Like most members of my family, I grew up believing myself to be incapable of understanding math and science concepts, and I was a very underachieving high school student. After owning and operating a successful residential painting business for many years, I returned to school at the age of 30 to study music theory. While fulfilling the degree requirements, I found that I had been mistaken, and I was in fact capable of achieving a level of academic success which I had never believed possible. I have since graduated from Skagit Valley College with an AA in Music and an AA in art, and from the University of Washington with a BS in Electrical Engineering. While tutoring at Skagit Valley College, I received an award for excellence in tutoring in recognition of my dedication to my students. I love tutoring, and I'm always happy to find opportunities to encourage and inspire others to believe in themselves and achieve beyond their own expectations.

AP Biology Tutor • +10 Subjects
I am currently a rising senior at Carnegie Mellon University, majoring in Biological Chemistry, and minoring in Cognitive Neuroscience and Chinese Studies. I also conduct research in inorganic chemistry with focus in photochemistry with environmental applications. I'm excited to help students in chemistry or biology, or with general science, to both strengthen their performance and to encourage them to develop a curiosity for applying science to their own life. I have been a volunteer tutor and teaching assistant for elementary math and reading, as well as elementary, middle, and high school science. I have taken and excelled in AP courses, college courses, and graduate level chemistry courses and hope to prepare students for similar success by explaining and reviewing material, introducing study and testing strategies, and getting at the "why" behind important concepts. Outside of science, I love music including singing, dancing, and instruments and enjoy crafts, learning Chinese, and doing crossword puzzles.

I am currently a sophomore pursuing a bachelor's degree in computer science at the University of Washington, Seattle. I have volunteered to teach elementary to middle school children through two different non-profit organizations. One of the non-profit organizations puts a focus on teaching elementary students subjects within the STEM field to help them advance in those subjects. I also helped to develop a curriculum to start teaching programming at this organization using scratch for beginner levels and python for advanced levels. I am able to tutor a wide range of subjects that include elementary school, elementary school math, algebra, and various programming languages such as Python, Java, Scratch and even AP Computer Science. I find that having the right resources and guidance is extremely important in motivating students to keep learning and persevering through the challenging material that they encounter. It not only helps them better understand the class, but also makes it so that the material they are learning is still fun and interesting. By tutoring, I get the opportunity to work with wonderful students and help them advance in their education.

I am a positive, energetic, and upbeat person by nature. I love teaching others and learning more about the world around me. I attended Beloit College (Go Bucs!) in Beloit, Wisconsin where I received my BA in History and submitted an Honors Thesis. The year after graduation I spent teaching English to university students in Kaifeng, China. I then went back to school and got my Masters in Communication from Hawaii Pacific University. While pursuing my Masters I was a Math and Reading tutor, and I worked for my university's magazine, writing and editing articles for quarterly publications.I tutor SAT, History, Math, Reading, Writing, English Literature. History is definitely the subject I enjoy tutoring the most, as it was my major and a continued passion of mine. I'm even in the process of writing a historical novel!I grew up in Hawaii, and I love being outdoors with my wife and two dogs. We all live in Spokane, WA now, where the scenery is beautiful and there's an always adventure awaiting around every tree and mountain. In my free time I enjoy reading, writing, playing soccer and tennis, and just relaxing with my family.

Basic Computer Literacy Tutor • +33 Subjects
I have been working as a professional software engineer for over 10 years and I have taught computer science classes at a local community college for over 5 years. I have plenty of experience and strive to provide valuable real-world perspective for my students.I started teaching and tutoring simply because I truly find fulfillment in helping others to achieve their goals and learning. Computing is such an important field, and, in this industry, there is a real need for students to have as much understanding as possible not just about the programming tools, but also the techniques and skills needed for real-world software engineering. What my students most appreciate about me is that I bring real-world experience to the table. Along with being able to teach you how to accomplish a specific programming task in a given language, I can also help you understand how it fits in to the bigger picture, and the tradeoffs related to the different ways you could approach solving a given problem.I look forward to working with you and helping you along the path towards your goals, whatever they may be. Please reach out if you are looking for someone who will strive to bring valuable insight as a tutor.
