One quote that defines who I am would be, A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others by Ayn Rand. This quote defines who I am because the person that I have become is motivated by the will that I can achieve anything if I put my mind to it. If theres a wil...

I love Math! I love that there is a concrete answer to get to. There may be different ways to get there, but there is usually only one answer. Trained as an Engineer, I am a creative problem solver, which comes in handy with my 4 year old twins! I love to craft and decorate my home. My goal this year is to see more of Florida, where I live.

I have taught high school and college math since 1992. I've also tutored private students during most of that time. I love to work with students who struggle or don't like math very much. I like to go through things very slowly and not skip steps. I help students build confidence by breaking topics into small sections and rewarding each achievement.I love math, but I understand that many people don't. My main concern is getting students through the math needed to achieve their goals. Too often, math is a barrier to a great career. Some students need to build a base for more math in the future, but many students just need to survive so that they can get a degree or certification.I have written the content for three online college-level textbooks in algebra, finite math, and math for liberal arts. I am currently completing a test review manual for the TEAS V. The TEAS V is used as an entrance exam for many nursing schools. It covers math, science (anatomy, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and physiology), English grammar, and reading comprehension, The book is scheduled to be published in December 2015. I have worked as a test scorer for the GRE, California Standards Test, and the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE).

I graduated from University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. I also have a Juris Doctor from Florida A&M University College of Law. I began tutoring students in high school and have continued to do so since then, helping students ranging from middle school to law school. Though my tutoring subjects cover a broad spectrum, my favorite subject to cover is History because I'm fascinated by how analysis of a set of facts can change the whole story without changing those facts. With all my students, I believe if I'm doing a great job, then eventually I won't be needed. That is to say that I tutor in a way that promotes confidence and self-sufficiency over time. In my experience, I have found that the most successful students are not the ones that are taught the answers, but rather the ones that are taught the skills to get to the answers. This is best demonstrated in Essay Writing, where I may start with a student that is overwhelmed by simply choosing a topic and see that student get to a point where help is wanted only after he or she has finished the first draft. I am a firm believer that every student can learn as long as an interest is taken by the instructor. When an instructor cares, they want to make the subject enthralling and worth understanding. After that first "a-ha" moment every student gets, learning becomes exciting for them. When I am not working, I spend my spare time enjoying the beach, camping, reading, traveling, playing music, homebrewing (science in action!), and being part of some amazing fandoms.

As a naturalized citizen of the United States of America, I am very passionate about helping student improve their communication skills both in Spanish and English. When I came to the US from Barranquilla, Colombia, I didn't want to learn English; so, I became a truck driver 18-wheleer in Miami, Florida. Even though I was doing great, after four years driving trucks, I decided to relocate to Palm Bay, Florida, and join the United States Army as a paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne Division. During my active-duty time in the US Army, I earned my Associate in Arts degree at Campbell University in North Carolina. Then, I went back to Palm Bay to pursue my bachelor's degree in Communication at Florida Institute of Technology, where I graduated magna cum laude in 2003.After graduating in Florida Tech as a communicator, I started writing for the local daily newspaper FLORIDA TODAY in the business section. While working there as an intern, I started my own bilingual newspaper AL DIA TODAY. Then, 9 years later, I graduated with my master's degree in Global Strategic Communication in 2013, also at Florida Tech. The same year, I founded the Brevard Hispanic Center, a non-profit organization under the 501 c 3 code of the IRS that helps individuals and families in areas of education, health, family issues, immigration, and economic empowerment. At the Brevard Hispanic Center, I created the English Language Integration Program (ELI Program) to help individuals that went to school in other countries while improving their level of English, so they could work in the US in their careers.Currently, I am pursuing my PhD in Text and Technology at the University of Central Florida. I continue publishing the bilingual newspaper AL DIA TODAY and providing digital marketing solutions to businesses and organizations. Besides tutoring at Varsity Tutors, I serve my community through the Brevard Hispanic Center.
