After obtaining my Math degree from the University of Houston, I decided to go into teaching. I have taught high school math for 5 years in Texas and 5 years in California. Additionally, I owned my own tutoring service in New Jersey, and have worked for several companies as a tutor. I especially love being a math tutor (even more than being a teacher) because I've found that working with a student one-on-one accomplishes so much! I love building confidence and ability, and always want to make the student feel comfortable communicating their concerns with me! I also love tutoring ESL, as I have lived in Spanish speaking countries and have a love of languages.

I am a Junior at the University of Washington. I am studying to receive a major in Geography with a focus on data science along with a minor in Informatics and Music. I am passionate about music and computer science. I have 10 years of music experience and am a cellist in the University of Washington Symphony Orchestra. I have also taken a course in teaching music along with 3 years of experience teaching private lessons to kids ages elementary school to middle school ranging in prior experience. Also at the University of Washington, I have taken several computer science courses ranging from java programming to website development. I find joy in sharing my knowledge and passion for these topics with others and wish to get students excited about the material. As a teacher I believe that creating a fun and safe environment for students to learn gives them the opportunity to grow the most. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy making music and coding fun projects. I also enjoy picking up new skills and trying new things such as wood burning and swing dancing.

I earned my Bachelor's of Arts in History and later my Master's of Arts in Teaching Social Studies from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Since then, I have expanded from classroom teaching into alternative education, curriculum design, career coaching, youth leadership development, and behavioral health. From leading two-week-long summer programs touring colleges on board the schooner Amistad, to helping students identify personal strengths to take into job interviews as a career coach at Portland YouthBuilders, to creating multimedia curricula bringing historical activists to life, I've always held critical thinking as the cornerstone of my educational practice. I've had tremendous success with students by helping them identify their skills and challenges, make personal, individualized, and achievable goals, and develop their own voices. I have experience working with a wide variety of subjects but particularly enjoy teaching History, Social Studies, and Writing. I work hard to adapt my materials and style to best support each student and their individual needs and aspirations.

Dr. Jolan Wu graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Biology. She worked during college to put herself through school, so she understands the challenges of learning to multitask education with life's demands. After college, she went on to earn a full scholarship at Western University of Health Sciences, where she pursued graduate studies in the biomedical sciences, with a focus on biochemical pathways implicated in long term potentiation and memory formation. This is where she learned to master learning strategies and achieved Dean's List for the full consecutive two years for her M.S. degree. She went on to excelling during medical school and on her boards, becoming an NIH award recipient, and a general surgery resident at the University of Washington. Now, as she prioritizes motherhood and family, she is taking a break from her training to focus on transferring to a program more local to her home community, where she can find better balance between her career and family.Jolan has extensive experience helping students succeed in their USMLE and COMLEX goals. Not only is she a subject expert, but she also teaches general learning and memory strategies effective for long-term retention. Her students benefit highly from her personalized tutoring and mentorship approach, and she subscribes to the idea of "...teach someone to fish and you feed them for life". She is passionate and confident that she can help you achieve your goals, wherever your residency endeavors lie.Outside of her medical journey, she has a passion for figure skating and has continued to work as an instructor for youth ice skating programs.
