Tutoring is my passion. I like to help young people understand subjects that they have trouble with and help them realize that it's possible to succeed in them. I have a lot of patience and I am always happy to answer questions. I realize each student is in a different place in their math path and each student learns differently so I do my best to treat each person like an individual. I have over 10 years of experience in teaching and tutoring as well as a California teaching credential.

I learned economics in business school at Duquesne University and subsequently worked in wholesale banking and investment banking. My approach to teaching economics is that you cannot live in the US and not have a basic understanding of economics. The terminology and the drawing of graphs may elude you, but the concepts are embedded in you. I use aspects of my students lives and their interests to create meaning. Economics can be fun and economics can be exciting if you have the right instructor

I earned my bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in computer science. I have worked at the NIH and at Caltech as a bioinformatics researcher, and I am starting graduate school this fall. My experiences as a student and scientist help me explain concepts and work through problems in a clear and engaging manner. I love teaching, and strive to make each personalized lesson enjoyable and productive. In addition to math and science, I can teach the skills and strategies students need to reach their goals on the ACT, GRE, or AP tests. I also enjoy working with elementary age students to increase reading and math proficiencies.

I am a Los Angeles area native, and hold a JD from the University of Virginia School of Law, as well as a B.A. in English from Tulane University in New Orleans. I have been a California licensed attorney since December of 2011, and currently practice full-time as a Law Clerk for four Los Angeles Superior Court Judges.Since I finished my undergraduate degree, I have tutored many high school and college students in essay writing and test prep. In particular, I love helping people improve their writing. While there are undoubtedly many great tutors in the area, I believe I bring a unique perspective with my legal writing experience. With this background, I strive to help students not only improve their academic performance in the short term, but also develop the skills they will need in their professional careers.I am available to tutor on weekday afternoons and evenings in and around the Pasadena area where I live with my wife and two children. I also may be able to tutor students near the Downtown area, where I work.Thank you for reading my profile. I hope to work with you in the future!

I graduated from Rice University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Post-graduation, I was a Consultant in Deloitte Consulting's Strategy & Operations practice for four years. Most recently I decided to change my career and am currently pursuing a MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller.I am most interested in tutoring math (middle school, high school, SAT/ACT, GRE, AP Statistics) for many reasons. My affinity for math dates back to my childhood - I've always been intrigued by it. Because of this interest, I participated in various math competitions and excelled in classes and on standardized tests. I wanted to share my passion with others and so started tutoring peers as early as middle school. Although I graduated from Rice with a BA in Psychology, my time with math did not end there. I took Differential Equations and various statistics courses as electives (for fun)!My tutoring experience includes informal tutoring of peers throughout my lifetime, private tutoring of high school students during college, teaching at a private high school during college, and mentoring peers and new hires during my time with Deloitte. As people think differently, I believe in adapting my teaching style to fit each student. Because of my varied professional background, I am able to explain problems from different angles; this allows students to choose the method they personally find most logical. In my spare time, I enjoy rock climbing, hiking, swing dancing, interesting discussions, and traveling (I have been to over 20 different countries in the last 5 years)!

AP English Language and Composition Tutor • +17 Subjects

For the last 10 years as a youth mentor I have worked to help students succeed. While mentoring has meant life coaching, counseling and college visits, it has also included a substantial amount of academic tutoring. I have a passion for people and a strong belief in the power of words: written, spoken, and sung! I especially enjoy helping students connect with their passions and then translate that passion to the page. I also have quite a bit of recent experience with the GRE. I believe that taking the GRE is a skill - and that means that with practice you can get better at it! I would love to share specific strategies that helped me and others succeed. I have a BA in Linguistics, two masters degrees in religious studies, and am currently completing a PhD in Theology and Culture at Fuller Seminary. I am a self-confessed nerd (I once presented a paper at a conference on The Hobbit). I am a huge fan of fitness and ran a free CrossFit "garage gym" with over 20 members for several years. I play the guitar and attempt the piano. I enjoy traveling and recently hiked the Incan Trail to Machu Picchu. I can tutor in a broad range of subjects and would enjoy connecting to see how I can help you attain your personal goals!

ACT English Tutor • +59 Subjects

I love tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to help others enjoy the experience of learning as much as I do. Whether we are editing an essay or reviewing for an exam, I bring a natural passion and energy to my tutoring sessions that inspires my students to discover their own paths towards understanding. By creating a safe environment in which students are encouraged to develop their own critical faculties and to ask the question of "why?", I hope to equip all my clients with a thorough understanding that allows them to achieve mastery over their desired subject matter. After receiving my Bachelor's in English Writing from Azusa Pacific University and my Master's in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary, the bulk of my tutoring experience comes from my work as a Consultant for Fuller's Writing Center. Working as a Consultant for Fuller's Writing Center has given me extensive experience in providing writing and editing instruction to graduate students, which I have also put to use as I have continued to work with my own personal high school and college-level clients. While I enjoy providing instruction for a variety of subjects ranging from history to psychology, I am especially interested in the process of helping others as they learn how to express their views and opinions through the written word. I believe writing is a useful skill in just about any walk of life, and I consider it my privilege and purpose to help others discover their written voice. When I am not working with my wonderful clients, you might find me reading a dusty old novel, watching some sports, playing too many video games, or out walking with my dog, Hans.

10th Grade Reading Tutor • +47 Subjects

I am a graduate of Providence Christian College, a small liberal arts school in Pasadena. I received my bachelor's in liberal arts with English and history concentrations. In college, I worked in our Academic Resource Center editing essays and leading study groups for struggling students. After college, I began tutoring language arts for elementary and middle school students. I help students improve their reading comprehension, phonetics, and grammar. My favorite subjects to tutor are language arts and American literature. Knowledge is power, as the saying goes, and knowledge comes through reading and writing. Literacy is the path to liberty, independence, and fulfillment and I want to help students succeed in their reading and writing to empower them to freedom. One of my favorite historical books is The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglas. In his autobiography, Douglas, a former slave, describes how his masters kept him enslaved by making it illegal for slaves to learn to read and write. However, one of Douglas' kinder mistresses educated him, and this power enabled him to run away and eventually write his radical memoir that led to the abolition of slavery in America.Learning begins with questioning, so I ask my students lots of questions to invoke discussion that leads them to the right answers. I learn what my students are interested in, and I shape my lesson plans around their interests. I communicate with my students to make sure they are understanding and they feel like we are moving toward their goals. All people are smart and able, so even when students seem disinterested, I hold them to a high expectation. I care about my students as human beings in the pursuit of their dreams which means I will do my best always to teach them and respect their time. I am very patient, encouraging, and kind to my students because that is the environment I need when I am learning. In my spare time I enjoy hanging out with my friends, reading novels, creative writing, taking walks around the Rosebowl, singing, watching sunsets from the San Gabriel mountains, and eating breakfast in the morning sun with a strong cup of coffee.
