my master’s thesis is a joint study with the University of Rhode Island’s nutrition department in the use of caffeine as an ergogenic aide for recreationally weight-trained males. Specifically, the effect of caffeine on power production assessed via force plate and Tendo-Unit.

From the minute I was able to talk, I have always been eager to ask questions about the past. My grandfather spent hours every week teaching me about history, and I have learned from him a love for the topic. Through his love for history, I have also developed a passion for teaching history to the next generation. I approach tutoring with excitement and energy, because I truly love what I do and care about what I teach. My main teaching philosophy is that students learn best through positive reinforcement, consistent review, and utilizing many different strategies and techniques to help students gain content mastery. I am a proponent of Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences, which says that different students process data in different ways. I personalize my approach to students based on how I believe they will best achieve content mastery. I graduated with my Bachelors degree in Secondary Education at the University of South Florida and I am currently working on my Masters Degree, with an anticipated graduation date of August, 2024. My husband and I have 2 sets of twin boys, ages 17 and 13. All of them have been homeschooled, although the older set is now being educated through other means. One has special needs and attends a private school specializing in educating and caring for autistic children with learning disabilities. The other has graduated and plans to attend Johnson University next fall, majoring in Nonprofit Administration.In addition to educating my own children, I have also taught music classes to 1st-2nd and 3rd-5th grades at the Learning Tree Co-op in Springdale, OH.My initial career path while in high school was to be a concert pianist. But that track was derailed when extended hours of constant playing created massive physical problems for my hands. Nevertheless, I enrolled at Cincinnati Christian University as a piano major and had the first of three hand surgeries over Christmas break my freshman year. I took on part-time teaching positions in music studios around the Cincinnati area beginning in my sophomore year. It was those teaching experiences that helped to segue my initial goal of stage performance to a passion for piano pedagogy and a desire to prevent other students from having to endure the same physical pain brought on by poor technique and misuse.Upon graduating from CCU, I enrolled in the Master of Music program at East Carolina University where my pedagogical studies focused on injury-preventative techniques for beginning and intermediate piano students. Following graduation, I opened my own private studio and became heavily involved with the North Carolina Music Teachers Association, serving as Vice President of the Greenville (NC) chapter.After 17 years of private studio teaching, I accepted a position at Cincinnati Christian University as Adjunct Professor of Piano in 2011. One of my favorite aspects of the job was having the opportunity to mentor students, both academically and in future planning. I resigned from the position in May 2016 due to degree changes and the dissolution of my job description.In my spare time, I enjoy playing piano, fishing, crocheting, cooking, learning about essential oils, and watching comedy TV and movies.
