I graduated in June 2014 with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Microbiology, and I took my MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test) in September 2014. After completing my MCAT I decided that I wanted to take off a couple of years to gain non-academic experience and make sure that medical school is what I want. When I am not tutoring students I participate in a couple of non-profit programs where I tutor homeless kids and under-served families for free. In addition I also work as a research associate in cancer immunology at City of Hope Medical Center. When I am not working I enjoy listening to music, playing musical instruments (I play several), and reading. I look forward to working with you to help you succeed in whatever goals you hope to achieve.

AP English Language and Composition Tutor • +15 Subjects

Many mistake English as a formally Anglo-American tradition with no accommodation or room for diversity, especially in regards to its students who come from a spectrum of socially and economically varied demographic backgrounds, with English often as a second language.Nothing could be further from the truth! As a global language, English consistently transforms day to day through the diversity of mouths that speak and write it to communicate to one another across millions of miles and megabytes at every minute. That said, this heightens the urgency for students to be able to comfortably and efficiently operate through the mechanics of English as successful contenders in academics and the work force. My commitment to literacy, literature, reading comprehension, rhetoric, and composition comes from the belief that power is embedded in how others represent us and how we represent ourselves. The ability to read between the lines and express ourselves the way we want to be understood in the world is the surest guarantee to both personal and professional success, whether it be in formal academic writing and journalism or through the scores in standardized test-taking, college entrance essays or personal statementsthese often being the only opportunities to demonstrate who we are.Trust is the basis of my tutoring and teaching philosophy. Every student deserves to know that their tutor is out for their best interests, part of which includes the understanding that not every student learns the same way. I like to draw out the student's own natural ability and personal strengths for an easy-going and positive experience without ever worrying about being condescended or a lack of chemistry! As a grad student in American-English Literature and English content editor, I've worked with a variety of professionals and writers, but it's been more enjoyable and fulfilling when working for literacy advancement and phonics with elementary- and middle-schoolers, whose natural cleverness and ability to learn quickly will always surprise you! I also have the most fun working on grammar, writing, and reading comprehension with high school studentsbut the most fun with high-schoolers has been in writing school essays, personal statements, and college entrance essays, which are more often than not a creative and fun experience hidden beneath the stress of the writing process!

ACT Math Tutor • +19 Subjects

I graduated from the University of Southern California in 2013 with a degree in Biological Sciences. Now I am in my second year of medical school, once again at USC, with the hopes of either being a cardiologist or dermatologist -- still have plenty of time to decide! During college I tutored two kids in 6th through 8th grade math. I really enjoyed helping them with their homework assignments, preparing them for exams, and watching them improve in their courses. During this time, I learned how to be a very patient instructor and an effective communicator. As my dad was a high school math teacher, I also learned a few things from him about how to teach difficult subjects to students. Since I am in medical school, I obviously love science involving anything that has to do with the body, so I would be very excited to assist with biology or other topics in that area. In addition to general coursework, I'm more than happy to help with exam prep for the math, science, and writing sections of the SAT/ACT (no critical reading/reasoning...not a huge fan of that stuff!). Outside of school, I really enjoy traveling to other countries during breaks or whenever I get the chance. I love experiencing new cultures and diverse foods, and seeing sites that you can't see anywhere else.

I recently graduated from the University of Southern California with degrees in Global Health and Environmental Studies, and I will be be attending Stanford University for law school in the fall. My interest is in increasing access to health services in developing countries through a human rights approach. I love traveling, and I have spent time studying in Spain, volunteering at a health clinic in Peru, doing field work in Belize, and working at the World Health Organization in Switzerland. I have experience tutoring elementary math and English, teaching science labs to fifth grade classes, and leading health labs for high school students. I also have worked helped students prep for the Law School Admissions Test. I am able to tutor a wide variety of subjects, as I have an interdisciplinary background. However, I like to focus on standardized testing (LSAT and SAT), college essays and general essay skills, and math. In my free time, I spend time hiking, trying new restaurants, and keeping active!

I have been tutoring for the last five years, and I am grateful that so many students have trusted me to help them achieve their goals. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Oberlin College. I am currently studying at San Francisco State University, pursuing my Master's of Science in Physics. Between my undergraduate and graduate studies, I served in the United States Peace Corps to teach English in rural Panama. In San Francisco, I have been enjoying helping my students improve their test scores on the SAT. I have a strong connection to all the subjects I tutor. Because I am studying science, I am most passionate about physics and math, but I excel in every subject I teach. Throughout my life, I have had many wonderful opportunities that resulted from my excellent education. It is important to me that my students receive an excellent education to improve their quality of life. In my free time, I enjoy playing guitar and bass, writing fiction, and improving my chess game.

AP French Tutor • +16 Subjects

I have a Bachelor's in French and Theatre and a Master's degree in French, both from Illinois State university. I held a teaching assistantship during my Master's studies for which I taught a French class at the university. During the summers I worked in the French language-immersion camp. While in college I did a study abroad program in France and after finishing my Master's I lived and worked in France for a year teaching English in schools. The majority of my experience has been teaching languages, and although I can teach other subjects, languages and culture are what I truly have a passion for.Through my various experiences, I have taught languages to students ages 4-18 and above, have taught in a classic classroom environment with all the latest technological aides, and taught outdoors through activities, games, and music.I believe that each student is unique and has their own learning style, which is why it can be tough for many students to thrive solely through learning in a typical classroom environment. Tutoring offers a more focused, individualized atmosphere which enables the tutor to tailor the lessons to the student for them to have an optimal learning experience. I have found that the best results happen when language, or any subject for that matter, is taught through a variety of different activities that are interactive and engaging.Outside of teaching and learning languages, my interests and hobbies include theatre, music/singing, reading, watching TV and movies, travel, fashion, and spending time with my friends and family. I also enjoy challenges and new experiences.

My objective as a tutor is to deliver maximum life-long values: conceptual understanding, a rekindled love for learning, confidence, genuine self-esteem, and friendship. I deliver these by focusing on conceptual understanding. Most difficulties with the current materials come from not having mastered the earlier concepts or skills. I locate these earlier misunderstandings by asking questions like, "Walk me through this problem and explain your thought process" or "How are you thinking about this problem?" It's normal to get confused responses to these questions, but whatever response is offered, I can dig deeper by asking additional questions. Upon finding underlying areas that are not understood, I deliver focused learning experiences designed to quickly, easily, and enjoyably bring about conceptual understanding. I can off these kinds of mini-lessons immediately and without additional preparation because I myself have conceptual mastery of nearly the entire math and physics curricula from elementary through the first 4 years of college. When I am not tutoring: I am seeking employment in the medical device and aerospace industries as a Quality Engineer or Reliability Engineer, creating heart and mind expanding experiences for my wife and daughters, supporting my daughter's acting career and rigorous talent development programs, reading for learning or pleasure, authoring heart and mind expanding books, engaging in aggressive personal development, exploring the fullness of what life has to offer, laughing, learning, and creating values for the world.
