I graduated from Truman State University with a BA in Mathematics and a MA in Education. I taught 8th grade math for three years. I tutored students ranging from kindergarten to adult in math, reading, study skills, and test prep at a National learning center for seven years. I have been tutoring independently for three years. My current subjects include elementary and middle school math, pre-Algebra, Algebra Algebra 2, Geometry, study skills and ACT test prep. I want students to succeed and understand math. I relate new topics to what a student understands and build off of that. I am patient and I can usually find another way to explain something if a student is struggling with a concept. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our six children.

I have a PhD in Russian from Columbia University, and 31 years of university-level teaching experience. Now that I'm a Professor Emeritus, I've became an art educator and language tutor. I've tutored people who were native speakers of French, Spanish, German, and Hungarian, among European languages; and of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, among Asian languages. And, actually, tutoring for SAT Prep and helping people improve their grades in high school English is not so different from that. When I do that kind of tutoring, I emphasize features of the very complicated English verb system such as colloquial phrasal verbs and their more formal equivalents ("to go back"/"to return").Of course, every student is different, and each teaching situation is different, so I bring to each session a prepared lesson that both reviews the previous lesson and works on new problems and ideas.

When I was in middle school I needed multiple tutors for different subjects. And to be honest I was embarrassed about it. But I began to gain more confidence about it through the encouragement of my tutor. She was able to keep me motivated and gave me the confidence I needed to succeed. So when got into High School I decided to start tutoring and mentoring myself to give back to my community like so many people had did for me.So now I tutor to help enrich my community and to help students gain the confidence and motivation they need to succeed in life.

I graduated from SUNY Maritime College in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in business, and I am now studying physics at Stony Brook University. My personal philosophy is that anything is possible when someone has a goal he or she set for herself or himself and he or she willing to put in the effort to attain that goal, even if the steps in between are difficult or not very interesting to them. That goal can be as simple as passing a single test or as big as knowing exactly what they want to do one day and working as hard as they can to achieve it. My favorite subject is Physics because I love seeing how the universe works; I also enjoy math because it's a huge part of Physics! My method is to first make sure the student knows exactly what the question is asking them to find, then break the question down into as many simple steps as needed to show the student how to progress to the right answer. Rather than perform each step for them, I prefer to guide the student from one step to the next ensuring they understand why each step is necessary before moving on to the next. Besides that, practice makes perfect!

Hi! I'm Steve, and hopefully I can be the person who helps get you up to speed with Spanish! I went to school at UW - Eau Claire and I have my Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish for Business. While I studied at UWEC, I also studied abroad for about 5 months in Valladolid, Spain, where I was really able to enhance my Spanish skills, and gain fluency in the language. Travel and culture are some of my passions, and living in Europe helped bring those passions to life. It is so fulfilling to be able to travel and know the native language, and that is the type of passion that I hope to inspire in my students. While in Spain, I taught English to a number of students, and through this and my own personal experiences learning Spanish (and American Sign Language!), I feel I know the best ways to get in touch with my students. Some of my hobbies include running, coffee, learning Italian and, you guessed it, TRAVEL! ¡Nos vemos pronto!
