I'm a par time tutor and at safety engineer working at Intel. My areas of focus are science, math, writing, english, and Spanish. Learning has always been my number one passion in life, and I can't wait to share that passion with my clients. My goal as a tutor is to not only help my clients learn their subject matter, but also improve their confidence by reinforcing the value of improving on their academic weaknesses. In my opinion intellectual growth occurs when the student is challenged, not just when the student is learning something new. I prefer students in high school and college, as those are the ages I have the most experience with, but if you would like me to tutor your child I would be more than happy to help them grow. I believe that I offer a unique and effective tutoring experience, with very flexible hours and unrivaled dedication to my clients. Please contact me if you are interested, and I look forward to meeting you.

I have a PhD in Psychological and Brain Sciences from Johns Hopkins University and a BA in Psychology with a minor in History from Barnard College. I have experience teaching and tutoring undergraduate students and have volunteered as a high school math tutor. I have a strong interest in most academic subjects but I particularly enjoy tutoring math. I've made extensive use of statistics as part of my research on vision and attention so I'm in a good position to talk about how certain concepts are used in the real world. I'm also a huge bookworm and offer SAT Critical Reading prep as well as general tutoring for writing. My hobby is creative writing and I'm currently writing up parts of my dissertation for publication, so I can help with writing from literary analysis to history research papers to the writing aspect of lab reports. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm playing the hammered dulcimer and teaching myself to code in new languages. When a student is struggling I'm always on the lookout for issues that don't have to do with the specific subject matter, such as test anxiety, a lack of organization, of a belief that the subject matter will not be useful later in life. When it comes to the actual material, I believe that there is almost always more than one way to approach a problem and that students should figure out what works best for them. I've studied learning and memory extensively, so I'm always ready to offer up advice. Not everyone learns the same way, and that's fine! While it's ideal for students to gain a deep understanding of the material, when it comes to standardized and multiple choice tests, test-taking strategies make a huge difference. I've used these strategies very successfully in the past.

In 2012 I graduated from University of Oregon with a major in finance and a minor in economics. While in college I was a business tutor in the Integrated Communications Program in which I helped upper division business students with formal writing and public speaking. I also spent my sophomore year as the Vice President of Finance of my sorority. I am currently attending Concordia University to obtain my Masters of Arts in Teaching; when I graduate I will be licensed to teach middle and high school mathematics. As my background suggests, I love math! In high school I created my own tutoring business in which I tutored all levels of math ranging from elementary math, trigonometry, statistics, and algebra to test prep. When I was in college, I continued my passion and tutored freshman level mathematics and accounting. During my first year in Portland I was part of a tutoring company in which I tutored several students. Needless to say, math is my passion. As a student who has taken loads of math classes, I have watched my friends struggle through not only the subject but the teaching methods. My experiences as a tutor have allowed me to branch out and use a variety of teaching techniques in order to fit each student's needs. It enabled me to create fun ideas on how to teach math in hopes that my students will not only understand but like the subject.I am a firm believer at creating a trusting relationship with my students. I work with students to create a safe and trusting environments, ones in which students are not afraid to ask questions and raise challenges. I believe that building confidence and self esteem is large factor in the success rates of students. As a tutor, it is my belief that my job is not only to teach the subject matter but to create confident, successful students.Of course I like other activities besides studying math. I ran cross country for two years in high school and have played softball for 15 years. I love photography--landscapes are my specialty. Along with spending time with my family, friends, and dogs I love to scrapbook to capture all the memories.

Conversational Spanish Tutor • +13 Subjects

Hello! Hola!I look forward to helping you with your Spanish. I am currently in the Spanish M.A. program at Portland State University, and I also teach beginning Spanish students at the university level. I have lived abroad in Mexico and have had extensive professional and interpersonal contact with people from all over the Spanish speaking world. I am confident I can help you improve your level of Spanish whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced student. When I began learning Spanish about twelve years ago, it was a very challenging and frustrating experience. I felt like I was the slowest student in class, and even though I spent a lot of time studying, some things just did not make sense to me. I felt like I would never be able to become fluent and have a comprehensible conversation with a native speaker. Now, I have enjoyed being completely fluent in Spanish for several years, and I have even had a few native speakers confuse me for a fellow native Spanish speaker.I have recently began a career as a Spanish instructor for first and second year university students, and I have been tutoring Spanish students off and on for the last seven years. While I love teaching in the classroom, I also love the one-on-one experience of being able to personalize the content to an individual's needs and move at the student's own pace. This is ideal and very important when learning!I look forward to connecting with you and helping!

I graduated from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas with a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering. I earned my Bachelor of Science at Colorado State University in Chemical Engineering with minors in Mathematics and History. Im passionate about learning and while I enjoyed working on my research, part of my responsibilities included teaching students. One of my favorite classes to teach was an Introduction to Mechanical Engineering where we used Lego Mindstorms to build robots. I tutor a wide range of subjects in math and science. What I love about math is that once youre able to gain a basic understanding of the principles, you can learn to apply them to more complex problems. Theres no better feeling than the absolute certainty of understanding a problem all the way through, and I enjoy helping students come to that same realization. I like to have a whiteboard or lots of paper to work out problems because in my mind, its important to play around with the problem in order to best understand it. In my spare time, I love reading science fiction and fantasy novels, writing fiction and playing volleyball.
