I am a second year doctoral student in clinical psychology at the University of Arizona. I received my B.S. degree in psychology with a minor in biology, with a focus on neuroscience and biomedical science from Northern Arizona University. As long as I can remember, I have had a love for teaching. In elementary school I would come home in the afternoon and 'play school' with my stuffed animals, creating and grading worksheets for them. Throughout school, I continued to take every opportunity to assist friends and classmates. Now, in graduate school, I have had the opportunity for training in teaching strategies and philosophy, as well as hands-on work assistant teaching undergraduate psychology courses.I find that I am best at teaching test taking strategies, particularly for the SAT and GRE, and I excel at English focused tasks.Apart from teaching, I have 3 dogs and 4 cats, a flourishing desert garden, and am mastering Shaolin Kung Fu alongside my wonderful fiance.

I am a PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering and have a Masters in Optical Engineering. I studied Mathematics and Biochemistry for my undergraduate degree. I am really passionate about math and tutored at an on campus facility for 3 years! I have been professionally trained and certified as a tutor. During my time as a tutor on campus, I helped students in subjects ranging from incoming freshman pre-algebra to help students prepare for college math to students in Calc 2. Since starting with Varsity in 2018, I have tutored students in high school from introductory algebra to pre-calculus and SAT prep. The biggest thing I've learned as a tutor is that everyone has a unique learning style and I was trained to be able to adapt to these different styles. Outside of school work, I love to go hiking with my husband and I am always in search of good food!! I have two adorable cats and a very cute dog. I have a love for all animals because I grew up on a hobby farm.I hope to help you soon!

I am a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of Arizona. I have my BA in European History from UCSC and my MA in Modern European History from U of A, and am currently pursuing my PhD in Modern European History at the University of Arizona. After completing my BA, I joined Teach For America and taught 7th grade Social Studies for two years, earning my Initial Educator's Certificate in the process. Teach For America, professional development through my school, and the Columbia Teachers College Reading & Writing Project all gave me valuable skills for teaching students of all different abilities and readiness to learn. These organizations also taught me how to motivate students and keep them invested in learning. After deciding to return to school, I began working as an instructor at Sylvan Learning Center, which gave me experience teaching students of all ages in a wide range of subjects. In addition to working at Sylvan, I also have experience as a TA and course leader for students at the University of Arizona taking classes in history. I have taught and tutored K-8 math, reading at all levels (from phonics development to critical anaylsis of texts), study skills, SAT preparation, social studies, and history at the high school and undergraduate level. While each subject is rewarding in its own way, as you may have guessed from this statement, I love history. Getting students to realize the joys of history and to see it as the fantastic unfolding of human events that it is represents one of my favorite experiences as a teacher. As a teacher, I've learned that every student can learn given the right circumstances. As a tutor and teacher, it's my job to work with the student to figure out how they learn so that I know how to teach them. Education is never a one-size-fits-all endeavor! When I'm not teaching or working towards my degree, I enjoy spending time with my family, from talking about silly TV shows with my sister to playing video games with my nephews. Whether it's the latest pop-country single or a Tom Waits deep-cut, I also love talking about, listening to, and playing music.

I am a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics. Currently I am pursuing my Master of Education degree through the University of Arizona. Prior to starting this program I lived and worked in Ecuador teaching English as a Foreign Language with the United States Peace Corps. I have also lived and taught English in Spain and Honduras. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Spanish, Language Arts, and Social Studies. I believe in the importance of lifelong learning, and as a tutor, I strive to instill in my students that passion for knowledge. When given the vision and tools to succeed all students are capable of achieving their education goals. In my free time I enjoy hiking, camping, yoga, and working in my garden.

I am a Secondary Education teacher specializing in English Language Arts. I earned my Masters of Arts of Teaching from The Citadel and Bachelors of English Literature from Clemson University. I graduated with honors from both institutions and was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, an honors society for Education majors.I have continued to learn by taking courses in Pima Community College's Post-Baccalaureate program. I have stayed up-to-date with online learning techniques by taking professional development courses with ASU's Arizona Virtual Teacher Institute.I enjoy teaching and tutoring English Language Arts at the high school, college, and adult level. ELA covers a wide umbrella: I teach grammar, writing skills, composition, reading comprehension strategies, rhetoric, literature, and public speaking skills. I teach grammar with a practical approach, centering it around writing and grounding new lessons in students' prior knowledge. I have experience teaching High School English at the honors and remedial level. I had students with IEPs or 504 plans in my classes at every academic level. I pride myself in breaking down difficult texts (including Shakespeare and Beowulf) so that students find them approachable.I enjoy being able to work one-on-one with students who benefit from specific strategies and extra instructional time, particularly due to dyslexia and/or ADHD. In my experience, encouragement can make a world of difference when students struggle with a subject, no matter what the reason. Often students who struggle with a learning disability want to do well, and are motivated to do the work when someone listens to them and offers concrete strategies that may help. It can be frustrating and discouraging when students keep trying harder on their own without seeing a result! My job is to make tailored suggestions so they can try things differently instead of just trying harder to no avail.I help students prepare for the AP English Language and Composition Exam. I teach SAT Reading Prep classes. I help students with summer reading assignments and college essays. In the summers, I also teach Introduction to Japanese and Conversational French, one-on-one or in small groups.I teach and tutor High School English, Composition, American Literature, British Literature, World Literature, and Japanese Literature. I am a former National Merit Scholar, and I help students prepare for the English, Reading, and Writing sections of the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. I am a two-time recipient of the Educational Testing Service's Recognition of Excellence for the PRAXIS Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12 and PRAXIS English Language, Literature, and Composition: Content Knowledge.

I grew up in Salinas, CA and attended local public schools until high school, when I went to a small college-prep school. I started my college career studying Computer Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, but ended up finishing my bachelor's degree in Philosophy at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where I live now. For a few years, lived in Boulder, Colorado, where I did an MA in Philosophy at the University of Colorado. What I loved most about graduate school was being a Teaching Assistant for Introductory Philosophy courses. I enjoyed communicating the importance of critical thinking and clear argumentative writing. I also had a chance to display my passion for charting the development and influence of big ideas through History. After returning to Tucson, I completed a teaching credential in secondary (7th-12th) education from Pima Community College. With my MA, I am most qualified to teach Philosophy; however, I am "highly qualified" according to the State of Arizona to teach a wide range of subjects, including English, Social Studies, History, Middle School General Sciences, Geography, and Political Science/American Government. I taught English, Health, Ancient Civilizations, Geography, and World History as a high school classroom teacher for a couple years, but I enjoy one-on-one tutoring much more. I have been tutoring independently and through VarsityTutors for about four years now and have ample experience with all aspects of the SAT and ACT. Outside of work and school, I enjoy playing board games and video games. It's my favorite way to spend time with my wife and close friends. I am also a soccer fan, especially of the US Men's National Team.

I studied at the University of Maryland and graduated at the University of Arizona. My primary interests in college were chemistry, biology (especially plant biology) and physical science. My desire is to help all students, no matter what their age or ability, to be successful in learning a subject, whether it's math or science or reading. I recognize that different learners learn differently, and I use different strategies to engage their ability to learn and succeed. There is nothing like the joy of seeing the "lightbulb" go off when a student masters a concept.

"I am so adjective, I verb nouns."I believe relationships are more important than test scores, and people more important that numbers, budgets, or grades. But if we have to play along with this this game, we may as well play with skill.
